Seasonal Rental, minimum 1 month

100 year old Amelia Island cottage with all modern amenities.

Smoke-Free, Non-smokers only.

Easy walking to historic downtown shopping, dining and fishing in Fernandina Beach and along the Amelia River. Or go down island to more resort dining and many golf courses.

Only, 2 miles from beautiful Atlantic Beaches. A great place for snowbirds, golfers, fishermen & nature lovers! This is our home away from home and we would like to share it with a few special people who love to enjoy great places with beaches, small town walking, lots of water for fishing and boating, golfing attractions and lots of history. We love Pirates!

Coquina Cottage is a classic cottage which was modernized a few years ago, well insulated over and under last year for those few cold days and many hot ones (AC works well). Last year we also gave her a full exterior paint job, scraping down to some beautiful wood, then covering it again colorfully. This year (2015) we did the inside, again with color. She is after all our beach village retreat.

This is the place to stay for a month or two. Invite the kids & grandkids and get the sand in your sandals, then lay back in the hammock and nap.

Our Coquina Cottage has all the old original wood floors and charm, but modern appliances - all electric, plumbing, central heat/air conditioning with new insulation . Fully furnished with a great screened porch, including hammock and wicker furniture. Master bedroom has queen bed, guest has twin day bed and pull up twin trundle. Both with private baths. Has washer/dryer and roll away bed for extra grandkids. Small fenced backyard for pets or may be indoor/outdoor (pet fee required). We have a small doggy/cat door. Pets must be on a monthly flea/tick preventive and approved by owners in advance.

If you're into gardening, go at it! We have a larger side yard and front garden. Our lawn/garden guy does the regular stuff, but we welcome any additions to the garden. Pick your rosemary & lavender from our large bushes and plant some basil. Watering the mint helps too.

Amelia Island has activities for any age or interest. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Amelia River, water sports are readily available - fishing (salt & fresh water - piers, beaches & charter boats), kayaking (rentals available), water tours of Amelia Island and Cumberland Island with their wild horses, water people ferry to St. Mary's, GA and the ferry boat to Cumberland Island. The beaches are white and beautiful and great for walking, swimming or shelling. Sea turtles nest here in their season (summer) too.

Old Fort Clinch State Park has walking and bicycling trails, old fort tours and reenactments as well as camping for your excess visitors.

Golf courses - several good ones on the island - see our local link for info. You can rent a golf cart on the next corner or bicycles just down the street.

Cultural activities are always available in our village - The Little Theater, movie theaters, street concerts, Island History Museum, Art Groups, Nature Groups etc. Dining out is affordable and delicious with an abundance of great, local restaurants geared to the varied tastes of Fernandina Beach's many visitors.

Walking is a favorite activity, whether in historic downtown (where Coquina Cottage is located), or on the Greenway which bisects a portion of the island or just out the town pier to watch our famous sunsets.

Saturday morning Farmer's Market and sidewalk sitting for coffee or limeade for people watching are also high on our list of fun.

Hammock napping and breakfast on the porch with backyard barbeques are good year around on Amelia Island.

About Gayla Schmitt

We live near New Orleans where Jim grew up, but Gayla is from Jacksonville. Fernandina Beach is where we always enjoyed vacationing, especially camping in Fort Clinch Park & shelling (sharks teeth hunting) on the beach. We love sailing, kayaking, biking & walking on the beach or in the greenway or to town for shopping or an ice cream cone. Coquina Cottage is our favorite vacation destination & our children enjoy it with their families also.

We do occasionally travel elsewhere and love hearing about where are guests come from.

Gayla Schmitt purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Gayla Schmitt chose Amelia Island

We chose Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island because Gayla had spent many 'beach days' there as a girl. Then we went together as our children got older. It was logical that we would like a cottage there to look forward to as a retiremant place some day. In the meantime, our renovated 100+ year old Coquina Cottage is too good to not share. The town also is so historic, inviting and friendly that it's ideal for visitors. We know you will feel as we do. Bring your grandkids - ours love it! Also, golfing and fishing are really good here, as well as just walking on the beach. If you're a birder, winter is the time for exciting shorebirds.

What makes this cottage unique

Whether you are a Golfer, Fisherman, Beachwalker or town shopper Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island has it all! Surrounded by a busy, historic fishing, shipping and tourist town, our neighborhood is quiet and serene. Sitting on the edge of the downtown historic area, from our cottage we can walk 5 very short blocks and be shopping, dining in fine local restaurants or even sitting in church. A brief bike ride or drive takes us to the beach, where we really enjoy shelling and boogie boarding. Walking & seeing our neighbors walking by is one of our favorite activities, too.

Then, Gayla spends a lot of time shark tooth hunting on the beach, plus we love all the waterbirds around Egan's Creek. Fort Clinch reenactments and night visits for star gazing are really special. Whether bicycling, walking or boating it seems there's a lot to do. Adventure Golf on Sadler is our Grandkids favorite activity

But bring a book or take one from our collection. Nothing compares with the hammock on our own screened porch.

