About Denise Holden
Denise is a cartoonist and obsessive gardener. I grew up in Virginia Beach after my Navy family settled here. I still live in the area, just a few miles away. Tom, my husband and transplanted Buck-eye from Ohio, was a newspaper reporter for over 30 years and now works for the local transit company. We have three children, a very old dog we inherited, lots of plants, and a koi pond that I fuss over. You can ask me about any flower in the garden and I can tell you more than you want to hear. My husband and I both like to cook. We like to travel and have family and friends all over the world. My mother was French, from the South of France, but I have become terribly rusty with the language.
Denise Holden purchased this Cottage in 1990
Why Denise Holden chose Northeast Virginia Beach
The Pink House is very special to our family. I bought it as a young woman when it had seen better days. The area is quirky, artsy, and alive. Originally, the now 70 year old house was a summer home for a Norfolk family, only used occasionally. I loved how close it was to everything and all the activity surrounding it. The paneling, bathroom tile and fireplace are original late 1940-early 50s. With my father's help, I fixed it up and added the back closet area, redid the kitchen, and over time, made it into a cute, though small, comfortable cottage. My husband moved into the white apartments next door. We became friends and eventually married at the House with all our friends in a backyard ceremony. After our first child was born, the tiny space got to be a bit difficult, so we moved further away, keeping the Pink House as a rental to help pay for it. We love to hike in the State Park and often ride bikes on the boardwalk or go listen to a concert. I love the Neptune Festival in September and buying ice cream during evening strolls. In the Spring of 2016, I decided I wanted to keep the house for family and friends to visit, so we added air conditioning and furnished the house as we would like to live. Over the next few years, I plan to renew the back garden and add a shed so we can have bicycles and beach equipment handy. We are not interested in renting it all the time, but I am proud of this house and would like to share the joy it has given me with other travelers.
What makes this Cottage unique
No question, everyone's favorite part of this house is the front porch. Originally, without air conditioning, it was too hot to stay inside so I had a little table for eating and a sitting area for visiting. If friends driving by saw candles burning, they knew I was home for the evening and would stop by to visit. Every morning I would get my coffee and putter in the garden and in the evening I would go ride my bike or rollerblade on the boardwalk. I love the open kitchen and the huge sunlit windows. I am still acquainted with the owners of the apartments next door, stopping in to chat and catch up with the area news. Within walking distance there's the beach, concerts, food, the Convention Center, lots of restaurants and activities. I've had complete strangers stop to admire the house and take photos of the garden. There's always something going on there, always activity. I love my Little Pink House!

Always perfect at the little pink house
We stay here multiple times a year, when visiting family/friends. The home is always perfect!!! Thank you for sharing your home with us!
Thank you so much for including us in your holiday plans. As much as we like to share our cute little cottage with others into quaint and quirky, having the compliment of repeat travelers is a real treat!
Until next time, be safe, be well!
Perfect vacation rental
We rented the Pink House to stay in while visiting family for Christmas in Virginia Bch. The location was perfect being less than 10 minutes away. It was perfectly comfor 3 adults and a fun place for our kids and grandkids to visit. The extra care and holiday treats Denise provided were the icing on the cake, thank you!!
We really enjoyed staying at the Pink House. We stayed with our two young children and Boston terrier. Our kids loved the house and would say after visiting our family that they were ready to go back to the pink house. We loved that the character of the house was not lost with the updates. Everything you need for a great stay is provided! We loved the little touches of the games, books, hand soap, etc. We stayed on the off season and it was nice and quiet. Super convenient location for getting to and from. There is a grocery store open 24hrs right a few blocks down street. Plenty of places to eat but having breakfast and coffee at the beautifully handmade table was our favorite. The owners were extremely responsive to questions. We enjoyed our stay a lot and will definitely rent again.
Thank-you for taking the time to write such a thorough review of the Pink House.
We tinker with the house and try to make sure it's as cozy and calm as possible. Sometimes....I just hang out there myself.
Please come stay with us again, make a habit of it so you have shared memories.
Beautiful home and walking distance to beach!
My family and I stayed for the weekend. The home at all the amenities we needed and was also beautiful and comfortable. We could walk to the the ocean in about 10 minutes. There were also shops and restaurants in walking distance.
If you are looking for a quaint, quiet place to stay this is the place.
