Why Monette Thorrez chose Gaylord

Opal Lake is just south of Gaylord and within a three hour drive of most of Southeast Michigan. Gaylord is still like a small town in many ways, but large enough to offer restaurants, shops, movies and other conveniences within a few minutes of the lake. Gaylord is centrally located and many Northern Michigan Highlights are within an hour of Tattrie's Cottage. As well, some of the nations prime fly fishing is found in the Au Sable and other rivers head-watered in Otsego County.

What makes this cottage unique

This is a lakefront cabin, so the lake is the prime focus. The lake is small enough and remote enough to maintain that Up North atmosphere and yet large enough to enjoy boating, skiing and all water sports. Peace and quiet in God's Country: Northern Michigan. Life on Opal Lake is good.

Always a great time

  • 5 of 5

We have rented Tattrie's cottage a number of times over the years. We have never had anything close to a bad experience on any of our vacations. I think this was our 4th time renting and we plan to return every year. Opal lake is northern Michigan's best kept secret and Tattries cottage is the perfect place to enjoy the area. The cottage is always clean, sleeps plenty and has everything you could want. Some people enjoy the out of state escape vacation. I personally love driving a couple hours and having my vacation start when I walk in the door. If you are expecting a 5 star resort with pool attendants and maids, room service etc, this is not the place for you. It is a cottage, a cute perfect cottage in an great location. I have been coming to Opal lake since I was a child, I dreamed of retiring or living on this lake when I grew up. Tattries gives me the opportunity to live that dream every year I visit. My wife and kids have fallen in love as I did. See you next year.

GREAT PLACE TO STAY!

  • 4 of 5

We very much enjoyed our week long stay at Tattrie's Cottage. There is nothing wrong with the bathroom. It is a small, single shower, but it has a curtain rather than a door, so there is elbow room, although the shower head is low for taller people. The bathroom itself is plenty big. Everything that you could possibly want was supplied. The charcoal grill is a nice big grill. Although there is no air conditioning, there are fans in every room. Still, it is rustic, which is not for everyone, but we found it to be charming. The water was nice and boat traffic was to a minimum. The kids loved jumping off the end of the dock, which is shallow. We also enjoyed the canoe and fishing boat, as well as the sunsets. Nice that they also had plenty of chairs for around the campfire.

Wonderful family memories !

  • 5 of 5

Our whole family including daughter , son-law & now 2 grandchildren , vacationed at this cottage for 4 summers & LOVED IT ! The lake is beautiful , so quiet & peaceful . Everything you want for an "UP NORTH COTTAGE " .

And YES .... It is rustic ! That is the charm ! Nobody loves "CUSHY " more than myself , but the serenity you get from this place is a great MIND CLEANSE for a week !

We are very sad that we won't be able to come back yr after yr . Our family DOG situation has grown due to my daughters family also getting one & I was not aware of the 2 dog MAX & aug of 2013 we brought more than allowed .

This place will always be one of my top memories , my grandson was 4 months with our first visit .

The owners are wonderful & right next door , if you have a problem . We always felt guilty that we didn't sign the "visitors book " to let them know how nice it was . Because you cannot go wrong with this cottage if you like it peaceful & WE DO !

Maybe one day just my husband & I can have a little get away of just our own !

past rentee

The cottage is very rustic inside. All of the charm is in the cottage's side lot and water front access. If the weather is great, your vacation will be good. We found the shower to be small, so if you're over 150 lbs. it will be a tight squeeze. If you like to cook, bring your own pots and pans, as the quality and selection are poor. Some plus' are: ample towels: free wi-fi; dish TV; use of row boat and canoe.

Owner's Response: Monette and I are disappointed that our guests did not have a totally enjoyable visit to Tattrie’s Cottage. Most of our guests thoroughly enjoy the cottage, the lake and surroundings as the other reviews exemplify. As far as the “rustic” comment, I guess it boils-down to expectations. The pictures on VRBO give a true representation of the cottage, but it is a cottage: a Summer Cottage. It is not a house with wall-to-wall carpeting. Tattrie’s Cottage is a well maintained, clean cottage on a large, wooded lot on the most beautiful lake in Otsego County. But by the very nature of it being a cottage I guess you could consider it “rustic”. The décor is not modern, some of the floors are bare and painted, everything doesn’t match (pots and pans included) and it’s not perfectly themed; it’s a Summer Cottage. As for the cottage having a “small shower”, this is true. We re-did the bathroom in 2012 and put in a new fiberglass shower stall, but there was only so much room to work with. In order to make the shower larger we would have had to added-on to the house. This would have been at a significant expense and driven the weekly rent up by a hundred dollars or more defeating our goal of providing a great value family vacation opportunity. So while the shower is small, it’s adequate and anyone can take a shower in it – I have and I weigh 180! It comes down to expectations, Tattrie’s is a great cottage, an excellent value, on a wonderful lake with a tremendous view, but it’s not a house or a villa. p.s. we’re planning on upgrading pots and pan and the TV for 2014.

Best vacation ever!

  • 5 of 5

My family recently stayed at Tatterie's cottage, it was by fat one of the best vacations we have ever had! We are very familiar with the Gaylord area and Opal Lake as well which was the main reason we chose to stay there and yet again we were not disappointed! The cottage is very well maintained and decorated with such charm it definitely adds to the while experience. We are a large family there was two adults and six children (ranging in ages from 3 to 17) and there was plenty of room for us all with some extra to spare. There was something for everyone to do as well between all the board games the kids played at night to the row boat they used to fish with, we were never bored. The view from the back porch was amazing sunrise to sunset, I took some fabulous pictures! Opal Lake is so pristine and beautiful, it's clean and just big enough to have fun on without worrying about the older kids going too far away. The owners were SO very welcoming and friendly they made us feel right at home, they were also extremely helpful if we needed anything. We can't wait to go back again! Another great thing about the cottage is your only a short drive away from anything and everything you may need including great restaurants . We also went horseback riding and go carting, Gaylord really is a fantastic place, and Tatterie's cottage is the icing on the cake!

Wonderful Time, Charming Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Had a great time at this charming cottage. We golfed at Michaywe, Black Forest, and the Otsego Club. All within a very short drive. The cottage is cozy, has everything you'd need - nice bonus is that the owner provided towels! Owner was quick to communicate, attentive, and the price is very reasonable for the area. Each bedroom has its own fan, as well as the living room, and every day there was a nice breeze off the lake. Even though daytime highs were in the low to mid 80's, we were never uncomfortable without AC. It helps that the cottage is nicely shaded with mature trees, and, coupled with the cool breeze from the lake, you'll be sure to have a great "up north" experience. The grounds are nice as well, with the cottage perched above the lake, its a beautiful view - had great sunsets. The swimming area is huge and sandy, with a shallow drop off. The cottage also has a nice outside area with picnic table and fire pit, plenty of firewood provided. Lastly, the bed in the covered porch is the most sought after sleeping spot, very comfortable with the breeze, light waves hitting the shore, and crickets chirping. Also, there is a bed in the living room area - nice to have the extra sleeping space. We had all the conveniences we needed, and will definitely be looking to stay again for our next golf trip. Thanks again Monette.
