Liz and judd are freelance creatives (food stylist and photographer) based out of the New York area who work for TV, food magazines, cookbooks and advertising clients. We custom built our home in Atenas because of the glorious views, the wonderful climate, and convenience to the small non touristy town feel that we enjoy. We are located near, but also far enough from, major roadways and the airport so traveling to spots throughout the country is relatively easy. We have put our heart and soul in making this house our own style and we hope and think you will love it too.
Liz purchased this Villa in 2006
Why Liz chose Cantón Atenas
In 2006 we were looking for a special property as a second home in Costa Rica. Picaflora, the name of our small community just outside of the town of Atenas was conceived as a Bali style home design partly for the beautiful architecture and also due to Bali's similar climate to Atenas. The property is set on a mountain ridge with several 100 year old trees and breath taking views. We have spent 10 years customizing the house with unique furniture, art work and landscaping.
What makes this Villa unique
In 2015 we built a a third bedroom on top of a deck that overhangs the ridge mountain with its own private balcony looking out at the spectacular view we love so much. The new bedroom has a private indoor/outdoor shower that enables you to watch toucans and other birds in the trees outside. There is a covered pergola for dining with a gas BBQ on the deck for outdoor dining under the stars. There are many gardens inter-twining the villa, including a cactus garden, orchards and many species of bird activity all year round. Living on a ridge affords us the cool breezes unique to the Atenas area.

This stunning home was absolute perfection! The location was fantastic, the views breathtaking, and the design spectacular! Overlooking an emerald green valley, the home looks straight out of an architectural magazine. With sunshine and tropical breezes during the day, and either mystical clouds, relaxing rains, or bright orange sunsets in the afternoon, this was one of the most serene and peaceful few days we have spent in quite time. We were able to relax and enjoy wonderful conversations, swim in the pool, host dinner parties (thanks to a very complete kitchen), BBQ at sunset, and read books in the occasional afternoon storm. My 2.5 year old daughter had a wonderful time, and loved watching the beautiful Brahman cattle grazing in the valley below, and the exotic toucans perched in the garden. The beds were comfortable, and the linens/towels were both good quality and clean. The washer and dryer were life savers, as was all of the information provided to us by the property manager and owners. It was a very complete experience, and we are so grateful that we came across a home with thoughtful owners who have clearly invested time and love into their property. We could not have been happier!!! We will definitely be back again next year, and would recommend this home in a heart beat!
Thank you so much for your excellent review.
We can't wait to have you back at the house.

Absolutely wonderful property and location!
We could not have been more pleased with Villa Passiflora for our week in Costa Rica! Liz and Judd were very communicative through the entire rental process, and even called us during our stay to make sure we were aware of the wildfires in a neighboring area. Their property manager Leticia met us upon arrival and was available all through our stay to make sure we had everything we needed. She even arranged for an authentic Costa Rican meal one evening and massages the next!!
Atenas is located in the Central Valley, which is ideal for day trips within the region. We rented a car, a necessity if you want to see multiple sites, and were able to visit Volcan Irazu, the San Lorenzo cloud forest, Playa Agujas and Playa Herradura during our stay. The roads do take longer to navigate, and be aware that there are many switchbacks depending on your destination.
Atenas itself is a quaint little town. We went to the town center several times for groceries and meals out. Parking is a bit of a pain since rental cars are only allowed to park in designated parking lots (no street parking), but we never had any issue. We enjoyed La finca restaurant, which has excellent wood stove pizza, and Pops ice cream shop across from the main park.
For some down time, we spent an entire day at the house and had plenty of entertainment. There is a pool that the kids enjoyed, but it was a bit too cool for us less venturesome adults. (Heated pools do not seem to be the standard in this region, which was not a problem for us.) In addition to the pool, the house has wonderful landscaping that attracts all sorts of wildlife. We saw toucans, parrots, and a band of monkeys from the house grounds throughout our stay. We also took walks within the community to look at the beautiful vistas.
We would definitely consider Passiflora for a second visit to Costa Rica. Pura Vida it is!
We really enjoyed reading your review. Thank you so much. Your description of your stay and the trips you made from our home is what every vacation home owner dreams of. We take great pride in our villa and we appreciate it when someone views it the same way we do. We hope you come back soon, there are tons of other exciting day trips to explore in CR. Thanks again. Best.

