About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 7)

Built in the early 1900’s our cabin was once the home of Fred Harman, the late author of the Red Ryder comic books. It is therefore known as the Red Ryder cabin. Nestled in it’s own private cove with nothing but national forest behind it, the cabin has a wonderfully remote feel to it while still being easily accessible to both Wolf Creek ski area and to the town of Pagosa Springs. It is the picture of a quaint little cabin in the woods. When my brother Robert and I (I’m Zac) were looking for a place to buy we wanted something that had character and that is what we found in this little cabin. People who have stayed there have often commented on a kind of magical quality about the place. I know first hand that it somehow promotes really sound sleep – especially if there is rain falling on the metal roof. The interior is unique and cozy. In the main room we just installed a hickory floor and a new heater which just adds to the charm and coziness. Too, we have just completed remodeling the bedrooms and both bathrooms. New carpet, some new drywall and paint in the bedrooms, tiled floor in one of the bathrooms with in floor heat and a new shower make the place that much nicer. There is a wood burning stove and a little nook of a loft that kids always seem to like. Just outside the front door is a covered porch with a wood swing that looks down the road to a view of Saddle Mountain in the background. Attached to the porch is a large deck that is nice for eating outside or catching some sun. Behind the cabin is just national forest so it is not uncommon to see an assortment of wildlife. There is a hiking trail (or a cross country ski trial) that begins right out the back door.

Just a skip down the road are our neighbors Jeff and Jan who help us look after the place. They are really nice people and can help with anything that is needed, or just provide advice on places to eat or cool things to do. So we hope you come. Rob and I have put a lot of love into the cabin and we hope that everyone who comes and stays will be able to feel that love.

About Robert Schmidt

Rob and I are brothers who have a zest for life. We grew up in a musical family and still play music together throughout Colorado. We even took a couple of tours through Europe, playing on the streets and pubs. We both love the outdoors and relish in the finer things of life such as friendships and family, good stories, good food and drink, and time to hang out and play.

Robert Schmidt purchased this cabin in 1998

Why Robert Schmidt chose San Juan River Village

In 1998 Rob and I took a trip through the central and south mountains of colorado on a quest to find a place that we could get away to. I remember the first time coming down Wolf Creek pass and stopping at the scenic overlook and thinking that it was one of the most beautiful valleys I had ever seen. We had traveled all through the rockies but when we stumbled onto the cabin we knew this was the place. There was just something about the way it looked that really grabbed us. Then it is close to Wolf Creek and skiing, it is surrounded by national forest and close to town. It really is an ideal location all around.

What makes this cabin unique

The location is amazing. It's right in between the ski area and Pagosa springs. Also, it is unique in that you can ski or hike into 100,000,000 acres of wilderness right out the back door.

Very nice cabin

  • 4 of 5

Really enjoyed our stay. Cabin is in a quiet secluded area but not too far off the main road. Clean comfortable and well stocked with generous sleeping accommodations. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is the lack of cell coverage or WiFi which says more about me missing the point of vacationing in a cabin.

Perfectly situated between ski/sledding and Pagosa Springs!

  • 5 of 5

We just loved this rustic cabin! The location was perfect with access to hiking right out the back door. It was at the end of a dead-end road so there are neighbors, but you can’t see them from the cabin—it felt secluded, but was close to amenities and SO beautiful! So many thoughtful touches including games and movies, toiletries, stacked firewood, laundry and dishwasher soap ... the owners really thought of everything. We (mostly) enjoyed the lack of cell service/wifi (we were able to get a signal at the end of the driveway). With 3 teenagers, it was nice to have an “unplugged” week making memories.

A real gem in a rustic private setting

  • 5 of 5

Second time to stay in the Red Ryder cabin and couldn't have been more pleased! New bathroom/shower with heated floor is a very nice improvement. And don't recall the room heaters last time, very handy indeed. Manager of property went out of his way to accommodate us last minute, with little to no advance notice, and that was greatly appreciated. With West Fork of the San Juan just 4 miles to the east, fishing is always easy and close by. And only a couple more miles to take the wife shopping and mineral baths time. Very quiet and peaceful setting with amenities to cook our own meals, even my rib-eyes on the supplied BBQ off the back porch. And while satellite/cable tv is not available, we did occasionally get enough signal for texts. (verizon) But for us, that is part of the attraction, as we'd prefer to get away from some of that. Extremely nice/clean "neighborhood" the cabin is situated in, and even noticed county law, hopefully just doing his normal rounds. Nice to know someone might come help if the bear raids the trash can like last year, but doesn't want to go away. And fair warning if you bring a Miniature Schnauzer...chipmunks will tease/taunt and generally run your 4 legger ragged. (cabin is up against a national forest) Cool breezes coming down the mountainside at night, make it easy to open a bedroom window and cool the room for sleeping, even in the warm months. After 2 stays in consecutive years, we have to say we do not find anything we do not like about this place, and now consider it a wonderful "home away from home" in colorful CO! Thanks Robert! Just what we needed

  • 4 of 5

Rustic and secluded. Perfect. The only drawbacks are an unfinished feel to the back porch and hot tub (?), and a little one-inch "step" between the main room and hallway that catches a toe or two until you get used to it. All good, and Robert was very helpful.

Close to civilization but feels far away

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in the Red Ryder cabin. More than anything, we loved the charm of the wood cabin. The kids loved the loft and running around outside. The kitchen is fully stocked with equipment and there's a fire pit outside where we had marshmallows. The short hike out the back door was perfect for us and our small kids (7 and 4), but there were other gorgeous hikes we went on in the area as well. Great cabin and location!
