Our journey south was meant to be a temporary escape from the dark and rainy Canadian West Coast, in search of sunshine and warmth. After a brief search for a potential destination and keeping in mind that we desired nothing of an all inclusive resort, we quickly realized that one can have it all... in Costa Rica (Rich Coast)! As so many times before, we chose the off-beaten path...the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica was awaiting to be discovered! What a great surprise: not only did we get some rays and experienced the vibrant culture, but it all came with the most spectacular backdrop. The surroundings were magical! Lush green rain-forest filled with beautiful flowers, and wildlife otherwise only known to us from colourful atlases. There was a positive energy which we just could not get away from. After this first impression, a spark led to a dream and the dream became a plan...With the much appreciated help and support from our friends and families our new journey started at the end of 2009. We are delighted to be able to share our homes with our guests, and will assist as much as possible prior and during your trip to ensure a memorable experience.
Daniel or Jeff Mitroi Carlton purchased this house in 2009
We visited the Southern Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica for the first time just in 2009. Even before our vacation ended, we knew that we had just found a special place which would become our home one day. After relentlessly working on finding our dream home, we stumbled upon La Selvatica and literally fell in love at first sight. We are excited to share our home with you, open minded fellow travelers, and are convinced that you will soon discover your own reasons to love this place, and the reasons it was called 'The Coast of Utopia' by reputable travel journals. Happy travels!

Comfortable feeling of living in a home, not a cramped hotel room.
Exceptional, prompt travel planing assistance provided directly by the owners, from the initial contact with a potential guest.
The home was wonderful. We woke up to sloths in the trees just outside every morning. The kitchen is well equipped and the reading room is adorable. There are many fans throughout the home providing a great breeze. I would be happy living here. And the other Daniel that checked us in was a great help!

We loved staying literally in the jungle with a quaint grocery store at the end of the path leading out not to mention some excellent restaurants very close by. We woke up each morning with the Howler Monkeys and literally saw them in the trees as we had coffee. The location of Playa Chiquita is perfect as it is centrally located with five beaches to visit (Puerto Viejo, Playa Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva, and Manzanillo). I suggest to visit the Jaguar Center first and you will learn so much about the animals in the area. This turned out to be a relaxing, educational, and wonderful time for family bonding! I would suggest at least a week if not more. After traveling, we had five full days. We packed so much in those days that we were exhausted and in bed by 9:30. It was very nice to have comfortable beds and a secured home to be in at the end of those days. We will definately come back!
The hosts were incredibly friendly and helpful. However, the house was less than desirable. I do believe it would be a great place to stay if you just looking for a place to crash at night and didn't care about how nice it is.
We had no surprises everything was as mentioned in the write up on Home Away site. The caretaker very informative and very helpful. We ladies felt very safe the grocery store at the end of the lane was great. Market in Puerto Veijto was worth going to. The pizza restaurant chocolate and bread restaurant and the Jungle Spa all very good. People friendly. The beach near the lodge is the best very sandy and great to swim in. Bicycle is the only way to travel and very safe. Fabulous time recommend Daniel and Jeff very helpful prior to going. Strongly recommend taking the direct shuttle from airport to the house. All in all very impressed and pleased wonderful vacation. Thanks for everything would definitely recommend to others here in Ontario.
We (my husband and our son) spent amazing 2 weeks in this gem! The home is clean, with lots of character and very roomy but cozy at the same time. Most of the time we were at "home", we relaxed in the hammocks on the covered porch with the sounds of the jungle creatures all around us. The Frog Pond in the yard allowed us the opportunity to see and hear many frog species. Fireflies lit up the garden almost every night as well
During the day you could lay in the hammock and hear as well as see many different species of birds in the area.
Having the kitchen to allow us to cook/prep meals was great, especially with the produce truck coming by daily with all of the fresh fruit and vegetables. The grocery store ( a 3 minute walk) had everything we needed to compliment the produce for a great meal.
Any questions we had were answered by a very knowledgeable and friendly man named Rodrigo. He would stop in and check on us, almost daily, seeing if we needed or wanted anything.
The airlines had misplaced my luggage for 6 days and Rodrigo was helpful in giving us places to go shopping so I could get the items I needed. Dan and Jeff were helpful as well, offering to help me out back at home in Canada.
There is nothing negative to say about this experience we had with this portion of our vacation. Jeff and Dan made it SO easy!
Would we stay again... YES we would! In a New York minute!
Thanks so much for sharing your home with us!
We had a great stay at Casa La Selvetica. This was our first Eco vacation. We were at the cabin in mid February and it was exactly as described. It is a well appointed, well maintained bungalow built in the Playa Chiquita rainforest. The owners have done a good job of making you feel secure without insulating you from all of the sights, sounds and smells of the rainforest and there are unpopulated beaches within a 10 minute walk that rival those found throughout the Caribbean.
We were at the cabin for 8 nights and, for the most part, shared it with a troop of howler monkeys. We also saw sloths, an agouti, toucans, green parrots and 5 species of frogs plus more birds than we could identify. Many of these were spotted from our hammocks on the front porch.
We fell into a natural rhythm at Casa La Selvetica that we hadn’t found in other trips south. On some days the cost of enjoying the Howler Monkeys at 5:00 am was being asleep by 9 pm, but so be it!
The owners, Daniel and Jeff, were extremely helpful and patiently answered all of our questions. They provided advice on where to stay in San Jose and helped us arrange shuttles. There was also a cell phone at the cabin that included contacts for taxis, shuttles and medical clinics. We used the phone on a number of occasions and the only cost was a local phone card purchased for less than $5.
We worried about mosquitoes, but they were a non issue.
The Duonde Gourmet grocery store was within a 2 minute walk from the cabin and had everything we could possibly need at prices that were surprisingly reasonable and there are a number of restaurants within an easy walk.
Rodrigo was great. He was there to meet us on the first day and orient us to the property. It was nice having a local contact available to answer questions. One morning we locked ourselves out and he had to come to our rescue! He checked in every day and we really enjoyed his company.
While in Playa Chiquita we toured the Jaguar Rescue Center and went to the Chocolate Museum. We also went into the Puerto Viejo market on Saturday am and caught a local surfing competition. We had planned to take a guided hike through the Manzanillo National Park but it was rained out.
In general, we loved Costa Rica and will return. When we do we are hoping to stay at Casa La Selvetica for a longer stay next time. We would recommend it to anyone who is looking to slow things down and reconnect with nature.

Merci, merci beaucoup Rodrigo!
