About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 4 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Set on a hillside terrace overlooking Playas del Coco, 'Casa Holmes' has won several awards and been featured in magazines and books on Latin American architecture. Every room and bathroom has a view not to be missed. People are spellbound when they first enter the house. The house fits harmoniously on the site. The house even incorporates the granite base rock into its living spaces.

We have taken great care to provide our guests with a memorable stay. We have a resource library on the flora and fauna and culture of the region as well as pool-side reading, an infinity lap pool that overlooks Coco Bay, imported bathrobes, local organic bath products, maid service and much more. All of this just a 4 minute walk down our hill to the beach or a 12 minute walk to the center of town. The location of this retreat villa is outstanding.

About the Architect: Costa Rican architect Victor Cañas designed the house. Cañas is Costa Rica's premier architect and his renown extends throughout Latin America. He describes himself as a 'tropical modernist' and he is known for his sensitive understanding of the site. His houses combine solidity of material with a lightness and openness that create a sense of harmony with the environment. There is no excess in Casa Holmes' design and every detail feels right. Casa Holmes may be Cañas' masterpiece.

About Nita Holmes

We both come from a strong background of art and beauty and have had the privilege of traveling and staying in some fabulous places. My husband, a landscape architect, and I could not pass up building our own dream home with a world class architect on a world class site. We designed Casa Holmes to be a place where our own family would like to return to while keeping in mind what we valued as guests while visiting new places.

Why Nita Holmes chose Costa Rica

At the time of when we built Casa Holmes we had many sites to choose from. We choose this one because of the spectacular view with almost voyeuristic intimacy with Playas del Coco Bay while being removed enough to give our guests the privacy most of us relish. It is literally a short 3 minute walk to the beach.

What makes this house unique

The siting of Casa Holmes is extremely unique. We think its simplistic beauty creates a place to relax and reflect. Being in the landscape business locally we are continually doing things to the property to enhance our guests experience, ie kitchen herb garden, tropical gardens , and fruit trees planted. We do not pretend that Casa Holmes is perfect and yet we hope our attention to detail inside and out makes a difference to our guests experience. We want our guests to leave feeling pampered and rejuvenated from the beauty that surrounds them.

Notes:
Although our property and house orientation is focussed on optimal access of ocean views and capitalizes on the natural stone behind it we have also invested in creating mini gardens with themes of bromeliads, cacti, kitchen herbs, etc. The lighting at night highlights these if you are out about enjoying all the local activities during the day. In keeping with our goal we are constantly improving Casa Holmes. We just recently put a salt water filter system in our pool. We can attest it is a better healthier experience.

Week at Casa Holmes in Playa del Coco

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our week at this VRBO - incredible views from each room of the house. The driveway was very steep but as the week went we got used to it - had a car so not much walking up and down. Couldn't have these views without the steep drive - and this is common for most houses in this part of the country. The beach is a hike - could probably make it in 10 minutes but not an easy walk. As far as the house itself, we thought it was great - suggestions would be adding a TV in the living area (all bedrooms have sat TV's) - and maybe improve the A/C in the living area. Kenya, the house manager, was great as well as the Zindis group! - helped us throughout the week. We used TicoTours at their suggestion for setting up excursions and Marco was amazing - he gave us so many ideas on things to do, places to eat, facts about the country, and he was so polished! - everyone in the group loved Marco! - they picked us up at the house for each excursion. We loved Coco beach - many tourists around but the area was not as developed as places like Cabo - you're eating outside in most all restaurants (tho food was good) - but no crowds ever that we noticed - the people were unusually friendly everywhere we went. Knowing a little Spanish helps but not essential. We loved it and will definitely go back - probably for longer than a week next time!

Owner's Response: Jimmy, Thank you so much for adding your review and the house suggestions. Because I tore both meniscus a while ago in the US, I usually ask my husband to park at the bottom of the hill or near the beach club if we are are going to walk the beach. It is a 3 minute walk to the beach but you are correct the hike up from the short cut takes a little longer. Our grandchildren wth their parents were like mountain goats going up and down our driveway. I think they liked the challenge. Oh to be that young! l prefer the ride up in the car. I'll suggest that Kenya tells other guests this is an option. It sounds like your group really took advantage of getting to know the area through Marco. I am proud of our house management team. It has taken years to get such a professional caring group. We are glad Wes and Lisa, the owners of Zindis, chose to move here and take this on! I hope you and yours have a good rest of the summer. Nita Holmes

