About Liz

Liz and judd are freelance creatives (food stylist and photographer) based out of the New York area who work for food magazines, cookbooks and advertising clients. We built our home on this spot in Atenas because of the glorious views, the wonderful climate, and convenience to the small non touristy town feel that we enjoy. We are well located near, but also far enough from, major roadways and the airport so traveling to spots throughout the country is relatively easy. We have put our heart and soul in making this house our own style and we hope and think you will love it too.

Liz purchased this villa in 2006

Why Liz chose Atenas

In 2006 we were looking for a special property as a second home in Costa Rica.

Picaflora, the name of our small community just outside of the town of Atenas was conceived as a Bali style home design partly for the beautiful architecture and also due to Bali's similar climate to Atenas. The property is set on a mountain ridge with several 100 year old trees and breath taking views. We have spent 10 years customizing the house with unique furniture, art work and landscaping.

What makes this villa unique

In 2015 we built a a third bedroom on top of a deck that overhangs the ridge mountain with its own private balcony looking out at the spectacular view we love so much. The new bedroom has a private indoor/outdoor shower that enables you to watch toucans and other birds in the trees outside. There is a covered pergola for dining with a BBQ on the deck for outdoor dining under the stars.

Best Location for some down time in Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

What a spectacular stay. The hosts are easy to work with and sorting out arrivals/how to get there etc was easy. The house is beautifully kept up with a lush tropical garden, great pool and splendid views. The house is set back from a country road in a private drive on a beautiful promontory. You do need a rentacar to get around as town is some kilometers away. Atenas itself is very nice and there is easy access to the highway to the Pacific coast. We will definitely stay there again.

Beautiful house

  • 3 of 5

The house is every bit as beautiful as pictured. Just a few things to be aware of — 1) be sure to click on the description of the air conditioning, it is really ceiling fans and open doors, 2) in 2 of the 3 bedrooms, the bathroom area is seperated from the sleeping area by only a partial wall, less privacy then we would have liked, and 3) the only TV is in master bedroom and is it functional only for streaming from your computer or watching DVD’s.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately this is a spiteful review from someone who tried to manipulate a refund from us but did not get her way. Maureen, you entered a contract to rent our home for 2 weeks. Your friends were going to join you, but last minute could not. While at the house, you chose to cut your trip short and head home to Florida. Somehow, despite the fact that you agreed to our cancellation policy AND your early departure was NOT due to an emergent issue, you felt entitled to a partial refund. I offered you a discount on a future stay, but you responded saying "your offer of a future discount is of not value to us". I explained that such a short notice cancellation gave us no time to re-rent the house thus being a loss of income for us. We take our rentals seriously, and we expect the same in return from renters. When you and Mark first arrived at our home, I was happy to receive a report from our property manager that you were both "so happy with your choice" of our home. And you also wrote to me separately stating that "Mark and I have been enjoying your beautiful home...". Our communications were initially quite pleasant and there no complaints whatsoever. Once you received my response to your discount request, things slowly began to change. At one point my husband called you directly in any effort to clarify a few things on both sides. You told him how beautiful the house and how much you enjoyed your stay, but you expected a few hundred dollars back for your early departure, as if you were doing us a favor. Eventually you delivered us our only 3 star review due to a few banal reasons. Your comments about the AC are truly disingenuous especially since you know full well that the weather is temperate there and even cool during the green season when you were there. No one in the hills of Atenas has AC because it's not necessary due the eternal springtime climate. So, a TV with a DVD player (and plenty of DVDs) plus a toilet location is reason to give a "beautiful home" just an average review? It's unfortunate that this is what you decided to write about your stay at our home and it's clear why. As a homeowner who cares deeply about creating a unique tropical experience for renters and takes great pride in doing so, I refuse to be strong armed by tenants who use the review process as some kind of shakedown. You should be aware that owners are able to review and rate tenants just the same.

Hilltop Paradise

  • 5 of 5

I've traveled extensively and I have to say this is one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited. The property is perched on the crest of a ridge and offers stunning views of the valleys and hills that surround it. The house itself is gorgeous and has all the creature comforts one could desire. I would highly recommend this little gem to anyone, especially nature lovers, and am quite certain that I will return. Kudos to owners Judd and Liz and their property manager, Laeticia, for creating and maintaining this exquisite vacation retreat

Beautiful home

  • 4 of 5

We loved the location, the views, the many places to enjoy the outdoors. The biggest problem was the rainy season. It rained every afternoon for hours, and sometimes in the evenings. In order to get to the bedrooms, you have to leave the main part of the house and go outside. While it was covered, we got a bit damp. The humidity was very high, so our clothes felt damp and towels never dried. However, the house itself was lovely and we enjoyed the very well-equipped kitchen. The bedrooms each had their own bath. My partner and I stayed in the master, which had an "open" bathroom behind a rock wall. There's no door or ceiling, so be prepared to hear everything going on in the bath!

Owner's Response: Mary, Thanks for your review and we are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. 2017 has been an especially rainy "green" season. We had the worst storm (Nate) in the 50 years occur in Oct. Weather has been severe all over the world as well this year. Normally the mornings are beautiful ( birds singing etc.) and by 3pm the clouds roll through the valley and it begins to gently rain. Atenas is considered one of the best climates in the world by National Geographic mag. Hope you come back and the weather is fabulous. Judd and Liz

Magnificent property and setting

  • 5 of 5

First, the pictures don’t do justice to the quality of this magnificent property.

It is really difficult to describe in simple words.

The house is located in the mountains 5 minutes from Atenas and all services (grocery, restaurants, bank, gas, etc), and is surrounded by lush and incredible vegetation, flowers, plants, pots….The scenery is magical ... One would even say that this vegetation gently envelops this remarkable property.

Upon arrival, we are conquered and charmed by the four Bali-style building pavilions (one main + 3 full bedrooms and bathrooms). All the details fully meet all our needs and have been carefully thought of, from the furniture to the lighting, the kitchen apparels, etc.

Impeccable, gigantic and warm, we enjoyed the many relaxation areas and the splendid swimming pool.

Having breakfast every morning under the pergola was a very good way to start the day…what a view !

The atmosphere of this house as well as the breathtaking view of the mountains makes it an inevitable choice. We would have spent the rest of our lives there…You will be amazed !!
