Our country home is situated on 11.5 private acres of foothill countryside. Gorgeous in any season, you will cool off in the pool from Memorial Day through September, and warm up in the outdoor covered hot tub (on the deck right outside the master bedroom,) any time, even in the rain. There is Dish TV/DVD/VCR in the master bedroom and the downstairs family room. The family room also has ping pong, a Kareoke machine, many games and puzzles, and an extra optional queen Aerobed.
On the main floor are the master suite with a king bed, and another bedroom with a queen bed and a small TV showing only videos - with videos suitable for children. The great room, with wood burning stove is comfortable for gathering all the guests. The kitchen, well stocked for the cook, will allow you to provide impressive meals. Downstairs, are two more bedrooms, a bathroom, and the family room. The larger downstairs bedroom has a king bed, a Captain's twin bed and another optional twin mattress can be set up on the floor. The smaller downstairs bedroom has a double bed.
Outside the master bedroom and the great room is a very large deck with hot tub, wrought iron table and chairs, Adirondack chairs, and gas grill. On the lower deck, there is a shaded swing chair outside the large bedroom door perfect for a peaceful morning cup of coffee and a book. Nighttime stargazing is spectacular especially when you lie on the foam mats located in the great room. A large fenced-in area adjacent to the house can be used for a dog run; but in the dry seasons, you must be careful about burs and foxtails. Also outside, are 3 flat camping platforms and a tree house for those who want to get even closer to nature for sleeping, drawing, or meditation.
Access to the property is at the end of a private road. The last .8 mile is a gravel and then dirt road. One must go slowly on this part of the drive, but my car is a Prius and I've had no problems with it due to the road. Because it can be tricky to find, my property manager will meet you at a convenient spot several miles away, shepherd you into the property and acquaint you with the house. You will feel very much in the country at the house. The closest neighbor has horses, a donkey, and a peacock. Although the feeling there is very rural and unmanicured, you are only about 10 minutes from convenience stores in Diamond Springs or Somerset, and about 15-20 minutes to supermarkets, a movie theater, and the center of Placerville.
If you visit for just a weekend you probably won't want to leave, but if you do, or are here for longer, try wine tasting in the town of Fair Play, the October Apple Hill festival 30 minutes away in Camino, white water rafting from Coloma, hiking to the Cosumnes River Gorge, or sledding in winter near Sly Lake. (We rarely have snow here, but driving only 15 minutes will provide fun in the snow in the winter.)
- $250/night base rate for 1 bedroom + $35/each extra bedroom or each extra 1-2 people up to $390/night, as when the family room is used as an extra bedroom with the Queen Aerobed. For stays of 5+ nights the daily rate will be discounted, with deeper discounts the more nights you rent.
- 2 night minimum except June - August and holidays when there is a 4-5 night minimum.
- The minimum rate is $250/night, even if you use only 1 bedroom.
- Discounted rate for 5+ nights using all bedrooms
- Other regular charges are: $190 cleaning fee, $50/dog for whole stay, and 10% El Dorado County Occupancy Tax. Refundable security deposit of $500 is required.
My family has owned this piece of Paradise since our 20-something younger son was an 8 year old boy. We are SF Bay Area city folk, but here is where he was able to learn about the joy of nature, stillness and quiet. We’ve had as many as 4 families here are a time. (That’s too many, but 2 is perfect.) Two to three couples works well. I’ve hosted several different women’s music group retreats and I have to say that making harmony in the tree-house was one of my life’s highlights.
I used to call this place Camp David because this was the place we could bring our severely disabled and medically fragile older son David to care for him on weekends and truly find peaceful, relaxed, close family time together. Since David’s death, this is where I feel his spirit asking us to slow down and rest, read, wonder and remember the simple joys of laughter, connection, and reflection.
When David was a few years old and my younger son was a babe in arms, I undertook a year long project with a group to make a sculpture to help me move through my process as a mother of a severely disabled child. My sculpture sits in one corner of the living room near the hearth. She is a not quite life sized nursing mother (me) with the 'shadow' of David on my shoulder. One renter found this too emotionally intense while others have told me it enhanced their experience. (see the photo of the wood burning stove with her in the corner.) If you think this will disturb your stay, please don't rent with me.
I am taking a leap of faith that I can find renters who will respect this place and treat it as they would their own home. I hope it will help you renew your soul as it does mine.
Edie Reba Murphy purchased this house in 2000
As I drive to Lofty Haven from the density of Oakland (2.25 hours when traffic is flowing – talk to me about the right times to leave to minimize traffic), I begin to feel all my cells expanding as I pass through El Dorado. Once I arrive, the privacy, country sounds and spectacular view from the deck including graceful birds with large wingspans, allow my eyes to shift to distance viewing and my nervous system to calm me to the core.
