Family-friendly, bright and cozy traditional Japanese house up to 5 people

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Located on a quiet lane leading up to the Chawan-zaka approach to Kiyomizu Temple (an UNESCO World Heritage site), just minutes from the hustle and bustle of the busy souvenir shops and restaurants lining Ninnen-zaka and Sannen-zaka below the temple’s main gates, this modern machiya-style house was completely reformed and refurbished in 2007.

The interior offers a harmonious combination of Japanese design and beautiful antiques with modern features such as hardwood floors and Iranian gabeh carpets. Downstairs, there is a full kitchen and a dining area with a traditional Japanese "mizuya" cupboard. The dining area opens out on to a deck with a small Japanese garden beneath which flows a small stream from the temple. You can hear the stream, birds and the temple bells ringing.

There is a western-style toilet and a full Japanese-style bath downstairs. The two bedrooms are upstairs and get plenty of light. The large, high ceiling-ed Japanese-style tatami mat bedroom sleeps up to 3 people in single or double futons. Across the hall, the Western bedroom has a queen-sized futon bed.

The neighborhood in the Higashiyama district in which the house is located has been catering to tourists and pilgrims for centuries. Kiyomizu Temple is an especially popular destination for viewing the cherry blossoms and the autumn colors. Visit the numerous shops selling traditional Kiyomizu-yaki pottery as you wander the steep and ancient back lanes paved with stone north to Yasaka Shrine (10 minutes), or Hanamikoji Street (15 minutes), the center of the Gion, where the geisha ply their trade. From Kyoto Station, it’s 15 minutes by bus to the Gojo-zaka bus stop, a short walk from the house. Our modern machiya-style house in Gion-Kiyomizu is perfectly located for enjoying the best the ancient city of Kyoto has to offer.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Our visit to Kyoto was very successful in every sense, we enjoyed it so much. Much of it was due to your nice house in which we lived for two weeks and felt there like home. We loved the neighborhood and on our last Friday in Kyoto had a long walk through the little alleys of the area. We just loved it and decided that this was the most beautiful area in Kyoto...."

Absolutely amazing! Fantasic location and quaint neighborhood!

  • 5 of 5

Acco is a terrific hostess! She had lots of books on Kyoto and a map and sat down with us to highlight where all the great places were in relation to the home. The home is very comfortable and clean. It’s located on a quiet street but only minutes from everything at your fingertips. You couldn’t get a more convenient location. So much to do in the area and using the buses and subway is super easy if you use an app (we used Apple maps and had a Pasmo reloadable card). We were traveling a lot so we really appreciated having the washing machine and hanging our clothes on the back patio. Our girls loved the comfort of the tatami room and my husband and I enjoyed the Western room. The stairs up to the bedrooms are very steep so hold onto the railing and take your time climbing them and you won’t have any problems. The bath/shower water gets very hot and there are very nice heaters if it’s cold, like when we were there. If you’re a Starbucks addict, ask Acco to tell you how to get to the very unique and cool one in the nearby walk ways. Great craft beer and sake tasting stand located on next street over. Go into Kyoto and eat at Ramen Sen No Kaze Kyoto for amazing ramen. Try Mochi in all different flavors, our favorites were chocolate and Asuki red bean. If you need a break from the temples and shrines, Movix in town offers movies in English and it’s a great experience, try the sweet popcorn. Acco, thanks for an amazing Japanese home to relax at during our very busy and wonderful time in Kyoto.

Home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

This place is truly delightful and it was perfect for a three night visit to Kyoto. It was great to have some extra space to spread out and the house is very sweet with all we needed. It's close enough to walk to many tourist spots, including Gion. Anywhere else, and it's easy to catch the bus around the corner. Taxi to station is about 800 yen, if you have bags. The convenience store to send on our luggage is only a few hundred meters away. Acco, the host, is very helpful. She met us at the taxi rank when we arrived and showed us all the features of her home. She also went to the store and filled the luggage form in for us to use when we left! A beautiful host!

Perfect In Every Way

  • 5 of 5

Loved this cozy machiya located on a quiet lane near Kiyomizu-dera. Enjoyed coming home after a long day of sightseeing to relax and rejuvenate. We liked having the kitchen and being able to have some of our meals at home. Would definitely stay here again. Thank you Acco for allowing us to stay in your beautiful house.

Perfect location in Kyoto

  • 5 of 5

Adjacent to the iconic Kiyomizu Temple, this delightful two bedroom house with fully equipped kitchen and gas fired "onsen" is in a quiet backstreet and exudes peace and tranquillity but only minutes from every service needed. 10-15 minute bus ride to Kyoto's famous Railway Station and its immense architecture, 2 bus stops from Gion, and two more bus stops to the downtown Kawaramachi District...all of Kyoto is accessable. We loved it.

A touch of old Japan

  • 5 of 5

Kiyomizu house offers a glimpse of a former Japan in a delightful modern setting. Located adjacent to the Temple and a park at the rear the house provides easy access to the tourist attractions, but also an escape. Acco ways particularly helpful in terms of my arrival and offered ongoing support. I recommend this property to Kyoto loving visitors.
