Lagoon Frontage - Cheap, economical and beautiful views

Bedrooms 2
Space 800 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 14 nights

About the property

House (up and down duplex), each suite is 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Placencia is a sleepy little village with an end of the road feel to it. Probably because it is at the end of the road. Ex pat's, locals and tourists mingle with a funky harmony. You'll feel safe everywhere in the village. Our family has been going to Placencia for 20 years and our kids roam with the other neighborhood kids with a comfy feeling of safety. We're in the heart of the village with local families and a few ex pats in the neighborhood. Local friends look after our house when we're not around. They live 100 meters away, their parents live across the road, three brothers down the lane.... you get the idea.

What you're getting when you stay at Casa Azul is a modest but clean accommodations in a super central area located in a beautiful setting on the lagoon. Everything (groceries, pharmacy, hardware and dozens of restaurants) is within a 5 minute walk. This is NOT a fancy vacation rental. You will be staying in a typical Belizian neighborhood. This means your neighbors will occasionally play their Bob Marley through the day.

Each room has a ceiling fan and there are two floor fans for spot cooling if the breeze drops off.

It is safe. Neither we or any of our guests have never had a problem with thefts or harassment on our property.

We recently upgraded the shorefront and put in a nice concrete sea wall and sandy and shady chill space where you can relax with a drink, fish, watch the sun set, etc.

The upstairs suite has a spacious veranda where you can chill, watch the boats travel by, and e

2018 UPGRADES: Both suites have new queen size beds with new pillowtop mattresses in the master bedrooms. Recently repainted inside and out with funky tropical colours. Upstairs suite boasts a new ceramic tile floor throughout, new mosaic tile countertops in kitchen and bath.

Many people use our home as a base for exploring Belize, others just want an economical place to chill out and experience Belize in a manner you can't when staying in a big resort or vacation home removed from the village.

If you're looking for a Cancun-esque type of experience, Placencia (and our rental) is not for you. Come here to chill, relax, do a few day trips, snorkel, beach it, etc.

Food is cheap if you eat Belizean and you could probably eat out 3 great meals a day for $20 US per day.

About The Owner

We're a Canadian family who aspires to avoid the cold winters by spending time in beautiful Belize. In the interim, Belizean friends of ours help us by managing the property on our behalf.

The Owner purchased this house in 2008

Why The Owner chose Placencia

We love Belize, especially Placencia. The tourism here is more a backpacker and expat kind of crowd. The people from the big resorts wander into town on their golf carts but tend to wander back just as quickly. It's English speaking, beautiful weather, friendly people, great food. What more could you ask for

What makes this house unique

By far the best feature of property is the outdoor living space. The balcony and lower patio provide a cool place to chill with a stunning view of the lagoon.

Stay Far Away

  • 1 of 5

I'll start by saying I've never had to write a review like this for anywhere we have stayed, not even close. We (me, my husband and 12 year old) chose to stay here because of the reasonable pricing and the recent good reviews. This place is a classic example of why there should be truth in advertising; it's imperative that people know what they're in for, especially if there's a no refund policy in place.

When we arrived it was clear that the house had not been cleaned in some time with layers of thick dirt and dust, and was left in a disarray by the previous tenants. We found used sundries, razors, food items, etc. strewn about the apartment, and our bed was unmade. When we tried to make it the bed collapsed and had to be repaired by a handyman. The toilet was murky and black with some kind of growth, and the entire home smelled of strong, stale urine.

We had to clean the home ourselves, and we're quite shocked to find the commode was actually white. The stale and horrible urine smell never quite went away during our almost one month stay, despite multiple disinfections. The house was unbearably hot during the day, with 2 rickety fans provided. It was impossible to get any relief, and we were basically immobilized between 11am and 5pm if we were at the apartment.

The bed mattresses were soft and worn, the linen was a joke, raggedy, threadbare and very old. We had to buy our own pots and pans to have decent cookware. Furniture was pretty filthy. The duplex is in an alley, and there are very large mounds of piled high garbage outside. It looked like they've been there for years and are quite disgusting. People actually walk down the alley to dump trash and litter. The immediate neighbors have no problem blasting their music at top volume all hours of the day, which made it impossible to read, watch tv, talk, or even think. We have been to many beach spots, but this is the first time we were practically eaten alive by bugs; they were so horribly itchy, and we couldn't discern if it was an outside problem or an inside one.

