About Denise Holden
Denise is a cartoonist and obsessive gardener. I grew up in Virginia Beach after my Navy family settled here. I still live in the area, just a few miles away. Tom, my husband and transplanted Buck-eye from Ohio, was a newspaper reporter for over 30 years and now works for the local transit company. We have three children, a very old dog we inherited, lots of plants, and a koi pond that I fuss over. You can ask me about any flower in the garden and I can tell you more than you want to hear. My husband and I both like to cook. We like to travel and have family and friends all over the world. My mother was French, from the South of France, but I have become terribly rusty with the language.
Denise Holden purchased this Cottage in 1990
Why Denise Holden chose Northeast Virginia Beach
The Pink House is very special to our family. I bought it as a young woman when it had seen better days. The area is quirky, artsy, and alive. Originally, the now 70 year old house was a summer home for a Norfolk family, only used occasionally. I loved how close it was to everything and all the activity surrounding it. The paneling, bathroom tile and fireplace are original late 1940-early 50s. With my father's help, I fixed it up and added the back closet area, redid the kitchen, and over time, made it into a cute, though small, comfortable cottage. My husband moved into the white apartments next door. We became friends and eventually married at the House with all our friends in a backyard ceremony. After our first child was born, the tiny space got to be a bit difficult, so we moved further away, keeping the Pink House as a rental to help pay for it. We love to hike in the State Park and often ride bikes on the boardwalk or go listen to a concert. I love the Neptune Festival in September and buying ice cream during evening strolls. In the Spring of 2016, I decided I wanted to keep the house for family and friends to visit, so we added air conditioning and furnished the house as we would like to live. Over the next few years, I plan to renew the back garden and add a shed so we can have bicycles and beach equipment handy. We are not interested in renting it all the time, but I am proud of this house and would like to share the joy it has given me with other travelers.
What makes this Cottage unique
No question, everyone's favorite part of this house is the front porch. Originally, without air conditioning, it was too hot to stay inside so I had a little table for eating and a sitting area for visiting. If friends driving by saw candles burning, they knew I was home for the evening and would stop by to visit. Every morning I would get my coffee and putter in the garden and in the evening I would go ride my bike or rollerblade on the boardwalk. I love the open kitchen and the huge sunlit windows. I am still acquainted with the owners of the apartments next door, stopping in to chat and catch up with the area news. Within walking distance there's the beach, concerts, food, the Convention Center, lots of restaurants and activities. I've had complete strangers stop to admire the house and take photos of the garden. There's always something going on there, always activity. I love my Little Pink House!

The most precious beach house ever! Amazing location. Equipped with everything you could possibly need. Beds are super comfy. Very clean and beautifully decorated! An obviously well loved and cared for House!
Thank you so much! Selma takes personal pride in how she keeps the cottage, clean and tidy with everything a guest might need. I take care of the flowers, decor, and fuss over details. (Ever argue over how a towel should be folded? Yea, that happens.) We work as a team and as friends.
I feel a good vacation house should make you feel relaxed and happy as soon as you walk in the door. Welcome, and feel at peace here.
Independence Day at Virginia Beach 2018
Comfortable, charming cottage & just the right size for a quick trip to the beach. Denise has it stocked with all the comforts of home, everything you could possible need. Best part was being able to take our Dogo Argentino "Bella" on vacation with us! We would definitely book this location again at Virginia Beach! #loved the little pink house
Going Vintage in Virginia Beach
We enjoyed our stay in the Pink House. The location was great - close to shops and restaurants, but far enough away from the crowds and noise of the beach.
The house was well equipped, except for running out of paper goods. We made use of the beach chairs and umbrellas, and board games. The ABC TV station was not available. We missed our morning shows - GMA, and Live with Kelly, & evening ritual of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, but kept busy anyway. NetFlix was nice to have.
The AC worked well, thank goodness, since there was a heatwave. We enjoyed sitting on the cute screened front porch, and watching for fireflies.
Overall, a very memorable stay! Thank you, Denise.
Cute & comfortable cottage
We enjoyed our stay here. It was clean, very comfortable and had all the comforts of home. Great communication for Denise as well!
Extremely comfortable and clean. Excellent location easy walk to ocean, boardwalk and restaurants
Great house in a great location. Really enjoyed the screened porch and the flowers
What an amazing find in VA Beach! We hadn't been to VA Beach in years, so glad we found such a cute spot and a short drive from home (DC). My husband and I stayed in the pink house for a long weekend (our last little getaway before our twins are born) and it was so relaxing. The house is so charming and cozy, we felt right at home (so did our pups). The house is fully stocked with everything you would need and the beds were beyond comfortable. The little touches in the house are what made this stay so personal and relaxing for us (the items in the bathroom for guest use, the welcome gift basket etc.). The house is close to everything, the boardwalk, beach, shops, restaurants and a very short drive to the grocery store (all within walking distance and I did all of that walking 7 months pregnant, so really everything is super close). We loved sitting on the front porch (screened in) with our dogs and grilling out in the backyard. Denise was very helpful and gave us so much info about the area. We loved it!
I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay and excited for your upcoming adventures. The beach is a wonderful place to walk and just enjoy being outside. But isn't it nice to be able to grab an ice cream cone or treat if you get a craving...NOW!
We hope you will smile everytime you think of that magical time before the babies when you could sit and relax....we look forward to scrambling to baby-proof for you in the future. Drop us a line about the babies!
The Pink House is just four blocks from the ocean, and only two blocks from the expressway, providing quick and easy access for traveling. The wide public beach is three miles long and sufficiently wide to allow plenty of space for people to relax and lounge. There is public parking (fee) nearby if you want to have visitors join you for the day, otherwise parking can be difficult. There are restaurants, bars, and convenience stores within walking distance and the boardwalk is a great place to stroll or ride a bike. Bike rentals are available on the boardwalk by the day or hour. When I lived in this house, I always enjoyed the free concerts on the nearby 24th street stage and Beach Street activities all summer long. There are free concerts and shows on Atlantic Avenue from 17th-25th Streets between 6:00-9:00pm during the season, shopping and more touristy-type activities on Pacific Avenue (the resort area is named like a Monopoly Board). On the boardwalk, walkers and bikers have separate paths for convenience. IFly, an indoor sky-diving experience is just a couple blocks away as is Putt-Putt Golf and the Convention Center. Within a 15 minute drive is our beautiful First Landing State Park where you can hike or rent kayaks to get an idea of what the area looked like when settlers first arrived and in the other direction is the Marine Aquarium and Adventure Park for casual or serious obstacle course work and zip-lines. Several local businesses offer surf camps and kayaking tours as well as boat tours and fishing trips. The Virginia Beach Amphitheatre is nearby. Norfolk is just an expressway drive away with ships, museums, and restaurants to explore and festivals almost weekly. The Chrysler Museum has one of the best glass collections in the world and offers classes and demonstrations weekly in their own glass studio. Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens are one hour away. There are local Farmers Markets close by and several large shopping malls to choose from within a 30 minute drive or on the bus route. Two major grocery stores as well as a coin laundry are just blocks away.
