About William Dodge
We purchased the property, in a very run-down condition, in 2005 while on vacation here in Pieve di Compito...it was love at first sight...although it took a bit of imagination to see through the dirt and grime, visualizing a potential dream home. After 2 years of restoration, and many trips to Italy from our home in Hawaii to oversee the restoration, the villa was finally finished. Now we would like to share this beautiful village home and garden with you.
William Dodge purchased this Villa in 2007
Why William Dodge chose Pieve di Compito
We investigated several hilltop, islolated properties when we were thinking of coming to Italy...lovely classic views...but lonely. We wanted to be where there was some life, maybe a few neighbors, within walking distance to a restaurant or 2...and so found 'Il Rifugio', part of an old grouping of buildings which once served pilgrims going to Rome.
What makes this Villa unique
The location is prime...and living here has enforced that opinion for us. We are close to many visitor attractions and yet away from the hustle and bustle...this little valley is perfectly situated, with a microclimate that allows roses (my obsession) to bloom in December, and my Spring bulbs to pop out in February...with just a bit of chilly weather. A gardener's delight!

We could not have been happier during our stay at the home of Bill and John.
We were warmly greeted by both Bill and John. Their landscaping is beautifully decorated, and the colors and smells enlivened our already excited senses! The house was immaculate, and we were delighted to have our own sleeping areas. Bill and John gave us much information about the surrounding areas, and possibilities of places to visit, as well as excellent directions. We were always greeted in the morning with smiling faces and a good hot cup of coffee or tea. We then proceeded into the dining area and had the best croissants we have ever had as well as yogurt and the specialty pastry of the day, and fresh fruit. We truly felt part of the family when we left. I believe there is nothing that either Bill or John wouldn't have done for us. Thank you both so much for a glorious stay!We
Hidden jewel is an apt description
This charming B&B is located in a small village 20 minutes outside of Lucca. If you are looking for a genuine Italian experience away from the crowds, this is the place. At the same time, Lucca is nearby and you are within an easy drive to a number of other popular destinations. The inn is tastefully decorated and our room was comfortable and well appointed. Bill and Johnny, ex-pat Americans, were welcoming hosts with a wealth of local knowledge. Bill even provided a tour of the local olive press (it was harvest season), which was a unique experience and much appreciated. Breakfasts were prepared fresh daily and delicious. Highest recommendation.
These great people were very interested in our little corner of Tuscany, and
enjoyed exploring the local "sights"...the road up towards Monte Serra, planted
with hundreds of camillias, the neighboring houses, some dating from the 1600's,
the local church...the list goes on. We enjoyed serving them...always a pleasure
when they appreciate our efforts. We will welcome them back any time!
Loved our stay here!
This place truly is a "hidden jewel" as the name says -- beautiful home, absolutely lovely surroundings and very welcoming and helpful hosts. The location is perfect for day trips to Lucca, Pisa and many other surrounding towns and villages.
It's always so rewarding to know that our guests respond positively to
our efforts...and these folks were an absolute pleasure to be with.
We'll welcome them back any time they can return!
The Best of Italy
The stay here was the highlight of our trip to Italy!! It was beyond what I had hoped for when looking for a villa in Tuscany. Bill and John (owners) were so gracious, kind and so much fun to be around. They fixed a beautiful breakfast each day and often times we met late afternoon for a bit of happy hour. Their home is stunning!!! The bedrooms and bathrooms are complete with lovely linens, soap, hair dryers and spotless. (I make a note of this because I found other places we rented in Italy did not have such things). The property is stunning!!! The care and beauty of the flowers and lush gardens are a must to go out and just breath. Its a wonderful place to just relax and truly enjoy Italy. We loved the town of Lucca,...and appreciated the recommendations of Bill and John for places to see and eat at. You owe it to yourself to stay here while you visit this part of Italy. When we left (stayed 4 nights) we all felt like we left family.
These two lovely ladies from Arizona were an absolute pleasure to be with...wonderful attitude, great adventure spirit, and easy to please. They
are already a part of our "family" here at Il Rufigio...and hopefully they will
consider a return in the near future...we sure hope so.
A Hidden GEM in Tuscany
What is not to love about a cozy home, outstanding hosts, a fresh breakfast, and beautiful scenery?!
You will get all of that, plus more at Il Rifugio. My family and I stayed here recently, for a little over a week, and we would all highly recommend this location to anyone looking for an absolutely stand out holiday!
First, lets talk location: nestled along the olive trees in the countryside, but conveniently located about 1 hour from Pisa, around 2 hours from Florence, 15 minutes from Lucca, and about 2 or so hours from Cinque Terre, this B&B presents the best for all interests! I mean come on, it doesn't get much better than that. This B&B is perfect for anyone looking to get away for a relaxing stay, but still has intentions to see the sights, then get away from the crowds at the end of the day.
Next, the atmosphere of the place: beautiful, comfortable, clean, and tastefully decorated. Flowers and plants spread throughout, as well as eclectic art and decor everywhere; just outstanding!
Lastly (although I could go on forever), the hosts Bill and John. They are now like family, I was actually sad to leave them. They were so insightful, attentive, and accommodating with everything and anything. Whether it was offering suggestions for day trips, providing light snacks to end the day, or just friendly conversation, they will steal your hearts.. I know they stole ours.
I cannot extend enough praise about our stay here, so I will end by saying that this b&b is a gem in Tuscany <3
We were completely overwhelmed by this wonderful American family. It was a reunion of sorts, as the son and his wife are living in England, and don't get to see the family very often. We didn't have to entertain them, as they had a great time playing
funny games in the evening, with our "Happy Hour" food and wine, in front of the fire.
They are very much part of our family now...we can only hope for a return visit very soon...they are always welcome.
A wonderful stay at Il Rifugio
My wife and I had a perfect, restorative week at Il Rifugio. John and Bill couldn't be nicer: the beauty of their buildings and grounds reflects the same graciousness they show their guests. The setting in the hills to the south of Lucca has the gentle beauty one expects of the Tuscan countryside, but happily without the crowds, heat, or fuss of summertime Lucca. The croissants (cornetti) that showed up at breakfast everyday (fresh from the bakery up the hill) were better than any I've found in Paris. With the friendly, informal Tre Tigli available for dinner just up another hill from Il Rifugio, we didn't have to budge if we didn't feel like it. We're already looking for an excuse to come back.
Our recommendation could not be higher.
Our local bakery is making believers out of our guests...we serve hot briosh
(criossants) every morning, along with a "torta" or a sweet cake... the guests all seem to love the fresh baked items...these folks were on an extended holiday, visiting several areas both here in Italy and Europe. It was a complete pleasure being with them...and we can only hope they can come back soon. They are always welcome here at Il Rifugio.