This was the worst month we've ever experienced; we even left a few days early. I would imagine it was equivalent to living in a human version of a toilet. The owner claims that it's a humble place in town among the natives, but at some point he has to be accountable and responsible for the terrible and disheartening con he is letting trusting and unknowing travelers into. At least I am able to correct this in some measure.

Owner's Response: I took some time to put a response to this review because I wanted to speak to the guests who were in our house before and after “Anonymous”. I was very upset and surprised about this review given the fact that my wife and I were in our house 4 weeks before. Essentially there is a lot of hyperbole and untruth in this review. They checked in on May 15 and we heard nothing until May 19th, 4 days after they moved in. They said that the place hadn’t been cleaned and that they had to do a lot of cleaning themselves. Also mentioned that a bed was broken and a toilet mechanical issue (both fixed the next day). I was obviously very dismayed to hear all this. I was very responsive to all their concerns with immediate actions and communications to try and sort it out. They seemed happy after the remedial efforts. Our house is not fancy but we do to try and make sure that it is very clean when guests move in. I’ve traveled around half the world and the only time I have an issue with accommodations is when it’s not clean so we take this seriously. To comment on some of the specific issues raised: Condiments (butter, salt, ketchup, cooking oil) are typically not removed when a guest move out as a courtesy for the next guest. THE HEAT: Our house is not advertised with AC. There are 4 ceiling fans and 2 floor fans in the suite as shown in the listing photos. Its the Tropics. THE MUSIC: The house is in the middle of a local neighborhood. It’s part of living in the village and the culture here. The music always goes off at dark and never continues into the evening. THE CLEANLINESS?: I really can’t speak to the actual condition when Anonymous moved in because I wasn’t there but I have a hard time believing the “commode” deteriorated so significantly and dust accumulated so thick in the 4 weeks after we left. The suite was, and is not, a “human toilet” and sorry, but I’m offended by this ridiculous statement. BEDS/KITCHENWARE: The mattresses are less than 2 years old and not soft/worn. Linen is not new but certainly not raggedy or threadbare. Pots and pans are basic but fully functional. I don’t see how there are any misrepresentations about our house in our VRBO ad. The guests before and after Anon were happy with their stays and have asked about rebooking. I feel they were expecting far more from a rental FOR WHICH THEY PAID $30/DAY. The other reviews speak for themselves and every once in a while you get a guest who has unrealistic expectations.

Blue lagoon

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the blue lagoon house for 3 months this winter and truly enjoyed our stay there. Nice being so close to the villiage and the house was comfortable, would definitely like to stay there again.

Wonderful month in the sun!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 3rd trip to the blue house on the lagoon in Placencia Village. First 2 were 2 weeks each. This trip decided deserved a month. House is centrally located - can walk almost every where. Joe, Egbert, and Judith are very accommodating. If there are any issues, contact one them and things are handled very quickly. House is basically full equipped. Kitchen has what you need for cooking in or grilling on the patio. Bedrooms are comfortable, full bath with hot water showers, washing machine so you don't have to take the closet. Location is ideal that you don't need air, but there is a fan in every room that keeps it very comfortable. Stayed for one month. We are home and already sorry we didn't stay for two. But we WILL be BACk!

This was a great choice

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. We stayed here for 2 weeks. The price was very reasonable, everything was nice and clean and the area was very convenient to everything that Placencia has to offer. The location on the lagoon was very nice. The house had everything we needed to cook our own meals at home when we wanted. We stayed in the downstairs unit. The neighbors upstairs were very nice. This is a great choice if you are looking for a clean, quiet, economical option for a great stay in Placencia.

Kayak the lagoon looking for egrets, storks, alligators, fish off the sea wall and catch a few black snapper for dinner, go for a dip in the lagoon, watch the sunset behind the Maya mountains over the water
