My name is Tonia and I am Belgian. I would call myself a world traveler and nature lover. Colina Paula was purchased as a raw piece of land and transformed over the years to a private retreat. It has always been a labor of love and this place continues to be my paradise out of all places I own or have visited. Here is where my batteries get charged and I find peace. So will you.

TONIA purchased this house in 2008

Why TONIA chose Mercedes

I visited Costa Rica by chance 15 years ago. It felt like home. My son and I searched for one month to find a property in the mountains where no ac was needed, where we could retreat and be happy. At the urge of my son, I looked at this proerty as it is so close to town. It took years to create to what I call my piece of Costa Rican heaven.

What makes this house unique

The days here start of with an orchestra of all native bird singing and the sun smiling upon the mountains in the distance. Our Costa Rican coffee we have on any of the 3 porches on the comfortable seating of hammocks. Then follows a walk on the 20 acres property or a meditation or bird watching or a dip in the pool. So much to enjoy and so little time. When here, you may not want to leave as everything is right here. The house is homy, luxurious yet kind to the beautiful environment.

From the minute Tonia answered my request for info, I knew that our visit to this beautiful home just outside of Atenas was going to be a great experience. Having never been to Costa Rica, my friends and I wanted to rent a home which would allow us to be centrally located. We wanted to be able to get into town easily, enjoy a pool at the home, take day trips to volcanoes, parks, and beaches around the country, have access to someone who could escort us to the best sites, and to stay in a comfortable home. Colina Paula fit the bill perfectly. Tonia was incredibly helpful arranging for a driver to pick us up at the SanJose Airport, even suggesting to him (and to us via email) that he stop at a 'supermercado' so that we could purchase groceries and spirits before heading to her home. Arriving at Colina Paula, we found the website photos to be entirely accurate but still not able to capture the natural beauty of the tree/tropical plant/pasture-covered property. The house itself is most aptly described as classy and comfortable; the woodworking has been done by a master craftsman. Laid out for optimal views of gorgeous mountains and volcanoes in the distance and cross-breezes to enjoy in the house or on the wrap-around patio, the house is in an ideal location to enjoy cooking dinner on the huge gas grill, sipping coffee on the patio, swimming in the immaculately maintained pool steps from the house, and relaxing. Tonia's care for the house carries over to her care for her guests, having suggested and arranged for us to contact Walter, a tour van owner, to take us on incredible day trips that allowed. While we loved spending our mornings on the patio over breakfast we made in the well stocked kitchen, we were just as eager to wander into town feeling like Atenas natives, enjoy a massage on the beach, or try a challenging zipline. We sadly said goodbye but we will surely return.

5 wonderful weeks!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed 5 wonderful weeks at Colina Paula. The pictures on the website do it absolut justice. The weather was just perfect, only 2 minutes of rain, which brought out the noisiest chorus of Cicada’s I ever heard.

The hardest choices were which of the several beautiful seating areas to choose, which one offered the best chance of seeing birds at a particular time of day or the best breeze. We enjoyed the pool everyday, along with the Great Kiskadees, which liked to dive-bomb it for their daily belly bath. The house was spotless, beautifully decorated and generously equipped with paper goods, detergents, towels, wraps etc. and even a welcoming bottle of wine, so we did not have to purchase anything other than food (and more wine).

This was our first trip to Costa Rica, so we played it by ear regarding renting a car. Piet, the very amiable property manager, picked us up cheerfully from the airport at 4 am, due to a 5 hour delay. In the end, we decided against renting a car, as it was the nicest to just stay at the house. We used Piet’s driving service for a trip to La Paz Waterfalls (Poas was closed due to volcanic activity) and Manuel Antonio. Out of these 2 trips, La Paz was much more enjoyable and a must, but we found it worthwhile to also explore the Pacific Coast.

For shopping trips to Atenas and the nearby Toledo Coffee tour, we hired the very reasonable taxi service of grounds keeper Emilio’s relative Heriberto. One caveat for us seniors for relying on taxi service was the fact though, that the road to the house is very steep and somebody had to be by the road to open and close the gate, as the clicker did not work over that long distance. As there was no phone, Piet kindly lent us an old cellphone. The hoped for walk to Atenas proved not to be advisable. No sidewalks and somewhat hazardous. Sneaked into the neighbouring function facility with its even more spectacular grounds and views.

This house is perfect for 4 to 5 people. With just my husband and myself, I felt at times a bit isolated. He was happy as a clam about that though. We were surprised about everything in Costa Rica being behind locked fences, so not much opportunity for walks. I spent a lot of time exploring the fauna and flora on the reliable internet. (In case you will be wondering what those huge “nuts” are: They are “Stinky Toe” fruits. The noise on the roof elusive iguanas!)

... running out of characters! Missing having coffee outside!

Wow, what a great place to stay at in Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 4 with 2 boys, 15 and 13. We stayed for 10 days in August 2017, the green season. This was our first trip to Costa Rica and weren’t sure what to expect. The weather was very good during our stay, it was sunny in the mornings and then often some clouds in the afternoon, it rained sometimes around dinner time but not every day. The temperature was around 27C each day, very comfortable. The house is very private and peaceful. In CR there is wildlife everywhere so when the sun comes up the birds start their singing, we loved seeing toucans, humming birds, plus so much more wildlife right outside our door. Some days we just hung around the property and other days we did some day trips. We went to La Paz Water fall Garden Nature Park, Crocodile Man tour, Arenal Volcano, Jaco Beach, Baldi Hot Springs, to mention a few. Atenas is a nice small town, make sure to visit the farmer's market on Fridays. Tonia and the local property managers, Piet and Yvonne, were very helpful in answering all our questions. We will definitely consider at visiting CR again and hope to visit Quinta Colina Paula again.

A few general comments, the weather was much better than we thought, we wore shorts every day. The grocery stores and local restaurants are very good and a little cheaper than in the US. The tourist things are similar in price to those in the US, but what an experience. Car rentals are expensive as you have to take extra insurance. The driving style took some time to get used to but after a few days we were very comfortable at driving around.

Fabulous in every respect!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I along with our parents (in their 80's) just stayed there for 2 wonderful weeks. We can't say enough about the house, the owner Tonia and her property managers Piet and Yvon. They all went above and beyond. We were picked up at the airport on Christmas Day and Piet answered all of our questions

We wouldn't think twice about renting the property again.

Atenas is away from the crowds and commercialism which is what we wanted. We enjoyed the pool every day and night and walked the property to see the beauty of Costa Rica. We did several side trips, to the coffee plantation, Poas, La Paz, Manuel Antonio and La Carrera.

The house was very comfortable and up to date with everything to make your stay enjoyable. Would recommend it to anyone wanting a quiet stay.

We can't thank Tonia enough for letting us rent her house and for Piet and Yvon on making it so comfortable. Bravo to all of you and keep up the good work.
