New: We accept payment by check, PayPal, and cashier's check in addition to credit card payment through VRBO/Homeaway. Additionally, we have recently added WiFi, a TV, a DVD player and a small DVD library and updated the master bath. There is new outdoor furniture for visiting and relaxing.

What makes McGonagill House different? It is one of the largest vacation rentals in Marathon and includes a very large lawn that is surrounded by mature pecan trees. Additionally, the home was built as a 'town house' for a local ranching family and constructed with native rock from the family ranch, the Apple Ranch, in the nearby Glass Mountains. Completed in the 1940s, it includes 'Victory V's' in the exterior rock faces, intended to memorialize the Allied victory during WWII. The McGonagill's son, Eldon, was a medic on active duty in the Pacific Theatre at the time. The rental property includes the bottom floor of the house (3br/2b), the large yard, and parking in the roomy driveway.

This home is a quaint mixture of original furnishings along with updated bathrooms and a full kitchen. Porches on the front of the home allow visitors to relax and enjoy those great, wide-open West Texas skies. We put up hummingbird feeders during hummer season. Birders welcome! (Ask about our AARP discount.) All furnishings can be moved to accommodate the guests preferences. If custom locations for furniture are requested prior to arrival we will accommodate those requests.

A short stroll will take you to the heart of Marathon where you can enjoy breakfast or lunch at the Oasis, the V6, or Big Bend Pizza. Heading down the street, enjoy shopping a San Rosendo Crossing, or one of the numerous art galleries and small gift shops/boutiques. You may enjoy an evening drink at the White Buffalo Bar.

Above all, Marathon is a place to unwind and relax. Leave your worries at the county line, grab a massage at the spa, or sit outside at and engage in conversation with the locals. It's all good in Marathon.

About Janet Groth

We are the great-grandchildren of the original owner and builders JA and Maggie McGonagill and ate many Sunday 'after church' meals here with family and friends. We walked to the French Grocery store and charged candy bars and cokes to our parents after school when we were kids. We played games in the yard. This home and this town are dear to our hearts and an integral part of our family history.

Why Janet Groth chose Marathon

This home has been in my family for four generations. Although we don't live in the area, we love Marathon for its one-of-a-kind atmosphere and visit several times a year. We support the Marathon Baptist Church and enjoy meals at the restaurants in Marathon. The Fourth of July Dance at the Post, local roping and horsemanship events, and nostalgia call us back to Marathon numerous times every year.

A great stay in an historic home

We were heading back to Houston from Big Bend and wanted to break up the trip with a stay in Marathon. 5 adults had plenty of space and great beds. We enjoyed reading about the history of the home. Thanks!

Just what we were looking for!

The McGonagill House in Marathon was the perfect find for our motorcycle trip out through West Texas and onto Big Bend. The location, amenities, cleanliness, comfort, and overall atmosphere of the house were outstanding! Also, Janet is an incredible host--clearly communicating with us from start to finish! Should we find ourselves out that way again, we'll definitely book the house again!

Beautiful, spacious home

This is a great house located right off the highway but has the feeling of seclusion that people are looking for when traveling out west. House was fully stocked with everything we needed including a coffee machine. We were surprised with the amount of space this house has. Nice patios and huge yard! Close to everything the town has to offer. Perfect for day trips to Big Bend or surrounding towns. The owner Janet responded quickly to all questions. We’ll be back soon!

Thank you Janet for the hospitality & the use of the McGonagill House. We had a great time & enjoyed our time around the kitchen table in the mornings with coffee & evenings playing cards games. The beds were very comfortable & sheets especially soft, which made for a restful night. We appreciated having the ceiling fans in the bedrooms, for those of us that are used to them @ our own homes. The water for showers was hot and we had ample room in the bathrooms, to get ready in the morning. Even though the train went by during the night it was muffled enough to not disturb our sleep.

We enjoyed our breakfast @ Pennys in Alpine but especially the dinner we had @ the Gage Hotel. The food was outstanding & the atmosphere was well beyond what we expected. Marathon is a very unique, quaint little town & has more character than you would think a West Texas town would have. Everybody was very friendly and treated us as family.

I would recommend this house to girls for a girls trip or families to use for their get aways.

It has plenty of room for individual space but yet allows everyone to come together for meals & games. We look forward to coming back for our next West Texas Excursion. Thanks again.