Stunning home with incredible views - didn't want to leave!!!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at Casa Holmes. Our group consisted of myself, my husband (celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary), and two kids ages 15 and 11. There are so many positive things to write about this home, it's hard to know where to start. The location is stunning - perched up on a hillside with completely unobstructed views of the bay. The driveway is a bit steep, as others have mentioned, but it did not cause any issues for us. The use of windows over almost 100% of the west facing rooms gave unparalleled views of sunsets, the surf, and beach activity. Our favorite things: 1) waking up to that view!!! We slept with the blinds open so that the first thing we would see in the morning was the bay (I could never get tired of that!!); 2) waking up early and reading on the deck (so peaceful); 3) swimming in the pool after time on the beach; 4) exploring the rocks on the beach during low tide; 5) pineapple smoothies for breakfast each day (loved using the Vitamix!!); and 6) just enjoying nature (birds, bugs and flowers, as well as a rather large iguana that seemed to live under the slab at the far end of the pool! He was quite entertaining to watch). We made use of the games and puzzles completing the wooden fish puzzle twice (all pieces were still there Nita!), and enjoyed using the binoculars. Overall the house was very well appointed with pretty much everything we could possibly need. We did not use the beach chairs, toys or snorkeling gear but if we were there longer, they would have been useful. Ample towels for beach and home were provided as well as some delicious local snacks and products to sample. We felt that Nita (and Lisa/Zindis) went out of their way to make us feel welcome and we truly appreciated how well they prepare for their guests. We would most definitely stay here again and could easily bring several more people with us and still have room for everyone!! I really do not have anything negative to say about our stay at Casa Holmes. It did take us a couple of days to get 'used' to living in the house - there are many, many lights switches and remote controls since it is a high tech home :-) We had a hard time figuring out the house alarm and invariably set it off every time we used it. We did not care for the town of Coco very much, especially at night, but we had some great meals at Citroen, Le Coq, and Kaixo. Overall, we had an incredible stay at Casa Holmes and have many wonderful memories!!!

The house was very comfortable and well appointed. The pool and views were amazing!

  • 5 of 5

The home's design was very unique and afforded amazing views throughout. It was clean and well maintained and managed. Being up on the bluff also provided us with a nice breeze. It was only a short walk to the beach below which offered calm surf and velvety sand.

Perfect house in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We knew to expect a steep driveway from other reviews, and it exceeded expectations! We challenged ourselves to the driveway workout daily - with the reward of the amazing pool!

The house had non stop views. We loved waking up to the view from the master bedroom everyday. Breakfast out on the patio listening to monkies and watching the birds bathe and drink along the pool edge. We enjoyed many dinners in the same location. We also appreciated that you could walk into the house dripping wet and not have to worry about the floors.

It was just the two of us, but the house could fit many more people with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms upstairs, and then the separate space downstairs.

We had a rental car, but will probably not bother to get one on future trips. The walk to town is about a mile and very enjoyable along the beach. And yes, that means we will definitely rent this house again.

Nita was great to work with. As was the Zindis group and our rental manager Kenya. We used the concierge to arrange a riverboat tour which was great and they picked is up right at the bottom of the driveway. We worked directly with other tour groups for white water rafting and a fishing charter. We had a great meal at home from Rocio Larin which was very nice for Nita to provide.

We were happy to have the alarm but several times we came back to the house with the alarm being triggered by the gardeners or the pool cleaner. This was reported to Kenya. The alarm is the only negative I can come up regarding the house for our entire stay!

All in all a fantastic stay. Staying at Casa Holmes has made this visit to Costa Rica the best one so far. Can't wait to come back!

Gorgeous views, exquisite home...

  • 5 of 5

Three couples enjoyed every moment of the Casa Holmes experience. The home is right out of Architectural Digest. Beautifully appointed, every effort is made for a guest's enjoyment. The kitchen has absolutely everything one needs to have a fabulous dinner -- we never did go out. We preferred the beautiful deck to any restaurant - sundowners were spectacular. Nita is a wonderful hostess/owner, answering every question w equanimity. She even thoughtfully left a cake for our birthday boy, as it was on our arrival day! We are already talking about going back. We loved Casa Holmes!

Beautiful sunsets and total privacy

  • 5 of 5

Our families had a wonderful vacation at Casa Holmes. Nita was so accommodating and easy to deal with. In other years I have worried about legitimacy of a listing and details of payment. Not so this time. Nita was obviously willing to help us in whatever way she could, and very thoughtful.

The house is well appointed and the kitchen is excellent for people who like to cook. We ate out on the deck each night although we learned that glassware was not a good idea with the occasional wind gust sending things flying.

It is a short walk to the beach and the ocean was wonderful to swim in. The guys walked to town for exercise and beer. And yes, the last leg up the hill is where the exercise comes in.

I was impressed by the amount of shade available on the deck area. No worries about burning, but on the other hand, I felt like I was out in the open and part of nature.

We enjoyed watching all the birds using the pool to cool off, and the iguanas. We heard the odd howler monkey but sadly did not see any.

We had a baby with us. The two bedrooms connected by a shared bathroom were perfect for mom and dad and baby.

The lower bedroom is accessed by a very narrow winding staircase which makes it a little challenging.

The main living area gets pretty warm for a few hours in the afternoon, but then we were able to open all the glass and let cool breezes come through. The openness and views are stunning.

We bought some excellent shrimp at the downtown fish market and the vegetable stall off the main street is reasonably priced and has a good variety. There seems to be a lot happening downtown, but I was content to just swim and relax.
