About this property

Circa 1900 ~ The Cottage at Chappell Hill ~ Private ~ Romantic ~ Pond ~ Fenced

Only 8 miles to Brenham and 27 miles to Round Top, The Cottage at Chappell Hill is a 125-year-old antique farmhouse perched above a small pond located in a tiny, Hallmark-type town (pop. 300). Formerly owned by artist Kiki Newmann, the cottage has been known as the “Healing House” for decades. It's the perfect spot to escape the city, celebrate a special occasion, and create cherished memories. Downtown is 1/2 mile away with unique shops, diners, historic landmarks. Book your stay today and let the magic unfold. You deserve a get away.

The Cottage at Chappell Hill, built in 1900, is located in the Birthplace of Texas, which has a rich history of German and Polish settlers. Built of European craftsmanship, this Victorian cottage is the epitome of old world charm blended with early American luxury. Modern amenities include Starlink Wi-Fi, king bed, sofa bed, stove/oven, vegan toiletries plus a stocked kitchen with complimentary coffee, tea, and snacks.

This is more than just a place to stay; it's an invitation to experience the true essence of a one-of-a-kind cottage that envelops you with peace, romance, and charm. Guests return time and again to unwind, explore the lovely countryside, and thrive in the small town vibes.

Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by cardinals and bluebirds. You'll likely spot deer and fireflies too. You may even spot the local fox and armadillos. The large front porch, adorned with gingerbread trim, is the perfect spot for coffee, tea, and/or wine while being surrounded by native pecan trees, grapes, and garlic. A sign from Germany welcomes (Willkommen) you as you as enter the stained glass front door, made in England.

Inside, you'll marvel at the original shiplap walls, victorian sash windows, tin ceiling, antiques furnishing, and more. A drawing the original owner, Mr. Charles Martin Meister, is on the shiplap in the living room closet. Born in Germany in 1865, he became a prominent local figure in interior architectural ornamentation. His contributions are documented in scholarly works on Texas decorative arts. The cottage was professionally decorated by "The Irish Lady", an interior designer.

The cottage faces Main Street (FM 1155) and is only a half mile from darling downtown Chappell Hill, which is known for its historic architecture and cultural heritage. The town is located inside Stephen F. Austin's (the Father of Texas) original colony. See below if you'd like to learn more about him and Chappell Hill.

We suggest that you to book early for all holidays, March-April Bluebonnet season, April Bluebonnet Festival, July 4th parade, October Scarecrow Festival, December Teddy Bear Parade, Round Top Antique Fairs (Jan, Mar, Oct), Texas A&M games, concerts, county festivals and events.

HISTORY OF WASHINGTON COUNTY:
Stephen F. Austin played a significant role in the colonization of Texas by bringing the first group of settlers to the region in 1821; He was appointed by the Mexican government as an empresario, or land agent, to bring 300 families to settle in Texas.

Most of the German settlers who arrived in Washington County were primarily farmers and craftsmen. They were attracted to the area by the fertile soil and the promise of land ownership. They brought with them their language, culture, and traditions. They established their own communities, built churches, and established schools that taught in the German language. They also introduced new crops to the area, such as grapes and peaches, which helped to diversify the local agriculture. The area saw an influx of Polish immigrants in the late 1880s, which helped revitalize the community after an economic disruption caused by the Civil War and a yellow fever epidemic.

Many German settlers in Texas had fled Germany due to the suppression of democratic movements in 1848, seeking freedom and equality in America. They had a strong belief in liberty and equality. Most were abolitionists who viewed slavery as an abomination. They were forced to fight in the Civil War for the Confederacy even though the Germans were anti-slavery and their Unionist views clashed with Confederate authorities. Some Germans rebelled and formed militia groups to resist the Confederate draft. The state government saw these acts of resistance as evidence of Union sympathies, creating a climate of suspicion and distrust. In 1862, Confederate authorities began drafting German settlers into the Confederate Army, but many refused. Confederate troops responded by confronting the resisters, leading to the deadly Nueces Massacre on 8/10/1862, where many German Texans attempting to flee to Mexico were killed by Confederate soldiers. The Germans were trying to escape forced conscription into the Confederate Army. Texas imposed martial law to suppress unionist sentiment and enforce the Confederate Conscription Act, which mandated military service for able-bodied men.

My German ancestors (surname Frank) arrived to the area in the mid-1800s and are buried at the Eben-Ezer Lutheran Church on South Berlin Road in Brenham and a homestead next to a Chappell family burial site.

Perfect for our decompress trip

It's such a charming cottage and was perfect for us to just get away and chill. Very nicely furnished and decorated. The sofa and bed were quite comfy, something u don't always get. Washer/Dryer helped us pack fewer clothes. Owner was great, very communicative, accommodating and helpful with food suggestions. We loved the porch and spent every morning and evening there. Would 100% return.

