About Denise Holden
I am a cartoonist and obsessive gardener, grew up in Virginia Beach after my Navy family settled here. I still live in the area, just a few miles away. Tom, my husband and transplanted Buck-eye from Ohio, was a newspaper reporter for over 30 years and now works for the local transit company as a 'talking head'. We have three children, a beautiful ex-hunting dog we got from a wrong phone number, lots of plants, and a koi pond that I fuss over. You can ask me about any flower in the garden and I can tell you more than you want to hear. My husband and I both like to cook. My husband's constant goal is to get beyond all the many projects I keep coming up with. My mother was French, from the South of France, but I have become terribly rusty with the language. We lived in this house, were married in the backyard, taught our daughter to walk on the front path. Please enjoy it and make it part of your family's story too.
Denise Holden purchased this Cottage in 1990
Why Denise Holden chose Northeast Virginia Beach
The Pink House is very special to our family. I bought it as a young woman when it had seen better days. The area is quirky, artsy, and alive. Originally, I believe the now 70 year old house was a summer home for a Norfolk family, only used occasionally. I loved how close it was to everything and all the activity surrounding it. The paneling, bathroom tile and fireplace are original late 1940-early 50s. With my father's help, I fixed it up and added the back closet area, redid the kitchen, and over time, made it into a cute, though small, comfortable cottage. My husband-to-be moved into the white apartments next door. We became friends and eventually married at the cottage with all our friends attending a backyard ceremony. After our first child was born, the tiny space got to be a bit difficult, so we moved further away, keeping the Pink House as a rental to help pay for it. We love to hike in the State Park and often ride bikes on the boardwalk or go listen to a concert. I love the Neptune Festival in September and buying ice cream during evening strolls. In the Spring of 2016, I decided I wanted to keep the house for family and friends to visit, so we added air conditioning and furnished the house as we would like to live, to be enjoyed by others who might see the same potential in this remnant from earlier days. Over the next few years, I plan to renew the back garden and add a shed so we can have bicycles and beach equipment handy. We are not interested in renting it all the time, but I am proud of this house and would like to share the joy it has given me with other travelers.
What makes this Cottage unique
No question, everyone's favorite part of this house is the front porch. Originally, without air conditioning, it was too hot to stay inside so I had a little table for eating and a sitting area for visiting. If friends driving by saw candles burning, they knew I was home for the evening and would stop by to visit. Every morning I would get my coffee and putter in the garden and in the evening I would go ride my bike or rollerblade on the boardwalk. I love the open kitchen and the huge sunlit windows. I am still acquainted with the owners of the apartments next door, stopping in to chat and catch up with the area news. Within walking distance there's the beach, concerts, food, the Convention Center, lots of restaurants and activities. I've had complete strangers stop to admire the house and take photos of the garden. There's always something going on there, always activity. I love my Little Pink House!

This is a great little house and we truly enjoyed our stay here. We were close to the Ocean, restaurants, and shopping so we walked most places we went. It's very clean and is stocked with just about anything you need. We will definitely try to stay here again on our next trip to VA Beach!!!
The Little Pink House
Close to the beach, very clean and cozy house. Just a short walk to the boardwalk. Well appointed kitchen open to the dining and sitting areas. Food and coffee shops close by.
Everything was as advertised and Denise was available anytime to answer questions and dispense local info.
Relaxation at The Little Pink House
If you are looking for an adorable comfortable 2 bedroom house, look no more. Denise, the owner clearly has put a lot of thought into making this home a hit for your vacation making tasteful and clever ideas. Comfy beds, great front porch, well stocked kitchen, puzzles, books, games, coloring, ceiling fans and Netflix for an occasional evening movie. The furnishings are on spot, a welcome basket, and did I mention the location? Two blocks from boardwalk, beach, great shops and restaurants! Fell in love with this house and hated to leave.
Thank you so much! We try to make this cottage comfy for those seeking a little retreat. It is appointed very much the way it was when I lived there, but with better towels!
For the record, the cottage is 4 blocks from the water's edge, not 2. When you are walking and looking around, you can lose track of how far you went.
It is 2 blocks from a few good restaurants and hang-outs that I recommend to guests, depending on what they are looking for. It's also just 2 blocks from the IFly place, which is fun for the adventurous. By bicycle, you can do a bit more. There is no need to move your car once here. Everything one might need is nearby. Denise
Amazing weekend at Pink House
Stayed here because of all the great reviews - was not disappointed. House is lovely, and very clear that someone put time into decorating it and keeping it nice. Feels like staying in a real home. The beds are also very comfy (not always guaranteed), which is a plus. Had some questions about the house during our stay, and Denise was always quick to respond and very friendly. Look no further than the Pink House!
Thank you so much! The key to our success is the teamwork that Selma and I put into this house. I do the gardening, repairs and decorating, Selma cleans that house and makes sure that the details are done each and every time. I have watched her in amazement (from a distance, because she will fuss like a marsh wren if you walk on her freshly mopped floors). Each time we walk out the door, we feel it is as nice as we can do....we would stay there.
In the past year, dozens of rentals have joined the market. If you just want to park your belongings, go there. If you want to feel like you live there, at least for a while, this is the place. Selma will fuss at you too if you track mud in the house.
2019 Suarez vacation
We had an amazing stay!! Everything we could need was well accommodated. The little pink house was a home away from home!! My family is already talking about going back. The home itself was well furnished and lovely art work and pictures on the walls. Perfect size kitchen! Overall I was beyond impressed and would highly recommend staying and this cozy cottage!!
Cutest lil spot
We found a great lil house that was perfect for our family. Instead of getting a room at a hotel, I decided a house is the better way to go for us 5. It has everything u need to enjoy the beach life and comforts of home. And the flowers! There are everywhere inside as well. Loved the pink house!!!! The bigger bed is soft, it was full size and the 2nd bedroom has a pull out single bed so 3 kids can b comfortable.
The Pink House is just four blocks from the ocean, and only two blocks from the expressway, providing quick and easy access for traveling. The wide public beach is three miles long and sufficiently wide to allow plenty of space for people to relax and lounge. There is public parking (fee) nearby if you want to have visitors join you for the day, otherwise parking can be difficult. There are restaurants, bars, and convenience stores within walking distance and the boardwalk is a great place to stroll or ride a bike. Bike rentals are available on the boardwalk by the day or hour. When I lived in this house, I always enjoyed the free concerts on the nearby 24th street stage and Beach Street activities all summer long. There are free concerts and shows on Atlantic Avenue from 17th-25th Streets between 6:00-9:00pm during the season, shopping and more touristy-type activities on Pacific Avenue (the resort area is named like a Monopoly Board). On the boardwalk, walkers and bikers have separate paths for convenience. IFly, an indoor sky-diving experience is just a couple blocks away as is Putt-Putt Golf and the Convention Center. Within a 15 minute drive is our beautiful First Landing State Park where you can hike or rent kayaks to get an idea of what the area looked like when settlers first arrived and in the other direction is the Marine Aquarium and Adventure Park for casual or serious obstacle course work and zip-lines. Several local businesses offer surf camps and kayaking tours as well as boat tours and fishing trips. The Virginia Beach Amphitheatre is nearby. Norfolk is just an expressway drive away with ships, museums, and restaurants to explore and festivals almost weekly. The Chrysler Museum has one of the best glass collections in the world and offers classes and demonstrations weekly in their own glass studio. Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens are one hour away. There are local Farmers Markets close by and several large shopping malls to choose from within a 30 minute drive or on the bus route. Two major grocery stores as well as a coin laundry are just blocks away.