Wonderful experience all around!
My husband, 12 year-old daughter and I spent just over a week at this fantastic property. It did not disappoint! We loved the open, Balinese concept architecture and the fact that there was plenty of shade or sun to be had depending on your preference. There are three eating areas to choose from, two outside (one shaded, one partially shaded), and one inside. The furniture is all beautiful, natural wood and in keeping with the Balinese theme. There were just three of us, but the property can easily accommodate six, with three separate bedrooms with their own bathrooms. Each of the bedrooms is in its own building connected by breezeways which is great for privacy. The kitchen is lovely and equipped with everything needed to cook meals to eat in. There is also a barbeque. The supermarket in Atenas is well stocked, so no problems there! There are also great restaurants in town if one prefers to eat out. We loved Pizzeria la Finca - delicious wood-fired pizza and fantastic margaritas!
It is pretty much essential to have a rental car to get around, as the property is up on a hill above the town of Atenas. It is in a gated area with about 9 other properties, but you hardly know they are there!!
We really enjoyed the sounds of the birds and cicadas and the wonderful smells coming from the flowering gardens! We were visited by a toucan and enjoyed the resident iguanas and little lizards!! We also loved the daily parade of cows from the neighbouring farm!
There wasn't a problem at all with insects, I think I got one bite the whole time we were there!
The weather couldn't have been better - the days were a perfect 30 degrees and sunny and the nights a cool 19 or 20 degrees C, perfect for sleeping!
We undertook a few excursions, which we really enjoyed! I highly recommend La Garita chocolate tour, La Paz Waterfall Gardens and Zoo Ave (animal refuge). Unfortunately, we couldn't coordinate the El Toledo coffee tour (just up the road) into our schedule, but I hear it is fantastic!! Also, the coast is within driving distance if you want to take that in as well.
We had Heidi, the property's housekeeper, come in one night and cook us a traditional meal and it was sublime!!
The super awesome property manager, Leticia, is always available if you need anything, too!!
We highly recommend Villa Passiflora to anyone wanting to experience this area of Costa Rica!! We will definitely be back.
We are so thrilled that your family enjoyed the house and your review was spot on. Liz and I feel the same way about the house every time we are there. Thanks for expressing, in such detail, how we want everyone who rents our house to feel. Please come back soon.

If you want quiet: Here's your place
There is nothing lacking in the kitchen! They have everything you need. The pool was cool/temp upon arrival but as the days went on it became our most favorite spot. Rooms are clean, spacious and very nicely decorated. The location is superior. About 98% of the town of Atenas speaks English. Food in ALL the restaurants is yummy and the service is always so extremely friendly. If you're thinking of visiting Costa Rica come to this beauty!!!!
You should travel to Costa Rica just to stay here.
My wife and I and another couple had the pleasure to stay at Liz and Judd's place in Costa Rica for two weeks. The place was lovely, very comfortable and as depicted in the pictures. We enjoyed the pool and the views of the valley from the property. We had a warm welcome from Leticia when we arrived and both Liz and Judd where always ready to answer any questions we had. We used the villa as our base for daily road trips to the beach, waterfalls, other towns and cities and rainforests. There were an abundance of birds on the grounds and we saw a lazy sloth and a monkey in the trees on the property. We truly enjoyed our stay at the villa and would highly recommend it to anyone who visits Costa Rica as the place to stay.
We are so happy your vacation went well and
thanks for sharing your pictures of the sloth and monkey with us.

Photos so not do justice to the beauty of the place.
We enjoyed living in the perfectly designed and decorated rooms , set in the mountains of Costa Rica. I swam in the pool every day. Eating on the outdoor tables we enjoyed a breathtaking view. The property was exquisitely maintained.
Thanks for the great review and so glad you enjoyed your time at our house. Please come back soon.
