You can access the Sound via a private grassy lawn to swim, fish or play using the owner-provided kayaks and stand-up paddle boards! The Frequent Flyer from a Parent’s Perspective

If you’re like me, “family vacation” brings Chevy Chase and the Griswold’s to mind. Bored kids, an over-packed “family truckster” and expensive meals are just the beginning! I wanted to share why vacationing with my family at The Frequent Flyer takes the National Lampoon out of the equation and makes for not only great family fun but also a real vacation for me.

The ‘man cave’ (aka garage area) of The Frequent Flyer is packed with extras to keep everyone busy! From sand toys to bikes and Kayak’s to stand-up paddle boards, the family will have plenty to do and you won’t have to pack, or worse rent, all of the toys that make life at the beach more fun. There are even beach chairs and beach umbrellas for the whole family!

From the best tanning deck on the house I can watch my kids play safely on the beach of the shallow-water Sound. They spend hours trying to catch hermit crabs and minnows while I catch up on my tan and favorite book.

Walkie-Talkies are available for the kids if they take a bike ride to the corner store so I can give them a little freedom but still keep in touch. And, the walkie-talkies work from the house to both the Ocean Beach and the Sound Beach for older kids.

The fully equipped kitchen means we can save a fortune on restaurant meals and my teenagers can eat their late night cereal and frozen pizza. We save buying the bulky but essential items such as napkins, tin foil, saran wrap, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies because the owner provides them as a convenience. And when you decide to eat out, the local restaurants are family friendly, reasonably priced and amazing.

The Frequent Flyer from a Watersport Enthusiast

The Frequent Flyer has a grassy 1 acre Soundfront lot, a perfect rigging area for every water sport. As a windsurfer and kiteboarder who has been coming to the Outer Banks for 30 years, there is no better Sound access on Hatteras Island. The winds from the S to NNE are ideal for kite and windsurf launching at the house. As winds go NE to SE, you can launch directly across the street on the Ocean side.

The house includes a ground floor enclosed ‘man cave’ plus a storage room for equipment. There are equipment racks outside for drying and inside to lock up at night. A half bath and two showers are outside under the house, in addition to a cleaning station with a utility sink and hose. We can clean up our gear so that it is ready the next day. Rigging, launching, and storing your gear is a breeze at the Frequent Flyer.

The ‘man cave’ also has a TV, small bar and a fridge which adds to the convenience factor. This house really caters to those who want access to the Sound and Ocean for watersports. When the wind is not blowing, the Frequent Flyer still delivers with 6 bikes for cruising the island, 3 kayaks, and 2 stand up paddle boards. And of course, no trip to Hatteras Island is complete without a visit to the local surf shops. Fortunately, Real Watersports, Kitty Hawk Kites, and other shops are all within a few miles.

The Frequent Flyer from a Fishing Perspective

Why settle for the Ocean or Sound when you can have them both! The Frequent Flyer is located on a very narrow segment of the island providing access to both Ocean and Sound fishing. If your target is inlet fishing, “Oregon Inlet” and the “New New Inlet” are just north of the Frequent Flyer.

Convenient storage areas make unloading and storing your gear simple. A deluxe, outdoor fish-cleaning table makes prep a breeze. Bring your casting net as bait can easily be caught along the shore of the Sound. If you prefer to buy bait, or need to update your fishing gear, several bait and tackle shops are just down the street including, Hatteras Jack.

Offshore Fishing Charters are available from nearby Oregon Inlet or head south to the Hatteras Inlet. The Frequent Flyer is a dream vacation spot for the avid fishing enthusiast and novices alike.

About Mark Haines

The Frequent Flyer was named after the owner’s favorite pastime (well, he would argue it is not a pastime but a lifestyle) kiteboarding, and the way he earned his kiteboard time: traveling more than 1.5 million miles by air, working for an engineering company.

