About Denise Holden
Denise is a cartoonist and obsessive gardener. I grew up in Virginia Beach after my Navy family settled here. I still live in the area, just a few miles away. Tom, my husband and transplanted Buck-eye from Ohio, was a newspaper reporter for over 30 years and now works for the local transit company. We have three children, a very old dog we inherited, lots of plants, and a koi pond that I fuss over. You can ask me about any flower in the garden and I can tell you more than you want to hear. My husband and I both like to cook. We like to travel and have family and friends all over the world. My mother was French, from the South of France, but I have become terribly rusty with the language.
Denise Holden purchased this Cottage in 1990
Why Denise Holden chose Northeast Virginia Beach
The Pink House is very special to our family. I bought it as a young woman when it had seen better days. The area is quirky, artsy, and alive. Originally, the now 70 year old house was a summer home for a Norfolk family, only used occasionally. I loved how close it was to everything and all the activity surrounding it. The paneling, bathroom tile and fireplace are original late 1940-early 50s. With my father's help, I fixed it up and added the back closet area, redid the kitchen, and over time, made it into a cute, though small, comfortable cottage. My husband moved into the white apartments next door. We became friends and eventually married at the House with all our friends in a backyard ceremony. After our first child was born, the tiny space got to be a bit difficult, so we moved further away, keeping the Pink House as a rental to help pay for it. We love to hike in the State Park and often ride bikes on the boardwalk or go listen to a concert. I love the Neptune Festival in September and buying ice cream during evening strolls. In the Spring of 2016, I decided I wanted to keep the house for family and friends to visit, so we added air conditioning and furnished the house as we would like to live. Over the next few years, I plan to renew the back garden and add a shed so we can have bicycles and beach equipment handy. We are not interested in renting it all the time, but I am proud of this house and would like to share the joy it has given me with other travelers.
What makes this Cottage unique
No question, everyone's favorite part of this house is the front porch. Originally, without air conditioning, it was too hot to stay inside so I had a little table for eating and a sitting area for visiting. If friends driving by saw candles burning, they knew I was home for the evening and would stop by to visit. Every morning I would get my coffee and putter in the garden and in the evening I would go ride my bike or rollerblade on the boardwalk. I love the open kitchen and the huge sunlit windows. I am still acquainted with the owners of the apartments next door, stopping in to chat and catch up with the area news. Within walking distance there's the beach, concerts, food, the Convention Center, lots of restaurants and activities. I've had complete strangers stop to admire the house and take photos of the garden. There's always something going on there, always activity. I love my Little Pink House!

Would give it 6 stars if I could. Great beach house!
We stayed here for the second year in a row and have grown very attached to the house. It's in perfect proximity to the beach, restaurants, and parks. The layout couldn't be better, especially the screened in front porch. The inside is spotless and has everything you need for an extended stay. This has become our annual vacation rental and the owner is a pleasure to work with. Highly recommended for anyone vacationing in VA Beach.
I immediately shared this review with Selma, my housekeeper/helper. She takes these things personally! We both work to make your stay easy and relaxing. She minds the inside, keeping it up to snuff and I work the garden outside. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay enough to come back again.
Fall is such a nice time to visit. The weather is still warm and the resort area isn't as crowded, plus, you can take your dogs for a walk on the nearby beach! You happened to visit during the Neptune Festival, but there are other events in this time frame as well. Look at the city's website to see what they have cooking.
Selma and I have started planning for next season. With the quieter months, we will be painting the porch (yea, fun!) and I will be changing out some of the furniture for more weather resistant items like this year's deck chairs. I'm even researching some clear vinyl hangings to make the porch comfortable in off season. I am so happy others find the cottage as appealing as I do. Until next year, Thanks!
Love The Little Pink House!
This house is so cute and charming! We loved our stay and will certainly book here before considering a hotel on the beach.
What a sweet house!
The four of us spent a week in this adorable pink house in August 2018, and we loved it! Lots of nice touches. Games, books, a lovely cottage garden, a fully furnished kitchen, and my favorite - the writing table in the corner of the dining room. I'd get up early, make a pot of coffee, and sit at that table with my coffee and read. Vacation bliss! The house is walking distance to the beach, and one of our favorite restaurants - Tautog's. Highly recommend this lovingly kept little Pink House!
