We first fell in love with our beach house on Baynes Sound in 2006 and, over the course of two years, transformed it into the elegant oceanfront vacation home of our dreams.
We met in Montreal in 2003. Robin was from West Vancouver, a marketing director for Clinique skin care and cosmetics with a background in art and interior design. She designed home interiors and two restaurants on the mainland. Pierre, originally trained as a professional carpenter, was a fixture in Montreal’s film industry for his expertise in special effects. We were married in Vancouver in 2004 and moved to Union Bay shortly after.
Robin had travelled extensively during her 20 years with Clinique, and the time she spent staying in top hotels has informed her design expertise. Pierre’s skill and eye for detail was honed over many years of building things that needed to be just so. Together, we have a penchant for creating spaces that are both beautiful and functional.
Most of the materials used in the beach house’s renovation were refurbished and reused, such as the gorgeous floor boards, salvaged from the walls of an old barn on the Island and refinished to a honeyed gleam by Pierre. Patio bricks are recycled from a house in Courtenay torn down by Habitat for Humanity. The result is not only environmentally conscious, but gives the beach house an elegant old world charm, while offering all the modern conveniences.
We invite you to come and enjoy our beach house paradise. We know that you will love it as much as we - and all of our guests - do.
The Owner purchased this house in 2006
We chose the charming hamlet of historic Union Bay for our Bayside Beach House because it is so convenient to urban amenities in nearby Courtenay/Comox, and we were drawn to the artisan community in the Comox Valley, which was designated one of seven Cultural Capitals of Canada in 2007.
We pride ourselves on having thought of everything a vacationer could possibly want, from the most comfortable linens, beds and couches, to a flat screen TV and full sound system, to a fully equipped kitchen and large harvest dining table. These are the things we enjoy when we stay at our property, just the two of us or with friends and family.
We also love outdoor space you can use to the fullest no matter what the weather’s like, which is why we put in the expansive brick patio with its barbeque, built a cabana complete with hot tub, outdoor shower, and chandelier, and created two beach bonfire pits and put a brick barbeque down on the beach as well. There’s also a little herb garden for cooks to use. No wonder our guests find the Bayside Beach House as irresistible as we do.
I just wanted to re-iterate how wonderful your cottage is. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay. You and Pierre have created a relaxing, well-outfitted haven of fun. I wanted to let you know about the little touches that I especially appreciated:
1) Towels: I appreciated not only the white towels and the fact that they were luxurious and plentiful, but also the blue hot tub towels. I always bring my own beach towels, because many places don't come so well-supplied as yours.
2) Linens: I really appreciated the pillows and bed linens. You had wonderful down pillows and non-feather option (my aunt is allergic to feathers). Beautiful Quilts: the quilts reminded me of the south of France. Gorgeous.
3) Kitchen utensils: the garlic press! This is one of the few houses that actually provides a garlic press. (Kevin and I have rented several cottages on Salt Spring and Sunshine Coast) Dishes: plentiful and pretty for the numerous meals we ate here. Knives: a nice selection. Cheese Graters: lots of places don't bother with this and I used these quite a bit. Beautiful bowls and platters: again plentiful and gorgeous. We eat a lot of cheese and crackers, hummus and veggies, fruit etc so we used these a lot. Teapot: it was busy. Wine glasses: lovely and many. Glasses: again, plentiful as we had quite a few people and we never really ran out. All of the appliances worked well. A great selection of pots and pans. Generally speaking, this was one of the best outfitted kitchens that I've stayed at, if not the best. We do a lot of home meals so this aspect of your thoughtful hospitality was especially appreciated.
4) Laundry facilities: new and great.
5) Barbecue: also great.
General Cottage Qualities: You both did such a great job of creating several inviting social spaces, both inside and outside, and we used them all at different times.
My daughter's francophone boyfriend (Montreal) appreciated the fleurs de lis. :)
Well, I could go on and on but I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciated all these special touches as did my family.
Please feel free to post these comments.
We would like to thank Robin and Pierre for the use of their wonderful house. We had a terrific stay. It was such a pleasure to take our morning coffee on the oceanfront deck while the eagles soured overhead.