Even in the house, which is about 3000 sq. ft., each bedroom is separated allowing for privacy when wanted. The large common spaces are large enough for groups to come together comfortably. We’ve had kids & teens birthday party weekends which easily provide adults and kids their own spaces.
On the lower deck there is a shaded swing chair perfect for a peaceful morning cup of coffee and a book. Also on the lower deck is an outdoor shower. Good morning Edie! We are back, and already sorry that we didn't get to stay longer. We all agreed, your home in Placerville, was AMAZING!!!! We had all looked at the pictures, and sad to say, we have been led to believe other properties were amazing, only to find the pictures were cleverly taken to highlight that which wasn't really that large, it just looked that way in the pictures. We were blown away when we arrived, and all felt your mountain home was so much more than we all expected. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
We all sat around Saturday morning, in the living room, and just did not feel any ambition to move, and it was okay! The peace felt there was surround and comforting, like your first feel of flannel sheets when the weather turns cold. We started to feel the same again, on Sunday morning, and all came to the realization, at pretty much the same time, that we would need to get out very shortly, sad to say.
In our 36 years of our groups retreat, this has been one of the very best, and we sincerely hope to be back!
Thank you again!!!!!

Thank you again for the peace and rejuvenation!
We really enjoyed our multi-family getaway in the hills. It was a very manageable drive from the Bay Area, yet the isolation and serenity made us feel like we were much, much farther area. The kitchen was equipped and we really liked the several large places for everyone to gather, either poolside, comfortably in the living room or on the large deck with outside chairs, table, hot tub and view. The kids loved the surrounding woods and the playhouse on the property (or at least, they thought it was a playhouse!)
The only negatives are that payment was more difficult (checks, card, etc.) than I thought and the pool is down the stairs from the main entertaining area, which took some management with the kids.
Thank you for having us in your home. All in all -- a great weekend!
Awesome hse for our wedding group. What a surprise when we found the wedding would be at the fausel ranch at the bottom of the hill. The house suited our diverse group of 4 to 75 yr Olds beautifully. Master on entry level very comfy. Mattress was perfect for my fibro muscles. Htub greatly enjoyed by all. Wildlife amazing. This hse could not have suited our needs better. So nice to b in the woods with nature and silence. Thank you for seeing to whatever we needed. Our wedding vacation was perfect.
We just came home yesterday after 3 nights at the Lofty Haven. We met up with several friends there for a fun passport weekend.
We were one of those cars that came later to the house and our gps wanted us to turn around and we did so at the house just before the lofty haven (with the emu's and horses...) - drove all the way back down and went down raccoon - then called our friend. It is a good story to tell...so close - but yet so far. It is a bumpy road but we made it, no problem. Several of the guests had small cars and they made it up the road as well.
Once we arrived, all was great. Plenty of space for the 12 of us... The deck was amazing with a hot tub with a view. The pool was chilly - but that did not stop us from trying it out.
The oven cooks unevenly/slower than expected. What should have taken 15 minutes to warm up took 30 minutes...other than that the kitchen has plenty of dishes. I did miss the glassware - but can totally relate having a pool and hot tub myself.
I came to work today and told my friends we need to reserve the house!
This was a wonderful spot for a group of women to hang out, eat, talk and relax for the weekend. The view is indeed stunning, the hot tub is hot, the beds are super comfortable and the layout is good for visiting. We were able to accommodate everyone in their own sleeping space through a combination of renting the air bed and bringing a foam mattress, which was nice for 10 independent women. We left our pets at home, but it would be a great spot for pets as well. The property manager was exceptionally nice and even brought flowers, balloons and chocolate for my birthday.
It was good to feel like we were away from it all yet not have to drive very far off the beaten path. Those who arrive first and are escorted by the manager will want to give late arrivers clear driving instructions and put out markers to help guide them to the house, especially if it's after dark.
We stayed in for all meals but one because it was easy to cook there, and we took a drive to a couple of wineries close by - maybe 15 minutes. Gorgeous drive after the storm, and a very pleasant tasting experience.
A couple of not-so-great things -- the house is in wine country, but there was no stemware for drinking wine. The owner informed me she has now stocked plastic stemware. Also there is an emotionally intense piece of art in the living room that the owner will make you aware of. It's not obscene or offensive, but it made some of my guests uncomfortable.
Overall we had a great time and made some wonderful memories.
About half way between Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe, we are about twenty minutes from the Fairplay area Wineries. (I'll let you know my favorites if you ask.)
Apple Hill in Camino, is about a half hour away. Their yummy Harvest festival is in October. Whitewater rafting trips on the south fork of the American river are available in season from Coloma, which is about 35 minutes away.
About 20 minutes from here there is a spectacular hike into a portion of the Cosumnes river where rock climbers come to climb up a sheer face. Placerville's Oldtown, known in the gold rush days as 'Hangtown,' is loaded with loaded with restaurants, shops, and antiques.