Well appointed little cottage

This was a terrific little get away spot! It felt like I was a world away from hectic everyday life, but really was just about 30 minutes from my home in Cypress. The rental is well done with lots of little details that helped me feel at home. Check in and check out were super easy! This was a perfect location for me to get away for a day or two.

Love this place!

2nd time staying in 4 months. The property is just perfect for our needs and the host is so nice. The refrigerator is a little small but wasn't an issue for us especially with 2 good places to eat right down the road. This is a truly dog-friendly place and our pup enjoyed the fenced in front yard.

Perfect place for weekend getaway!

We booked this nice little home in Chapel Hill for the weekend to attend the George Strait concert at Kyle field. It was the perfect place, not too far to drive to College Station and far enough to be out of the crowded city. If that's what you like, then this is the place. There are a couple nice restaurants just a mile or so from the house and the food was great. Rechelle, the host, was very friendly and communicated everything we needed to know well ahead of our arrival. We had a very pleasant experience. Thank you Rechelle!

The perfect weekend!

We loved this cottage in cute & charming Chappell Hill. Our dogs loved the yard and the porch, and we did too. All of the amenities were awesome and the bed was so comfy. We really loved our stay in this very clean and comfy weekend getaway. Shopping and stores in Brenham are close by but far enough to feel like you're in the country - which you are! Being there during bluebonnet season was also a plus. :) We hope to return!

Quaint Cozy Cottage

This was our second stay. We've fallen in love with this place. There is something magical and peacefilled here. My favorite is sitting on the deck or porch having delicious coffee provided and reading a book early morning listening to the birds. Occasionally we see deer. Our dog loves the yard, porch and deck as well. It has all the amenities needed and much more. The location was great for our needs. The owner is quick to respond and very pleasant to work with. We hope to return.

Perfect retreat from the city

This cabin will take you back in time. Everything about the cabin and property was beautiful. It is located so close to the historic downtown and only a two hour drive from our home in Houston. The perfect getaway! We took our dog and he loved the grounds and we didn’t have to worry about anything because the yard is perfectly secure with a fence. The home had everything and I mean everything you could possibly need. They have definitely thought of everything when putting this place together for renting. The host was very nice and great communication. We will definitely be back.

Charming Cozy Country Cottage

We were so impressed by this very charming Texas cottage. It is decorated so adorably cozy. Everywhere you turn it is filled with well thought out detail and amenities to make our stay comfortable. We loved sitting on the porch watching our dogs play in the fenced yard. I loved sitting on the deck early morning listening to the birds, watching for deer and having a cup of coffee or tea from the exceptionally well stocked adorable country kitchen. At night with the tiny twinkling lights in the yard and on the house it feels magical and romantic sitting on the porch. The host was always quick and pleasant to respond to my questions. It was a great location for us as we visited friends who live between Brenham and Bellville. Washington on the Brazos is just down the country road. Chappell Hill has some quaint shops, historic churches and nice restaurants. We travel often, have stayed in a variety of places, and must say we thoroughly enjoyed this cottage and would love to go back someday!

December Stay

The property was a quaint little cottage that was decorated with an antique feel. Everything was as advertised and when our stay in early November has to be rescheduled due to multiple emergencies, the host quickly responded to my request to reschedule for December. The only issue was the house was a bit drafty during the cold temperatures. I would definitely recommend a friend to stay here.

My German ancestors settled in this county in the 1800s. As a Houstonian, I longed for a country cottage near my German roots. After years of searching, I finally found it. It was a blessing! I love sharing the cottage with others so they can create new memories, experience the beauty, explore the sites, and learn about the local history. My German ancestors are buried in Brenham.

Fun fact: Abraham Lincoln is my 5th cousin 5x removed :)

Why they chose this property

Historic Chappell Hill (population of 300) is known for its historic architecture, rich cultural heritage, the annual Bluebonnet Festival in Spring and Scarecrow Festival in the Fall. Founded in 1847, it's located in Washington County, which is in Stephen F. Austin's original colony. He is known as the "Father of Texas" and played a significant role in the colonization of Texas by bringing the first group of American settlers to the region in 1821. He was appointed by the Mexican government as an empresario (land agent) to bring 300 families to settle in Texas.

Most of the German immigrants who settled in Washington County were primarily farmers and craftsmen. They were attracted to the area by the fertile soil and the promise of land ownership. They brought with them their language, culture, and traditions and established their own communities, churches, and schools that taught in the German language. They also introduced new crops to the area, such as grapes and peaches, which helped to diversify the local agriculture.

The birthplace of Texas is considered to be Washington-on-the-Brazos. It was here that delegates from across Texas met in 1836 to sign the Texas Declaration of Independence, officially declaring Texas as a separate republic from Mexico. This event paved the way for the Texas Revolution, a critical moment in Texas history. There are several historical sites and museums that commemorate this important event in Texas history, including the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site and the Star of the Republic Museum.
