About Property Manager
Bernadette and I met in 1979, married and settled into a small rural community west of Minneapolis where we enjoy the peace and tranquility of the nature around us. The early years did not afford much opportunity for travel but when our son left for college we decided to fulfill our desire to escape the cold and snow of Minnesota and travel to warmer climates. We traveled to many beautiful places over the past 10 years including the Florida Keys, Cabo San Lucas, Belize and many other areas of the Yucatan peninsula. . We first came to Isla Mujeres in the spring of 2003 where we fell in love with the beauty and simplicity of this paradise island. For those who appreciate all that the Caribbean has to offer, this island has it all. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets, gorgeous sand beaches, ocean breezes, great food, snorkeling, fishing… the list goes on and on. Perhaps the greatest asset that the island has to offer is the people who live here. They are warm and friendly and eager to make your stay in paradise one that you will never forget. Come join us!

Two families with 4 adults, 3 teenagers and 3 kids stayed at castillo del mar for ten days in march. The house was great! Plenty of room for the two families. Kitchen was well stocked and bedrooms were comfortable and plenty of bathrooms for a big group! Location in perfect for running out for groceries and even walking to many restaurants. We had a golf cart that could easily allow us to explore the island and it's beaches. Cleaning came in twice during the stay to change sheets, towels and clean which was awesome. Pool is little and not heated but hot sun in the morning made it perfect! Great views, great vacation...we loved Isla!
Very interesting place
The house was clean and as advertised. Marcella met us upon our arrival and gave us lots of good information about what to do and where to eat. The electricity was not working in part of the house, so she called the maintenance man right away. He was there in less than 10 minute and had it fixed. It would have been nice if the pool was little warmer, but we enjoyed sitting out in the sun. This side of the island is very windy, so we enjoyed the beaches on the other side of the island. There were a lot of stairs in the house which was difficult for my 85 year old mother. The two bedrooms on the main level had king beds, so those needed to be used by couples. It would have been nice to be able to leave the windows and doors open at night to enjoy the ocean breeze, but we were instructed not to do this for security reasons. No toilet tissue was able to be flushed, and this took some getting used too. This is true all over the island, so its not exclusive to the house. The food was amazing, and the island was very interesting - loved all the iguanas everywhere. The people were very hospitable and warm. We had a great vacation.
Thank you for taking the time to post a review. We are happy the house worked out for you. We had hoped that your mother would be able to stay on the main level and avoid the extra stairs. We were happy to hear our maintenance people were able to fix the electrical problem promptly. We have a very efficient team working with us. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the island and all it has to offer and hope you will consider us the next time you visit Isla Mujeres. Bernadette and Phil
Great space for our extended family vacation!
We had nine people stay at Castillo Del Mar -- five adults and four kids. The layout for us was perfect, and we had enough space so that family members felt they had both privacy and the space for all of us to be together. The location on the coast was lovely, with a grand view of the ocean, with the ocean breezes flowing into the home. We had runners and walkers take advantage of the coastline sidewalk every day, going both north and south. This location is quiet, away from the busy beaches and town area, albeit this area of Isla is among the locals and the streets are not kept as clean as the town area. We felt safe however at all times, even with the master bedroom sliding glass doors open all night, facing the pool and one level above the road.
The kitchen was well-stocked and we made many meals in the kitchen. We also hired a local family to cook a true mexican meal for us one night in the home, which was excellent.
The property managers were very responsive to all of our needs (e.g. more beach towels). Everyone slept soundly, except for 1-2 nights in which the family members on the top floor were kept awake by rattling doors and windows due to the high winds we were having those days. I can personally say that the master bedroom bed was one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in!
On the downside, the toilet in the master bedroom and shared bathroom off the family room need to be replaced. Everyone was committed to the island mantra of no paper in any toilets, but even then, these toilets rarely flushed properly.
The rooftop has great opportunity given the space and views, however, it is not very usable given no cover, no seating and the concrete floor.
We rented three golf carts to get around, and had a great time with that. Very easy to get around the island and haul everything we needed to for the beach.
Overall, we had a great vacation and I recommend Castillo Del Mar to other families and groups wanting to be together and enjoy a quieter space away from town.
This was our second time staying at Castillo del Mar and we loved every minute of it. This trip we brought two teen girls with us that practically lived in the swimming pool which is surrounded by tables, chairs and loungers and is such a relaxing and welcoming space. We ate many of our meals out on the oversized patio - there are tables and seating galore! The house is equipped with lots of games, a large TV in the living room loaded with movies, and a good library of books - all of which we enjoyed. The bedrooms were spotlessly clean, the housekeeper obviously takes pride in her work! The large king beds are super comfortable and nicely appointed with high quality bedding.
The views from the patio, kitchen and living room and also the bedrooms are of the beautiful Caribbean Sea and since we can never get enough of it, Castillo del Mar is perfect, for sunrise viewing and ocean watching!
We liked the neighbourhood very much and would walk each morning along the sea and then through the colonia. This area has lots of restaurants nearby and we felt very safe - always.