An avid windsurfer from back in the early eighties, Mark started kiting in 2000 and quickly became an addict. He soon became a new type of Frequent Flyer, earning miles of airtime boosting, popping, jumping, and soaring over the Pamlico Sound.

Why Mark Haines chose Rodanthe

As his millions of Frequent Flyer miles dwindled, being used up on airfare from Cincinnati (CVG) to Norfolk (ORF), Mark realized it might be time to become a local in order to support his kite habit. In 2009, the family purchased the now Frequent Flyer. They hope that it is a fun vacation destination for families visiting the Outerbanks in the summer and a great spot for Kiters, especially Mark, in the windy off season.

What makes this house unique

As a windsurfer and kiteboarder who has been coming to the OUter Banks for 30 years, there is no better Sound access for rigging and launching on Hatteras Island than what the Frequent Flyer offers. The spot is a dream come true for Mark and Frequent Flyer guests.

Loved the Frequent Flyer! Everything you needed at this spotlessly clean, well appointed home. Loved the fact we were directly on the Sound. Great sunsets, warm water and we enjoyed exploring the shipwreck. Sound was very warm and shallow so I did not have to worry about my teens kayaking or paddle boarding. We had a wonderful view of the eclipse off the balcony. It was fun going between the Sound and the beach although the ocean was too rough for us to swim. We went parasailing in Hatteras and visited the Wright Brother Museum in Kitty Hawk. Mostly we just hung out and relaxed. Loved our nightly Scrabble games. Thanks Mark for maintaining such a beautiful property.

Excellent property - Highly Recommend

The property was in excellent condition and there was plenty of space for everyone. The family had a great time each day. Easy access to the sound and the ocean made it difficult to choose where to "play" each day. The use of the kayaks, paddle boards, chairs and umbrellas were such a convenience and so much fun. We will definitely return some time in the future.

Beautiful getaway

We rented the house for two weeks for a family vacation. We end up staying one week due to the power outages. The place is behind expectations, very clean , spacious, and updated. The open concept worked great , able to watch the kids while cooking and plenty of room for all the cooks . The location is perfect , very close to the beach and few steps from the sound. Used the kayaks , paddle boards had a great time. The kids loved to go fishing at the sound and go on the kayaks. We had the best time ever , can't wait to go back . The owner is a very good person , he was always there to keep us update on the status of the electricity . Thank you for everything and looking forward for another vacation there

A Relaxing Week in Rodanthe

Our entire family really enjoyed our recent stay at the Frequent Flyer. We very much appreciated the fact that each bedroom had its own bathroom. We found the house to be very spacious, nicely decorated, well maintained and immaculately clean.....a must for us. Kudos to Mark and his staff! The kitchen was fully equipped with every pot, pan and utensil you'd ever need, making cooking very enjoyable. The house was well stocked with zip lock bags, tin foil, paper towels, tissues, toilet paper, dishwasher detergent, etc. You name it and it was supplied. No worries about laundry, since a washer and dry are available. Our family made good use of the bikes, kayaks and paddle boards supplied with the house. Also, no need to bring beach accessories such as umbrellas, chairs and even sand toys, since everything is provided by Mark. He really thought of everything to make our stay a relaxing one. All in all, our week in Rodanthe was a wonderful and relaxing vacation. Most enjoyable were the sunsets as viewed from the balcony off the kitchen. If you're looking for a house, believe us, this is the one.........Loved it !!

Wonderful location right on the sound and nicely appointed home!

Loved it! From the clean sheets and towels provided and the lovely condition of this home to the bikes, kayaks and paddle boards. A wonderful place to spend an 80th birthday celebration with three generations of family!

Located on the Sound side of highway 12 with private Sound access for water sports. Preimier spot for Kiteboarding and Windsurfing, both on the Sound or Ocean. Short walk / bike ride / or car ride (200 yards at most) to Ocean beach. No dunes to walk over, paved road directly to the sandy beach. A public ocean beach park is just one half mile south with plenty of parking, restrooms, and showers.
