About the host
Your host
We are an Xennial married couple, Rich and Emily. Rich is a civil servant and Emily is a digital librarian. We enjoy travel, trivia, coffee, parks, PBS, streaming television, music, and dinner parties. We come to St. Louis by way of Louisville and a bunch of other U.S. towns. We live with our three adorable and energetic children in a house very close to where you'll be staying.
Rich got his start hosting when he used to rent his apartment out for the Kentucky Derby. Shortly after, in 2007, he joined couchsurfing.org, and started hosting guests from around the world, for free. Although we didn't have the opportunity to travel as much as we would like, hosting guests in our home (later through Airbnb) has been a wonderful way for the world to come to us. With kids, we switched to hosting a whole apartment in our two-family home and, two kids later, hosting guests at both apartments in that house while living nearby. We've learned a lot about providing a comfortable and welcoming experience for our guests over the last 16 years, and we continue to learn more. Our future goal, post-retirement, is to run an inn or two--six months of the year someplace pleasantly warm and six months of the year someplace with cool summers.

Why they chose this property
Our neighborhood, Skinker-Debaliviere, was built shortly after the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, just North of the former fairgrounds (now Forest Park). It has single-family and multi-family houses from the early 1900s as well as a few newer modern infill homes. We are immediately South of the Delmar Loop, an exciting nightlife and entertainment district recently named one of the Ten Best Streets in America. We are also walking distance from Washington University in St. Louis, and chose the neighborhood because Emily works there.
This area is walkable, dense, near public transit, and home to a variety
of people. We can walk to the public library, a movie theater, a small international grocery store (United Provisions on Delmar), and a host of restaurants and shops. We can ride our bikes to Forest Park or Washington University. We can take the MetroLink downtown. Or we can hop in our car and be on the highway in minutes.

What makes this property unique
This large but cozy apartment takes up the entire bottom floor of our two-family home in a family-friendly residential neighborhood. Private separate entrance from the front porch. Free street parking. Owners live nearby.
We have two bedrooms, one bathroom with tub and shower, good central heat and AC, a full kitchen, dining room for 6 with work area and desk, living/TV room with an additional fold-out full size couch bed, friendly front porch, and sunny and well-furnished backyard porch and patio to which guests have full access. Kitchen includes all appliances including coffee maker, blender/food processor, toaster and dishwasher. Fully equipped for cooking. We have free, shared basement washing machines and dryers, as well as an iron and ironing board. Wifi is fast and typically steady, shared throughout the entire house.
We try to provide a comfortable, homey experience for our guests. Linens and towels are new, and replaced on an annual basis. Mattresses are new or virtually so and include a Casper memory foam mattress on the queen bed and hotel-quality conventional spring mattresses on the two extra-long twin beds. We use silk fill for our quilts in the summer, and cozy down fill in the winter. The space is good for singles, couples, families, and other groups. We welcome all (but please don't smoke).
Our 43" Roku TV includes subscriptions to a number of channels, currently including Netflix, Disney+, Paramount+, and Peacock, as well as more than 20 local, over-the-air stations. We have smart speakers (Amazon Echo) in every room for guest use (can also be unplugged if you prefer), including an Echo Studio with 3D audio, and attached record player. Please check the stereo cabinet for more albums than just the ones we leave out on shelves.
