Panoramic view, large deck, ground floor apartment, walk to subway and beach
This ground-floor apartment with private entrance has lovely hill-side, ocean and tree-line views. High on the peaceful and historic Jones Hill, less than a half mile from Savin Hill Station on the Red Line Subway, it combines the transportation convenience of the city with the giant leafy trees, rolling yards, horizon harbor view, and charming architecture of this old established residential area. Wood floors, white walls, large decks, long views--a relaxing place to stay, fully furnished and fully equipped. Just open your suitcase and you are home!
You have your own private outdoor entrance, accessed via the driveway, which slopes down to the back deck, and via four steps. There is a small, private glassed-in porch as well as a spacious open air deck, from which to enjoy the summer flowers in the back garden and the hillside view. You can walk over to the local tennis courts and beach, or explore the near-by bike paths that go from Castle Island to Savin Hill to Neponset and beyond.
The ample private deck area allows you to safely re-connect with family and friends outdoors, and the apartment itself has great cross-ventilation. The apartment receives both morning and afternoon sun, in fact watching the sun come up over the harbor from the porch or dining area is a special reward for early risers. This is a great space for some one who works from home because there is a dedicated work alcove with desk, and three other places you could set up for a little variety. But it is also excellent for a medical person, as we are only a ten minute bus ride from the BU Medical Center, and twelve minutes by subway to Mass General. If you are on a surgical rotation and only want to rent for a few months, let us know, that could be arranged. However, this is not a good setting for a person with mobility issues because of the hill, the steps, etc.
From the spacious back porch and living room area, you have a panoramic view of a long hillside stretching all the way down to Boston Harbor in the distance, with 100-year-old trees, charming gardens, and varied historic architecture to liven it up (including a friendly family of three wild turkeys that occasionally roost up in the trees!).
The apartment has a galley kitchen with full size appliances attached to a pleasant glassed-in conservatory overlooking the garden, just right for a cup of coffee in the morning. A living/dining room with cherry-wood table and comfortable convertible sofa, a separate bedroom with a queen-size bed and large closet, and a bathroom including a shower, complete the apartment. All is furnished and the kitchen is equipped with the basics, so just bring a suitcase! The interior is 516 square feet approx, the exterior decks add an addition 235 square feet.
There is a full-service market near the subway with an excellent selection of fresh vegetables, meat and fish, pasta and desserts. There are also plenty of restaurants for good take-out food, and a pharmacy, all within easy walking distance.
This is a quiet neighborhood with a lot of professionals and medical workers, in particular because we have good transportation connections to BU Medical Center and several community health centers. We are also a fast ride on the reliable Red Line to MGH and Cambridge. Savin Hill Station on the reliable Red Line is less than half a mile away (10-12 minutes walk) so you won't need a car; but if you have one, on-street parking is plentiful, especially on our nearest cross-street, and no permit needed.
I am a health psychologist and music therapist, and speak Italian and French because of having grown up in Italy. I live a only few floors up, so feel free to call, write or text with your requests--we want you to be comfortable!
Your rental fee includes basic cable/wifi, heat and hot water and electricity; heat is baseboard gas heat, so the apartment temperature is very comfortable year round. The apartment is most comfortable for two persons, but it can sleep four for shorter visits. We regret that we cannot permit any animals of any kind, even small ones or exceptionally well-trained ones, nor is any smoking allowed inside or behind the building nor on the porches and decks, due to my family's health conditions. There is a pleasant smoking area with chairs and table in the front yard.

Clean apartment with a nice kitchen that has everything you need. It was closed to shops to pick up food. The Subway and car rental were just down the street making getting around very easy. We had a great stay
This is a charming little place, and a really nice location. The train into the city proper is an easy walk down, a bit of a hilly hike on the way back after a long day of walking, but not too long, and it's such a nice neighborhood. The mass transit in that city is fantastic, and the Red Line connects to everything. The kitchen is small but adequate in terms of space and equipment for cooking simple meals. There are a number of local eateries very close, and a few markets that serve for very basic groceries. The couch was comfy, probably too small for 3, but for my son and I it was fine, and there's a comfy chair at the desk in the bedroom. I was pleasantly surprised at the comfort of the pullout bed in the couch (with a 6' plus son, I got the couch lol). It was clean, and the outdoor spaces were amazing, although it was too cold when we were there to enjoy them. Parking on street was easy, and we got lucky our last day with a spot right outside the house. You may have to park a little bit away, but host instructions/suggestions here were very helpful. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here, and I would definitely stay here again.
