About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

'The house was nice and clean. Lots of extras which we appreciated borrowing: ice chest, flashlights, umbrellas, re-usable tote bags. Loved the extra warm and cozy blankets'.

This house (Built in 2003) is located in one of the last high-altitude rain forests in the U.S. centrally located, near the village of Volcano (altitude approx. 3600 ft) four miles from the entrance of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the heart of the Big Island of Hawaii. Only 30 minutes from Hilo and 2 hours from Kona .

The house is decorated with island art and comfortable seating areas. Your every need will be met. Enjoy creating your meals in our well equipped, well lit kitchen or dine out at one of the many restaurants in Volcano Village or inside the Volcanoes National Park. From fine dining to casual there's something for everyone's taste and budget. Enjoy a glass of wine in the evening while gazing at the immense star filled sky or the romantic outside lighted ferns from the floor to ceiling windows in the living room. Cuddle up in comfort in the living room & watch a movie using the Roku Streaming Player or listen to your own iPod or iPhone connected to the stereo system. Then enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep in our luxurious beds. This is where you will find a truly peaceful, relaxing getaway.

In the morning have your coffee on the lanai (deck) while watching local birds feasting at the birdfeeder and playing in the surrounding fern forest while you consider your days adventure from the numerous list of options provided in our 10 page introduction email.

This house consists of a downstairs bedroom with queen size bed, spacious living room with cathedral ceiling and full sized convertible sofa, complete kitchen and a tiled bathroom with a luxurious spa-size tub with private views into the forest.

This property is very private. You can not see any neighbors due to the very dense tropical rain forest.

There is a roomy upstairs bedroom with a Queen sized iComfort Sleep System by Serta bed and a futon including 4 inches of full size memory foam to use any where you wish. The upstairs bedroom is accessed from the living room by way of a securely fastened ships ladder.

We are located only four miles from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park This is where you can view the steam vents and explore lava tubes. Some are located closer to Hilo which are all part of the same series of tubes carved out 500-700 years ago. I can provide you with information on visiting the best lava tubes on the island. For more volcano information click on the link to our web site below.

In Volcano Village about three minutes away you can be enjoying one of our many charming restaurants, shops or art galleries. Volcanoes National Park and surrounding areas have many beautiful hikes to choose from. Don’t forget to visit the Volcano Winery and take in a round of golf at the Volcano Golf & Country Club.

The Old Town of Hilo with its Historic Tsunami Museum and bay front shopping, glorious parks and waterfalls and snorkeling beaches are a short thirty minute drive North of Volcano. Thirty minutes in the opposite direction heading South of Volcano is one of the Big Island of Hawaii's best beaches, Punalu'u Black sand beach. It is known for its green sea turtles and beautiful black sand.

There is no where else you will find a community as charming and creative as Volcano Village. Hanging around the quaint Volcano Village restaurants and chatting with the locals is a great way to see and feel the Island aloha spirit. There is a mix of artists, musicians, writers and more. Be sure to make it to the local farmers market held every Sunday morning.

If you love orchids there is an orchid growing warehouse just down the highway called Akatsuka Orchid Gardens. They have some of the world’s rarest and most unusual orchids. A feast of color for the eyes. You may see them blooming in our gardens depending on the time of year.

At Richardson Bay 30 minutes from the house in Hilo There are beaches with great snorkeling. This area is great for bringing the kids. There are a lot more things to do and see, there are water falls, botanical gardens, lava flows into the ocean (when active) and great restaurants.

I can provide you with more info on all that and much more when you book your stay with us. As an added bonus there are no mosquitoes in this area because of it's cooler climate.

Your host is located near-by. Should you have any special needs or requests, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.

About Tracy Taylor

I've been a business owner for an ever growing Residential and Commercial cleaning company for the last 15 years. I have cleaned other owners vacation rentals during that time and decided that was where I needed to invest my savings. I'm adventurous and I love life!

Tracy Taylor purchased this house in 2008

Why Tracy Taylor chose Ohia Estates

I love this area of the Big Island. The temperature is perfect most of the time. The idea that the land around here is new and more land is being created all the time is fascinating to me. I could watch the lava flow for hours. I also can't get enough of snorkeling on the islands. The sea life here is absolutely amazing. I'm not sure which I love more.

Come and experience it for yourself. I will be happy to share the wonders of the Big Island with you so that you will go home knowing you have had the best vacation of your life.

What makes this house unique

I think the best thing I like about the house is the peace and quiet. The variety of birds and their songs are so beautiful. Listen for them at the end of the video. Mornings are the best sitting on the lanai drinking tea. The variety of plants and flowers will amaze you as they do me as I learn what will grow in this area! Something is always blooming. And the stargazing OMG the stargazing!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Mahalo nui for sharing such a magnificent and inviting piece of your paradise with us! We found ourselves immediately comfortable and relaxed by all the amenities and the wonderful set up provided for us. We were able to completely soak in the entrancing beauty of the scenery so perfectly framed in the picture like windows throughout the house. Our stay here has been that of a fantasyland like vacation with explorations not only of our inner peace, but of the breathtaking views and the waters of South Point, the green sands, the fabulous tide pools of Kapoho. (Thanks for the map!) And the mesmerizing encounter between Pele and her water loving sister watching from Kalapana. Needless to say, our stay here has been perfect and we send a big mahalo to you both!

