Perfect cozy cabin
I was in town to run the Savage Marathon. The race start/finish was only 10 minutes down the road. This cabin was the perfect place for me. It was a great size, quiet, private, and had everything I needed to cook a few meals and clean up after the race. Stopped by the Greeter Grill after the race and had a great burger and fries. I love camping at Savage Gulf Preserve but this is a perfect option when I’m not feeling up to camping.

My husband and I had a great stay here for several nights. The cottage was super clean, very well stocked, and a quaint getaway close to hiking trails and waterfalls. Joe was very accommodating, flexible, and friendly. We will definitely stay here again if we visit this area in the future.

About the host

Hosted by Joe Gray

Host profile image
The Gray family has lived in middle Tennessee since the late 1700's. Dr. and Mrs. Joe Gray, Sr. retired to the mountain in 1990, and we have loved the area ever since. Dawn and I have 2 daughters and 3 grand kids who call us Bunny and Joey. We hope to retire in the area in the coming years.

Why they chose this property

Dr. Joe Gray became familiar with Grundy county while preaching at Bybee’s Branch Church of Christ in the 1950’s. He held many gospel meetings in the area and became familiar with many of the folks, including Fanny Moffitt and other members of the Northcutt family.

The Moffitt Manor in Altamont was built in 1885 by the Northcutt family and was made famous by Fanny Moffitt. My parents purchased this house in the 1980's and lived there for almost 30 years.

This lodge property has such a wonderful history. The lodge was built in 1954 and was a window factory, building supplier, and feed store owned by 3 brothers of the Northcutt family (Northcutt Brothers Building Supply). Originally, the Northcutt family had a large sawmill, home place, barns and chicken house on this property as well. Some of these buildings survive while others have not. The Northcutt's have been a prominent family in Grundy county for many generations.

My father purchased the lodge in the 1990s and used it to store antiques and more. After he passed away, we began restoring it for a family retreat. We decided to share with others and have been working on it since 2019.

We love the history of the area and the properties we have been involved with in the past 3 decades or so. We love the many friends we have made and continue to make most of all.

What makes this property unique

When finished in summer/fall 2021, the indoor common area can be rented separately and has a large dining area for up to 40, 3 separate living/recreation rooms, a large kitchen and 2 half baths. This is a wonderful place for gatherings of family, church, weddings, corporate, friends and all types of groups. This is in addition to 7 living units which are available individually.
