Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-6)

New: We accept payment by check, PayPal, and cashier's check in addition to credit card payment through VRBO/Homeaway. Additionally, we have recently added WiFi, a TV, a DVD player and a small DVD library and updated the master bath. There is new outdoor furniture for visiting and relaxing.

What makes McGonagill House different? It is one of the largest vacation rentals in Marathon and includes a very large lawn that is surrounded by mature pecan trees. Additionally, the home was built as a 'town house' for a local ranching family and constructed with native rock from the family ranch, the Apple Ranch, in the nearby Glass Mountains. Completed in the 1940s, it includes 'Victory V's' in the exterior rock faces, intended to memorialize the Allied victory during WWII. The McGonagill's son, Eldon, was a medic on active duty in the Pacific Theatre at the time. The rental property includes the bottom floor of the house (3br/2b), the large yard, and parking in the roomy driveway.

This home is a quaint mixture of original furnishings along with updated bathrooms and a full kitchen. Porches on the front of the home allow visitors to relax and enjoy those great, wide-open West Texas skies. We put up hummingbird feeders during hummer season. Birders welcome! (Ask about our AARP discount.) All furnishings can be moved to accommodate the guests preferences. If custom locations for furniture are requested prior to arrival we will accommodate those requests.

A short stroll will take you to the heart of Marathon where you can enjoy breakfast or lunch at the Oasis, the V6, or Big Bend Pizza. Heading down the street, enjoy shopping a San Rosendo Crossing, or one of the numerous art galleries and small gift shops/boutiques. You may enjoy an evening drink at the White Buffalo Bar.

Above all, Marathon is a place to unwind and relax. Leave your worries at the county line, grab a massage at the spa, or sit outside at and engage in conversation with the locals. It's all good in Marathon.

About Janet Groth

We are the great-grandchildren of the original owner and builders JA and Maggie McGonagill and ate many Sunday 'after church' meals here with family and friends. We walked to the French Grocery store and charged candy bars and cokes to our parents after school when we were kids. We played games in the yard. This home and this town are dear to our hearts and an integral part of our family history.

Janet Groth purchased this house in 1940

Why Janet Groth chose Big Bend Country

This home has been in my family for four generations. Although we don't live in the area, we love Marathon for its one-of-a-kind atmosphere and visit several times a year. We support the Marathon Baptist Church and enjoy meals at the restaurants in Marathon. The Fourth of July Dance at the Post, local roping and horsemanship events, and nostalgia call us back to Marathon numerous times every year.

What makes this house unique

Short walk to downtown Marathon; tranquility and large parking area; family ties to Marathon; read about our ranching family and how and why the house was constructed in Marathon.

Great location, beautiful property!

  • 5 of 5

This was our fourth stay (maybe 5th?) at the McGonagill House and obviously we LOVE it! The home is very clean, cozy and the a/c is cold! (Important for summer temps in TX) We go here to relax and recharge the batteries. The stress of work melts away sitting among the pecan trees in the large backyard, enjoying the cool breeze and viewing the stars at night lying on a blanket. Perfect place for couples and families. We went with another couple and each had our private space; we never felt confined at all. The living room was the perfect place for early risers to sip coffee and read a book while others sat on the front porch or at the kitchen table. The house was super clean, had everything you would need including a washer and dryer. The bedrooms (3) each had a ceiling fan and the beds were extremely comfortable. The charcoal grill out back was large enough for a whole chicken and sausages. The local French Grocer has all immediate essentials including a decent beer/wine selection. Alpine is the next largest town (approx 30 miles) with a full grocery store, hardware shop, antiques, etc. McGonagill is a great location for those wanting to visit Marathon, Big Bend, Marfa and Alpine. Marathon has a beautiful park (Post Park) for picnics and Gage Gardens across the street from the house where we enjoyed taking morning walks along the 2 mile trail.

These are the essentials we brought along: food & beverages, charcoal & lighter fluid, camping/folding chairs, outdoor blanket, radio/bluetooth speaker. Be assured, the house is stocked FULL of linens, paper products, kitchenware/cookware, spices, home cleaning essentials, shampoo, bath/hand soap and trash bags.

Janet is an excellent host and made sure every aspect of our stay exceeded expectations. We love Marathon and the historic McGonagill House! See you next year!

Great place to stay when visiting Big Bend Natl Park

  • 5 of 5

Had a great trip and enjoyed the house--wasn't too far away from places we wanted to visit like Big Bend Natl Park, the McDonald Observatory, etc. Beds were very comfortable and Janet was a pleasure to work with. Only recommendation I would give homeowners would be to add a picnic table outside so guests could have meals out in the yard. Would stay there again if we go back to that area.

Lovely old house in great location.

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house for two nights for our daughter's wedding. There were tons of people in and out during the time we were there. The house is large enough for two large families. There is a large backyard which makes the accommodations seem even larger. The weather was nice so all of our meals were taken outdoors. Everything we needed was there. It's a great place.