The kitchen was well stocked with all the dishes we needed. No need for restaurants. The house itself was beautifully decorated, creating a relaxing ambiance.
It was the perfect place to celebrate my sisters 60th birthday with people flying in from Alberta as well as those on the Island😀
We will be back:).
We cannot thank you enough for these amazing accommodations! My new fiancé booked this incredible house for a little birthday/Valentine’s Day getaway and when we arrived, there were fresh red roses, champagne, and chocolate! I’ve never been more surprised in my life!
We had the most amazing weekend here on this beautiful island that included skiing at Mt. Washington, relaxing our sore muscles in the hot tub, cooking two delicious home meals and waking up to wildlife outside the back door.
This house will forever be be where I turned 28, where my fiancé tried lobster for the first time, and where we got engaged! We can’t think of a better place to have these memories! Thanks for everything!
Andrew and Kell
As we sit at the airport waiting to fly home to our ordinary lives, I'd just like to thank Robin and Pierre so much for allowing us the opportunity of sharing their wonderful home. They've considered every possible touch for their guests' comfort and we enjoyed every moment. It was more than we had hoped for.
Our single son loved the privacy of the bunkhouse and our son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter had lots of room to themselves upstairs. We had loads of space and the kitchen was well equipped for all of our needs.
We all were thrilled with visits from the heron, eagles and seals (or are they sea lions?) and we took the opportunity of exploring Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Coombs, Cathedral Grove, Campbell River, Port Alberni, Comox and Courtenay. But our favourite spot of all was right there at the Beachhouse.
The extra touches of the birthday banner for my husband and the highchair and playpen provided for the baby were so much appreciated.
I highly recommend the Bayside Beachhouse and hope to return soon.
Instant Zen! I didn’t think it was possible, but you have achieved it here. We have travelled all over the world and have never found a place where we were so at peace and content. Every thoughtful touch was much appreciated ~ the towels, the music, the robes, the binoculars, the cozy comforters, and the tranquil charm of the house top to bottom. As a fellow collector, I appreciated how there was just enough to be interesting, but not too much.
We spent our days hiking and kayaking and then soaking in the hot tub under the stars, falling asleep to the sound of the waves. Coffee on the deck as the sun rose, watching seals and birds all around.
It just doesn’t get any better than this!
We will carry the magic with us in our hearts and look forward to returning next year (which, by the way, breaks our never go to the same place 2 x rule, but this is different).
Thank you for sharing this magical place with us!
This Beach House is absolutely delightful in every which way you could imagine!! The interior design, colors, accessories all lend to the unique charm of the house. Robin and Pierre have done an amazing job!!! You really do feel so completely relaxed here. We were able to cook lovely meals and for the four days we were here, we didn't feel the need to go out to eat. Everything you need is there plus some! Our son barbecued some oysters on the outdoor brick grill and they were amazing! We especially loved that they had a trunk full of games, puzzles and children's toys which our 14 month old grand daughter enjoyed!! They have thought of absolutely all details. The scenery is also spectacular. I was fortunate to be awake to watch the gorgeous sunrise!! We were able to watch the eagle, crane and hear the wonderful sounds of the seals. The weather also cooperated as it was beautiful for the whole time we were there! My husband and son rented a kayak and enjoyed the peacefulness on the ocean!! Our only regret was having to leave, but we will definitely be back!! I definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to get away to relax. It is an oasis, a little piece of heaven!! Thank you Robin and Pierre for sharing your vision and talents as you have created a haven for all to enjoy! (PS - Loved the hot-tub with the chandelier hanging over top....so glamorous!!)
We had a lovely time with our two sons at the beach house over Easter. The mornings were peaceful, the view amazing. The kitchen had everything we needed to make our own meals and the property had lots of great places for the Easter bunny to hide his treasures. Hot tub twice a day put us all in a relaxed mood and being able to have a fire on the beach made it even that much better. We hope to stay again and bring some friends. Thank you for sharing your wonderful beach house with us.