I read the review below this one, and it just doesn't seem to 'fit' with the area and how we saw it. For one, when we entered up the stairs through the locked gate and onto the poolside terrace, we felt very private and well protected. Also the house has many locks and we always felt completely safe. Although it is unfortunate, construction is an ongoing event on the island, but that is not something that can be controlled. We were glad to meet the neighbours and the owners of the new house that was recently constructed next door. It is very nice and adds an upscale feel to the neighbourhood with their tiled mural above the pool and super friendly owners.
Thank you Phil and Bernadette for sharing your Isla home with us! Would we return to Castillo del Mar? To the wide open views of the Caribbean Sea? To those large, comfy beds? To that chef's kitchen and to those loungers and pool? Yes we would! In a heartbeat.
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly!!
A large group of us rented Casa del mar for a fun getaway. The place has great views and plenty of bedrooms(the good). The cleaning people were in as we arrived, the place was scrubbed before we moved in. The next morning we started noticing small ants everywhere, on the walls, on all the desks, nightstands, and in the bed. By that evening the downstairs bedroom had to be evacuated and bleached from head to toe. Hundreds of ants had taken over the room and could not be occupied. The upstairs middle room had the same issue. We lost all of our snacks even in plastic. We had to shake our bed out to avoid unwanted bed guests. Only a couple of the TV's in the bedrooms worked the rest just had ant races(pun intended) or no picture at all. There is a house under construction adjacent to this property the hammering starts before 8 everyday. The upstairs palapa and pool are not in service.(the Bad). The real problem happened on the third night. We all had a long day of adventures and turned in early. I awoke at 4:30 am and found the back door of our room had been broken into. WE had locked both doors with the deadbolt before we turned in( the bottom locks were not functioning). They either broke through the shutters on the door or had a key. We lost over $2,000.00 worth of belonging including our only wedding video. They unplugged my wife's phone right next to her head. Talk about being freaked out!!! Other rooms also had tried to be breached as well. I must have scared them off when I woke up.. What if there had been children in this room? We were the third out of four rooms down the hall..
The police and property manager showed up after we called the next morning. She offered to put us up in a hotel but we rented this place to all be together and the damage had already been done. WE emailed the owner after our return and here was his response " Petty thieves here and everywhere in the world are individuals who look for opportunity and act on it. You can't imagine how many thieves prey on people who come home tired after a long day in the sun or ones who may have one extra cocktail". WE are avid travelers and keep our valuables locked up when we are not with them. To say it was a crime of circumstance is ridiculous, We were locked in a dead bolted room!!! (THE UGLY). This property is in need of some attention and the owners place all the security on its guests.
We appreciate the opportunity to respond to the comments of our last guest.
We can not begin to tell you how sorry we are for the losses that you incurred. Had it happened to us, we would be equally as angry. But, as we tried to explain in our letter, we cannot control all circumstance, especially as it relates to individual travel practices. After conversations with the local authorities and others in your travel party we can only conclude that a door or window was left open the night of the robbery. There was no sign of forcible entry and the act of breaking something would have likely awoken anyone within close proximity. Regarding additional comments, the house was rented exactly as described. It was freshly scrubbed and all of the televisions had been checked or replaced prior to occupancy. Our property managers respond immediately to what they are made aware of. If anyone requires assistance with anything, they only need to ask.
We are sorry that we unable to give you closure on this. If there is anything that we can leave you with, it is that one should not consider themselves too savvy when it comes to traveling to a foreign land. Bad things can happen to good people anywhere and any time. Be aware and stay secure in your person and in your possessions.
We hope that your next trip to Isla Mujeres is a better one.

Loved our Stay!
We own a rental property on Isla and needed a place to stay while it was occupied by guests. We were delighted with our choice of Castillo del Mar and felt right at home in this well-appointed villa. The incredible views of the Caribbean Sea from every window and terrace were truly stunning. The location is convenient to all the restaurants and loncherias in La Gloria and one block south of the new Isla 33 complex. The mayan themed décor is authentic and the kitchen is completely stocked with top of the line appliances and everything needed to prepare meals and snacks for large or small groups. Each bedroom includes a full ensuite and each room is designed so that you can enjoy that amazing view of the Caribbean Sea! The king sized beds rate among the most comfortable we have slept on and the wonderfully large master suite includes a sunken Jacuzzi that looks out onto the large pool deck. The swimming pool is beautiful and we enjoyed coming home from the beach or town each afternoon and taking a refreshing swim. After we cooled off, we would relax in one of the comfy loungers and watch the waves of the ocean and gaze at the sea for hours. There are more than enough loungers, comfortable chairs, tables and benches perfectly placed around the pool and nearby patio for entertaining, relaxing and enjoying the Isla vibe. Beach towels and everything you could think of are provided and we were happy to call Castillo del Mar our home away from home for our stay. Thank you Phil and Bernadette for thinking of everything and providing us with such a wonderful home for our mother/daughter vacation.
Hi Cori, Phil and I were so happy that you and your mom enjoyed your stay at Castillo del Mar. Coming from the owner of one of the most popular rentals on the island, your praise of the house meant a lot to us. We hope you'll keep us in mind should you ever need a emergency place to stay in the future. All the best! Berna and Phil
