A cozy cabin

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I had a great time here! We spent all day snowboarding and hiking and relaxed in the hottub at night. The kitchen is very well stocked if you plan on cooking (keep an eye on the food though since there are no working smoke detectors). Wifi can be a bit weak if you have a lot of people there but cell signal is great. Unless you have four wheel drive we would not recommend taking the gravel road down to the cabin if it has snowed, park on the main street and walk down the steps. One of my friends got stuck on the gravel road but the neighbors were nice enough to come tow her out. Overall, a wonderful time! We will likely be back next year :-)

Wonderful mountain escape

  • 4 of 5

The house was so nice. Rooms are well laid out and clean. We loved all the trees surrounding the house. We'd love to return. Easy quick drive to wisp made it a good spot for our ski weekend.

Cozy and convenient cabin

  • 5 of 5

Everything was just as described and we had a great snowbound weekend at Writer's Refuge. Patty was wonderful to work with and ensured we were well-taken care of - including providing a list of recommendations, thorough instructions on the house, and even checking a few days before that we had a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well-stocked for all the cooking we did. The hot tub was the perfect ending to each day - we would recommend this house to anyone and hope to be back in the future

Peaceful, beautiful surroundings, stargazing was phenomenal

  • 5 of 5

We had everything we needed for a meaningful and memorable vacation with longtime friends! The surroundings were gorgeous with abundant fall foliage and overall serenity and seclusion. Our two dogs couldn’t get enough of the pond and grounds! The huge back deck and lower level jacuzzi provided us with pristine views of the sky and trees.

Great Location!

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Deep Creek Lake and our time in the Mountain Chalet. The hot tub was a fun time and being allowed to have our 2 labs with us really made the vacation that much better. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. We had breakfast on the deck each morning and came back from a busy day to relax in the hot tub. Great location, close to everything but still tucked back in the woods to feel very private and secluded.

lovely cabin in a spectacular setting......lots of quiet. Although it rained for most of the week, we still had a great time.

About Patty Brown

We are a family of writers and communicators based in Washington DC. Mom and Dad have been journalists since the late eighties...and there is a good chance that our son will follow in the family business. Writing is what we love to do. But it is also a deadline-intensive line of business. So every chance we get, we head for Deep Creek Lake and Writers' Refuge.

Patty Brown purchased this chalet in 1999

Why Patty Brown chose McHenry

It is a chalet-style house and we fell in love with it the minute we drove up the drive way. It was off the beaten path while still being convenient to all the best the area has to offer. You are five minutes away form the the lake and the slopes. Or you can just curl up with a book in bed...or on the deck...and get lost in the rustic surroundings.

What makes this chalet unique

The chalet is completely surrounded by the woods...away from all distractions. The views are gorgeous...especially at night...especially from the hot tub when you lean your head back on a starry night.
