About this property
The Southside Pennhouse
Welcome to the Pennhouse! This spacious 2 story home has been updated with a modern and relaxed interior to enhance its historic charm. The open concept main level is well stocked and features a cozy nook off of the kitchen. Both large bedrooms upstairs feature 4k TVs. Located around the corner from Cherokee Street and all of its unique shops and restaurants, this area is the vibe of south city. The location is also very convenient to downtown and major highways.
The open concept first floor features 10ft ceilings and refinished antique pine floors. The large living room connects to the eat in kitchen. Off of the kitchen is the bathroom and cozy reading or sleeping nook. Both huge bedrooms are upstairs with the same cozy pine flooring and tall ceilings. Bedroom 1: king bed with a 60" 4K TV. Bedroom 2: queen bed with a 50" 4K TV. The fenced in backyard has a fire pit and chairs.
I look forward to giving insight into all the area has to offer, or can be as hands off as you please. I enjoy interacting and learning from others.
Benton Park West is an eclectic and diverse urban neighborhood that has transformed into a thriving arts district. Cherokee St is the anchor street and hosts a bustling business district free of national chains. Housing in this neighborhood dates back to the civil war era and much of it has been recently updated or rehabbed. There is a mix of new and long lasting residents. For all of these reasons I like to call this area the vibe of South St. Louis. In this area you will find trendy resale shops, art studios, cannabis establishments, breweries, and the most authentic Mexican cuisine in St. Louis.
The neighborhood, especially Cherokee Street, is very walkable. Please exercise caution after dark. Parking is generally on the street in the city. Most residential districts have free street parking but some business districts have paid meters. For public transit, Metrobus runs consistently to all pockets of the city. The metrolink train is nice when traveling along the central corridor.
- No parties or events
- No extra guests
- Clean up after yourself
- Keep the exterior doors locked at all times
- Take the trash out to the dumpster in the alley

About the host
Hosted by John Fuglsang
Hi! I am a born and raised St. Louisan who loves traveling, working, and helping others. I have a passion for people, business, and design, and being a host gives me the opportunity to impact people's lives and show them new things! Some of my hobbies are skiing, brewing, adventure, cooking, and construction projects.
Why they chose this property
Benton Park West neighborhood offers the following attributes which I find appealing:
- Has a very small town main street feel. Cherokee business district is free of national chains
- Well preserved architecturally significant infrastructure
- Neighborhood Synergy: residents and businesses work together well despite differences in race, politics, origin, etc.
- The first retail cannabis store and cannabis lounge in STL opened here
- Interesting mix of people that are generally hardworking, accepting, and have unique stories to tell
- Not as expensive as some other neighborhoods with similar attributes

What makes this property unique
Two things:
1. Guest Convenience: Outlets and power strips are placed at arms length in most areas of the house. Essential oils, coffee, and unique amenities are provided.
2. The spirit of this neighborhood was integrated into this house renovation. Repurposing materials already onsite was prioritized over new, even at greater cost. Natural and local materials were used whenever possible. The highest quality furniture and decor was sourced, all coming from within a 10 mile radius of the house.