Just like home
Great place to stay! The house is perfect with everything one needs to relax and enjoy the beach. The screened in porch facing the east allows for the perfect place to drink coffee and enjoy the sunrise and the beautiful flowers that engulf the front yard. Everything you need for a relaxing stay is provided. Denise the owner is a wonderful host. She works hard to make your stay the best and her communications make you feel like you have known her for years. She has provided extra amenities that makes the trip to the beach so easy. I highly recommend this property as it has a unique ambiance and feels like being at home.
A lovely home for our weekend visit!
The pink cottage on Baltic was the perfect location for our stay. We managed well with 5 ladies and one bathroom. The water pressure was fine and bath towels were provided as well as emergency sundries. Although there was a lack of toilet paper, the kitchen was well supplied with dishes, glasses, cups and other utensils and equipment. Full-length mirrors were available in both bedrooms. Living room was a spacious common area to sit in and chat as was the dining area. The chairs by the kitchen island was a bit low for the counter, so that was a bit uncomfortable for sitting and eating. But there were enough other chairs for all of us. Street parking is great with the permits and we were able to walk to the beach, local eateries and shops. A 24-hour Harris Teeter down the road was also very convenient. Although it was quite humid during our stay, the screened porch also had plenty of seating for relaxing. The welcome basket of treats was a wonderful surprise. Damage deposit was returned as stated. Thank you, Denise! We would consider staying here again next year.
Thank so much for your indepth review. All comments are very useful to us as Selma the housekeeper and I are always trying to find ways to improve and help our guests enjoy themselves. I'm glad you found the overall experience satisfying. I'll try to work on the rest (Can't help the humidity. It was rough this year!) The emergency sundries basket came about because my husband is forever forgetting toothbrushes, bandaides, floss....the basket is the same as what I carry when we travel. The counter stools do seem short. The last ones were too tall. I'll keep trying.
Toilet paper is a touchy issue, along with paper towels. We have found that whatever amount we put out, people use. It's not that expensive, but our space is limited. We also have to be careful with the plumbing. So our practice is to leave just one roll of each per visit. If guests need more, there is a store around the corner.
Which brings me to the convenience of all the local stores and eateries. Within just a couple blocks in either direction are convenient shops, so when you need something in a hurry, you can get it in minutes.
We try to provide a variety of seating options for people. I like to sit near the flowers, my husband likes the swinging glider on the porch. We hope you found your perfect perch for enjoying your travel companions and the neighborhood atmosphere.
The most precious beach house ever! Amazing location. Equipped with everything you could possibly need. Beds are super comfy. Very clean and beautifully decorated! An obviously well loved and cared for House!
Thank you so much! Selma takes personal pride in how she keeps the cottage, clean and tidy with everything a guest might need. I take care of the flowers, decor, and fuss over details. (Ever argue over how a towel should be folded? Yea, that happens.) We work as a team and as friends.
I feel a good vacation house should make you feel relaxed and happy as soon as you walk in the door. Welcome, and feel at peace here.
The Pink House is just four blocks from the ocean, and only two blocks from the expressway, providing quick and easy access for traveling. The wide public beach is three miles long and sufficiently wide to allow plenty of space for people to relax and lounge. There is public parking (fee) nearby if you want to have visitors join you for the day, otherwise parking can be difficult. There are restaurants, bars, and convenience stores within walking distance and the boardwalk is a great place to stroll or ride a bike. Bike rentals are available on the boardwalk by the day or hour. When I lived in this house, I always enjoyed the free concerts on the nearby 24th street stage and Beach Street activities all summer long. There are free concerts and shows on Atlantic Avenue from 17th-25th Streets between 6:00-9:00pm during the season, shopping and more touristy-type activities on Pacific Avenue (the resort area is named like a Monopoly Board). On the boardwalk, walkers and bikers have separate paths for convenience. IFly, an indoor sky-diving experience is just a couple blocks away as is Putt-Putt Golf and the Convention Center. Within a 15 minute drive is our beautiful First Landing State Park where you can hike or rent kayaks to get an idea of what the area looked like when settlers first arrived and in the other direction is the Marine Aquarium and Adventure Park for casual or serious obstacle course work and zip-lines. Several local businesses offer surf camps and kayaking tours as well as boat tours and fishing trips. The Virginia Beach Amphitheatre is nearby. Norfolk is just an expressway drive away with ships, museums, and restaurants to explore and festivals almost weekly. The Chrysler Museum has one of the best glass collections in the world and offers classes and demonstrations weekly in their own glass studio. Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens are one hour away. There are local Farmers Markets close by and several large shopping malls to choose from within a 30 minute drive or on the bus route. Two major grocery stores as well as a coin laundry are just blocks away.