I really enjoyed the "Pink House" and would recommend it to friends. The house is quaint and relaxing and the owner adds just the right personal touches.
I also loved the location!!
I was traveling from the west coast to the east coast with my 80 year old mother and was looking for a single story home to stay in while we visited my son who is stationed st Little Creek. Trying to find a single level home on the east coast is like trying to find a needle in a haystack but I found the Pink House and I’m so glad I did. Being a lover of old houses with character, we really enjoyed it here. It had all the amenities we needed, even a crockpot which made for a nice easy dinner of homemade chili after a long day of exploring! The house’s proximity to the beach and the local grocery store is all within walking distance. My son is stationed in VB for the next 5 years so I’m sure we’ll be back. Denise was a great host. Responded to text quickly and I really enjoyed chit-chatting with her.
Thank you for your thoughtful and descriptive review. I understand your wanting to make a home away from home. We aim to make your stay convenient. I put items in the house that are a bit beyond a typical 'vacation house' because I know my guests have a variety of reasons for coming here, not just the beach (though a nice asset!)
I'm sure your son appreciated your visit! May he stay safe and enjoy his adventures.
The Pink House is just four blocks from the ocean, and only two blocks from the expressway, providing quick and easy access for traveling. The wide public beach is three miles long and sufficiently wide to allow plenty of space for people to relax and lounge. There is public parking (fee) nearby if you want to have visitors join you for the day, otherwise parking can be difficult. There are restaurants, bars, and convenience stores within walking distance and the boardwalk is a great place to stroll or ride a bike. Bike rentals are available on the boardwalk by the day or hour. When I lived in this house, I always enjoyed the free concerts on the nearby 24th street stage and Beach Street activities all summer long. There are free concerts and shows on Atlantic Avenue from 17th-25th Streets between 6:00-9:00pm during the season, shopping and more touristy-type activities on Pacific Avenue (the resort area is named like a Monopoly Board). On the boardwalk, walkers and bikers have separate paths for convenience. IFly, an indoor sky-diving experience is just a couple blocks away as is Putt-Putt Golf and the Convention Center. Within a 15 minute drive is our beautiful First Landing State Park where you can hike or rent kayaks to get an idea of what the area looked like when settlers first arrived and in the other direction is the Marine Aquarium and Adventure Park for casual or serious obstacle course work and zip-lines. Several local businesses offer surf camps and kayaking tours as well as boat tours and fishing trips. The Virginia Beach Amphitheatre is nearby. Norfolk is just an expressway drive away with ships, museums, and restaurants to explore and festivals almost weekly. The Chrysler Museum has one of the best glass collections in the world and offers classes and demonstrations weekly in their own glass studio. Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens are one hour away. There are local Farmers Markets close by and several large shopping malls to choose from within a 30 minute drive or on the bus route. Two major grocery stores as well as a coin laundry are just blocks away.

Local lodging taxes and fees are paid out of the total bill, no extra cost to you. Housekeeping is paid from a minimum cleaning fee and a percentage out of your total, assuming about 2-3 hours cleaning per stay. (If someone mentions how clean the cottage is in their review, Selma gets a bonus as well.) We reserve the right to use the deposit funds if the cottage has been left unnecessarily messy, as determined by our trusted housekeeper. (Don't make her mad!)The linen fee off-sets our cost for all linens that we provide: clean and folded, beds made, blankets, pillows, towels for bath and beach. Please use make-up remover to clean off make-up and tanning lotions before using the house towels and sheets. The strong dyes used in these products will permanently stain white cotton. We reserve the right to charge for ruined linens. Since we only provide linens once, and wash once, we only charge once. This way seemed more fair to guests, whether you stay two days or two weeks. We make the beds up and set out towels according to how many guests are expected. We do not charge per person, so more people staying than claimed could result in loss of deposit. All items left in the house for travelers' use are expected to remain and be used properly, including but not limited to towels, racks, grill, chairs, pillows, blankets, flower pruners, and wheeled cart. House items will be listed with cost descriptions from deposit if missing to allow guest to defend themselves. Disturbing the neighbors could result in guest being asked to leave immediately with no refund. Pink House owner reserves right to charge for damages if the police have to be called or if guests stay over the check-out time. Disregarding Dog Policy could result in deposit charges at the discretion of the cottage owner. Guests are invited to keep and enjoy the items in their gift basket.
