The vineyards are some of the best in the US and similar to southern France. Arizona Vineyards is a popular roadside attraction in Nogales on the way to Mexico. Located less than one hour from the resort, the wines are unique and have classic Southwestern names such as Rattlesnake Red, Desert Dust and Coyote Red. (520) 287-7972.
1830 E. Patagonia Hwy., Rt. 82, Nogales
I-19 south to Exit 289 then turn left on E. Ruby Rd. Turn right on Pendleton Dr. then right on Circulo Montana. Make a right on Patagonia Lake Rd. and left onto AZ-82. Another way to go through Nogales is to Exit 4 on I-19 and turn east onto Magnolia and make a right hand turn at Grant (Fast Gas Station) and go 1 mile to Highway AZ-82.
About an hour south of Tucson, the Callaghan Vineyards have been producing award-winning wines for over fifteen years. Owner Kent Callaghan aptly named his 17-acre vineyard “Buena Suerte” (or “Good Luck” in Spanish) and has won many kudos for his fine wines, including the highly-praised 1996 Fumé Blanc. The winery is open Friday thru Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (520) 455-5322.
336 Elgin Rd., Elgin
I-10 to Exit 281 then take Route 83 thru Sonoita. Go four miles to Elgin Rd., then turn left at the “Elgin Wine Country” sign and go three more miles to the vineyard.
Another winery near Mr. Callaghan’s establishment is the Sonoita Vineyards. Co-owner Dr. Gordon Dutt was a soil scientist at the University of Arizona when he and A. Blake Brophy established their first experimental vineyard in 1973. They found that the high altitude (5,000 feet) soil is nearly identical to the soils of Burgundy, France. The 20-acre vineyard now produces over 10,000 gallons per year. Their 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon had the distinction of being served at the White House. The winery is open 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., seven days a week. (520) 455-5893.
H.C. 1, Box 33, Elgin
Follow I-10 to Exit 281 then take Route 83 thru Sonoita. Go four miles to Elgin Rd. then turn left at the “Elgin Wine Country” sign. Four miles past the Village of Elgin Vineyards, turn right at the Sonoita Vineyards sign. Proceed 2.5 miles to the vineyard. You can also go I-19 and get off at Exit 4 (Mangolia) and turn left. Make a left 1 mile to Highway 82 and go past Patagonia to Sonoita. Turn to Elgin Rd to go to the wineries.

The wild life is delightful. There were over 95 birds identified by birders who came in April 2014. There is a complete list in my traveler's book.

There are lots of things to do all year around. October is the perfect time to travel to the wineries, bird watch, golf and hike. For a detailed list of tghe events each month, go to eventful.com. The state and national parks are wonderful to visit to see the early history of the area when the Spanish first came. Jaun Baptista de Anza came here on October 1775 and is very famous. The Titan Missile Museum, Old Historic Towns and Villages and Bars of Rural Arizona. Has ten nearby golf courses. At the first Friday of the month, there are art walks in Tubac and most of the time there is live music in the square. The art in the studios and shops are wonderful and there are many items that you can get that are from Mexico. There is also a Duty Free Store just prior to entering Mexico and they have a wide selections of perfumes and liquors. There is wonderful bakeries in Tubac and Rio Rico, so plan on eating well and doing lots of outdoor activities to work it off. The birding is some of the best in the country.
If you are a Silver Sneakers member, there are 3 places that accept your membership, one with a year around swimming pool.
There are now two hospitals: St. Mary's in Nogales and Green Valley Hospital in Green Valley. Tubac Fire Department has IEMT's 24/7 and they are very good. I have been to both ED rooms and they both give good service, but I found Green Valley's ED to have newer equipment. There is also an urgent care off the left hand side of Duval Mine Road and they give good care also.

She grew up near Playa del Rey and has traveled throughout Mexico, Central America and northern and Central South America' In addition many of the provences of Canada and Alaska. She has also traveled through Spain, France, Germany, Cyprus and the Canary Islands . She enjoys birding near the Santa Cruz River and hiking. She is a mom and has two daughters and two sons all whom enjoy this location to hike, golf, and to hang out and relax.
Why the Owner Chose Rio Rico, AZ, USA:
I built this home originally for myself, but since it only has only a 2 car garage, I decided on building another one that has a 3 car garage. I live in this same area as I enjoy star gazing and bird watching and walking in the wilderness. It is close to Madera Canyon where there are pine trees. The evenings always have a nice, gentle breeze and you can look forward to sunny, pristine skies that are some common in Arizona. I love the birdwatching from almost every window in the house.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
If you like to see the stars that are visible from the dark, clear skies of this area, this is the area for you. There are also a lot of wild life in the area and there is the faint sound of an occasional train in the valley below. The Tumaccari Mountains and Elephant Rock can been seen from this location and the sunsets and sunrises are superior. Tubac has a unique feel to it with rich culture of Spain, Mexico and Arizona and it has many fun and historical places. There is a festival of the lights Dec 4-6th and an art walk on that Friday. There is a new HD 32 inch Sony TV with Dish Satellite Service. There is another HD TV in the office!