We stayed here while attending the World Figure Skating Championships in Boston. We enjoyed the walk to the red line and back each day—very easy access into town.
The listing accurately described this property. I found this location to be very clean and quiet. The space was easy to enjoy and comfortable to relax in. The host was stellar with communication and information. I always felt very well taken care of. I highly recommend this listing.
Great restaurants nearby. Peaceful neighborhood that felt very safe. Lots of parking spaces so easy to park my car. The VRBO was clean but a bit on the dated side. Cute deck in the back for sitting. Check in was a breeze.A couple of suggestions: A smart TV, more than one coffee mug, soap, shampoo and conditioner for the shower. All in all it was a great experience. Thanks to the host!
Lovely space, perfect for two people. Clean and charming. Within easy walking distance to restaurants, coffee shops and the T. Safe and quiet area. Host was incredibly helpful and very responsive.
Very cute space. We love the history and the well developed neighborhood. Taking the subway was nice although there was a steep climb back to the house after a long day of walking. The bed was very comfortable. The kitchen included the essentials. The restroom was small but sufficient
Cozy, convenient, very nice owner, easy to get around. Not a luxury place but has all essentials and nice value to have access to Boston, would stay again.

About the host
Hosted by Jessica Lupien
Welcome! I am a health psychologist and music therapist. I love living in Boston because it is near the ocean, has so many different architectural styles and parks and museums and musical venues and ethnic neighborhoods. I grew up in Italy and Africa, came back to the USA when I was 18 to go to Tufts University. Growing up, we were always hosting guests from all over the world, and we traveled a lot too and were hosted in our turn, with a kindness and warmth that meant the world to me as a child and teenager. So when I started renting out rooms in the house to travelers, a few years ago, my intention was partly to pass on some of that kindness and hospitality I had received. I look forward to hearing about your interests and plans for your trip, and to sharing ideas about things to do in Boston. I speak Italian and French as well as English, and can write and understand Spanish as well. I also have a translation app on my phone that allows me to converse with people in languages that I don't yet know. For example,. my assistant and I use it to converse in Chinese!
Why they chose this property
My great-grandparents bought this house around 1929 from the original owners, who built it in 1880. I bought it about 20 years ago from my great aunt, as I was going to university nearby. Generations of my family have lived here--medical people, engineers, meterologists, musicians and artists--so the upper part of the house is a bit like the Weasely's house in Harry Potter. full of fun Victorian touches, art, books, games and musical instruments. I also love the high ceilings, the ocean views and panoramic vistas from the windows, and the wood floors. Your apartment was created for my great-aunt, who needed a ground-floor residence all on one level. It has more modern feeling, with Japanese and Italian prints on the walls from her travels overseas.
What makes this property unique
The apartment you will be renting is newly renovated with wood floors, white walls with Japanese prints, wool rugs, and a glassed-in conservatory. It overlooks the garden and a long hillside, and you can see the ocean on the horizon from the deck and the dining area on clear days. We are less than half a mile from the Savin HIll subway station, a ten minute walk for most people through a safe area with restaurants, pharmacy, food market, laundromat and cafes. The beach is only a few blocks after the subway station, with tennis courts and playground nearby. The subway ride to the financial center of Boston is only ten minutes, the theater district is the next stop, and the stop after that is the beginning of the historic Freedom Trail, a self-guiding walking tour of Boston's revolutionary historic homes and meeting places. Go a few more stops and you are in the medical and high tech areas around MIT, then in the fun and hip Harvard Square. We also have bikes for you if you want to explore the bike trails near out house, which go to the John F. Kennedy Museum as well as to Carson Beach, Castle Island and South Boston. One thing that people have commented about is how much quieter it is at my house than staying in the city center. You are only ten minutes from the city center by subway, yet with the greenery and quiet of a suburb.