Rare gem in a wonderful location!!

  • 5 of 5

As first time visitors in Hawaii we were blown away at how beautiful and well appointed this house was. Nestled in the middle of lush tropical settings, it was both private and peaceful. Nature abounds and the large patio is a great place to relax listening to the birds singing.

We've stayed in many VRBO homes and this was hands down the most well appointed we've ever found. You won't require a thing except sugar and cream for your morning coffee! At this time of year you'll definitely need warmer clothes as this area of the island is cool, however there are a ton of blankets and heaters provided to help.

The house was spotless and the beds were very comfortable.

This house is very close to Volcano National park so make sure to check that out while you're visiting - a binder in the house provides a ton of info for visitors. A great place to find huge sandwiches and breakfast bowls at an affordable price is the Eagle Lighthouse cafe in the town of Volcano. The food was delicious and handy before a day hike.

Overall we loved this place and would definitely stay again. Our only complaint was that the washing machine was broken when we came and we weren't advised ahead of time. It's a pain to find out at the last second that we needed to go to a laundromat to wash our clothes (with the high humidity clothes tend to get damp quickly).

I would recommend this property for your stay, just make sure to check on the status of the washing machine prior to booking if that's a concern.

Gorgeous Jungle Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this property for 3 nights during our honeymoon so we could be near by the Volcano National Park. This house was perfect. The large floor to ceiling windows are really picturesque. One early morning while enjoying coffee there was a large bird, maybe a hawk, sitting on a branch right outside the window. It was so cool.

The house is well equipped, feels like your home away from home. Very private. I have to admit it was a bit tricky to find, its on a long tree lined street where you cannot really see any of the houses. They are all set back. This house is no different its down a little driveway and the address was different then what was posted out front. But we found it... and were happy with where we were.

The property is less then a 10min drive to the Volcano Park, and also very close to the town of Volcano. The town of Volcano is tiny. But we had dinner one night in town at the lodge and it was really great after a long hike over the lava fields.

Other fun to dos near by. The black sand beach is so pretty, we saw so many turtles. Also the little town of Pahao was a nice destination for lunch, we then went to Ahalanui Park for a swim.

A Jungle Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

My family and I enjoyed staying in the jungle here for a little over a week. Very private and quiet, Tracy and Annie were very quick to respond to questions. The kitchen was well stocked, and the bedroom was nicely furnished. Our son enjoyed the loft. We enjoyed the board games that were available and there were tons of books to read, too.

My favorite spot was on the porch. There's a neat bird feeder that you can fill up, then in about 5 minutes all sorts of birds show up. The volcano park is minutes away, there are restaurants and small stores nearby. The bath tub... super cool, and enough hot water to fill it up.

It's the jungle, so there's a lot of moisture.

I think it rained an inch or so in one afternoon... so expect some weather!

Its about 35 minutes or so to Hilo - super family friendly beach there, super neat farmers market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Overall, this was well worth the money we spent. Thanks so much for letting us stay in your home!

  • 5 of 5

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Rainforest Retreat. The setting in the jungle like surroundings was beautiful and secluded. The house was comfortable and well equipped with everything we needed. It was so conveniently located for Volcanoes National Park and Volcano Village, yet a wonderful private escape!

Accommodates 5 adults nicely

  • 5 of 5

We spent half of our stay on the big island here and the other half on the beach in Waikoloa. This was a great quiet retreat for our family of 5, including 3 adult children. The 3 spread out up in the loft and used the bed and futons provided. This was a great location to access all of the park trails. The kitchen was big enough for us to prepare breakfast and pack lunch and then hit the trails for the day. The laundry was a big help since we all were limited to one bag each and had been on the road for 10 days. A few recommendations: Thai Thai restaraunt in volcano was great! We left Volcano on 1/2/2018 and the lava flow is not flowing to the water line, but we were still able to hike to it and view it from Kalapana. This was one of the highlights of the trip. Drive to kalapana, rent a bike from Jeff (, pack some food and water, wear appropriate clothing -do not wear sandals - you want to start out around 3 or 4pm, hike in to the flow sit, chill, eat and wait for sunset. Spectacular!

Great house while visiting Volcano National Park

  • 5 of 5

Tracy has one of the most well-equipped houses we've ever stayed in. She has everything you could possibly need, and we appreciated all of the kitchen equipment and extra blankets and pillows. The decor is very nice and we loved the shower with the rainforest-view windows and plant vines. The loft is a fun place for older kids to sleep. I wouldn't put younger children there without an adult because of the steep ladder. It's a great place to stay while you spend a day or two exploring Volcano Park. We hiked the Kilauaea Iki trail (highly recommended), and also went to view the smoldering caldera from the Jaggar Museum after dark (also highly recommended). We also recommend driving the Chain of Craters Road to the end. The village with a few restaurants and shops is several miles away, but we drove to a nice Thai restaurant there. This is a home for cooking, sleeping, conversation, playing games, and looking at the beautiful flowers and plants in the garden! Mahalo, Tracy. We loved your house!.