Best Location to Feel Like a Local & to Explore Like aVisitor

  • 4 of 5

This felt more like home than anywhere we've ever stayed. It has everything you might need from a printer, envelopes and tape to bikes, helmets, and beach stuff. It even comes with its neighborhood cat (neutered and flea collared, of course). We loved walking to town and walking home from dinner under a beautiful starry sky. Everything else is a quick drive away. There is little traffic on the island, even at rush hour! Restaurants are all awesome. And Amy and Dillon who play at Alley Cat (and other island joints) are super talented musicians. Back to house...beds are comfy and both bathrooms are fine too. The kitchen has everything you need. Utensils are mismatched, as are towels, etc. But not a problem. TV, cell phones and internet worked great. There are some accommodations on the island where that is not the case. Favorite place to hang out was screened in porch with lots of comfy furniture, lots of neighborhood folks walking by and a hammock that stores away in a bag. Life is good at Coquina Cottage. Also sunny table and chairs in yard with grill, trees and fruit tree and azaleas. Only down side was that owner had already rented it for Feb next year without giving us the option of reserving it. Hope that we get back anyway and that some larger living room furniture is added. Owners are super nice and glad we got a chance to meet them. The 4 star rating reflects the "fanciness factor", but for the location and value, this is a 5 star place.

Owner's Response: Thanks, Deborah. We are looking for the perfect couch & chair for that room. We go for a beach feel. Towels are always bought on sets, but seem to ebb & flow like the tide, some arrive and some disappear. Sign of a relaxed island time. The Jan - Feb slot has been reserved for 2018 by repeat folks who do it way early. I guess they liked it too. Our March guests have come from Maine every year for many years. They've got the next 2 Marches and count on it. My suggestion is reserve early - Thanks for the good words. We'll try Alley Cat. Gayla

Comfortable Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Coquina Cottage is very comfortable to stay in and very convenient to the restaurants and shops in the downtown historical area. I enjoyed taking my dog for a walk in the morning to get coffee or a bagel at Aloha Bagel (highly recommended). Unfortunately the winter was a very cold one here so I didn't get to sit on the side porch and read very often but the couple of times I did in the evening it was great. Definitely a place I would feel comfortable renting again.

Feels like home

  • 5 of 5

Coquina Cottage is a lovely home obviously cared for by the owners . It's bright and colorful inside ........with everything one could need in the kitchen. There is a comprehensive binder with great information about the cottage and the area. Very helpful.

This cottage is in a friendly neighborhood within walking distance to restaurants, library, coffee shops, and the harbor. The owners promptly respond to any questions. I highly recommend it.

Best vrbo home we have stayed in!

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough wonderful things about the Coquina Cottage. First it is really a beautiful home with large rooms and that great screened in porch! Gayla has been very attentive to detail, even labeling the light switches, which is very helpful. This is a 100 year old house with a great feeling of comfort. My husband, who is the cook, loved the large kitchen with plenty of needed pots, pans, dishes, etc. Gayla was easily accessible to answer any needed questions and the neighbors are very friendly. Then there is the town and historic district of Fernandina Beach, which we LOVE! We already have our return scheduled! 5 Stars for sure!

Cozy, Adorable, Quiet.... Perfect!!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family was in the process of renovating a home and moving to Fernandina. We needed a place to stay during the renovation. Gayla and Jim (owners) couldn't have been more accommodating during our stay as we had several times where we needed to extend our stay due to renovations not being completed on schedule. The cottage is in the perfect location and we were able to walk everywhere we went. Downtown Fernandina has super cute shops, bars and restaurants which we walked to nearly every day. We rode bikes to Fort Clinch and the beach, visited the museum, took the boat tours that leave from the marina, saw plays at the local theater, etc. So many things to see and do and such a comfortable place to stay while we were enjoying them! I can't recommend this place enough. You will love it!

I was lucky enough to find this cozy hidden gem in Fernandina Beach, Florida. Walking distance to down town to all the wonderful restaurants, and to the live theater. Boat dockage and charter fishing about 5 or 6 blocks away, plus Brets waterfront restaurant. TV and internet worked flawlessly. Only wished there was a tv in the master bedroom. Local beaches are a short ride by bikes which are provided or about a 5 minutes car ride. I stayed with my small dog and cat which they were very happy and content the entire time in the cottage and on the screened porch. I walked the dog twice a day as they're are sidewalks on most streets. If you take the trolley tour you will appreciate those walks more as you will notice more of the local history. I did like that when I arrived the kitchen glass top table in the photos had been replaced with a wooden dining table, I think that was a plus.

The bathrooms were very very clean. I did not cook at the cottage as I ate out the entire time except for snacks. Although they're were many food spices and such that you would hardly have to buy much in that line of items. So I can't speak much on the kitchen, but the wine glasses were very nice and the dishwasher worked very well, as did the washer and dryer. I hope we will be able to stay here again in 2016.
