About Sandra Skrei
I have asked a long time friend, Sandy, to help High Hope Ranch become a sustainable operation with the long term goal of preserving the land for wildlife and open space. She is who you'll meet when you inquire about our houses and arrive to check in, then we respect your privacy. It's not about us, though! It's about this place and our neighbors, Fossil Rim! We have a great community of people who live on property year round and part time, any of which may be on hand to greet you! Two are former Fossil Rim educators, 1 is a sculptor, and another is a designer and sought after house/pet sitter!
Sandra Skrei purchased this Chateau / Country House in 1994
Why Sandra Skrei chose Glen Rose
We bought this ranch because we love Fossil Rim! Before we donated Fossil Rim to the nonprofit that manages it, Fossil Rim and High Hope were both owned by High Hope's owner, Krystyna. It's more than being able to dash to Fossil Rim's Overlook for a quick look at the giraffes (which we occasionally see along our mutual fence line), grab a bite to eat, buy a gift or visit their contact animal area. It goes beyond hearing the wolves at night. We are also giving them an 1,125 acre gorgeous buffer against development. Combine this with the organic beauty of the land, the opportunity to develop trails and respite spots on an area that is often covered in bluebonnets and other wildflowers, we count ourselves lucky indeed to live here. It is our pleasure to share this special beauty and serenity with all of our guests!
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
We welcome you and encourage you to feel as though you were visiting the family ranch! This is your chance to capture the feeling of going back to a special time when our connections were with the land and each other instead of our phones and computers! How often can you let kids play outside alone! When was the last time you wandered in wonder? How often can you roam trails without running into other people? We offer a combination of a ranch and wilderness experience with three great houses to choose from!

We had a great time in this amazing ranch, we could not have found better place to spend a long weekend. The house is perfect for a family with 3 kids, and has everything you need.
There are several trails to walk and enjoy the views, the environment, watching birds...we were lucky enough to visit during bluebonnet season. Flowers were so beautiful!
Our 3 kids were happy to feed the goats, they would not have missed it! They already asked when we would go back. Their favorite place was goat cave, but enjoyed a lot fossil search as well. Dinosaur Valley is close and Safari park `s entrance is just 5 minutes, but this ranch offers so much, you don` t need to leave at all.
We will definitely come back!
It makes my heart soar to see reviews, especially from families who have the time to both explore High Hope and visit what makes Glen Rose so unique, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and Dinosaur Valley State Park! I do hope to see you back soon!
Awesome Family Getaway
Kasa Casa is a beautiful, clean, lovingly decorated, and excellently managed guest house. We appreciated Sandra's hospitality and the amenities and information available. (Hot tub! Sauna! Board games! Puzzles! Kitchen supplies! And more!)
We enjoyed a hike with the kids, checking out the fascinating features of the property, like the stone circle and goat cave. The kids had fun feeding the goats. I enjoyed coffee and a book out on the porch with a beautiful view before me. There was so much to do, all of it relaxing and refreshing.
We are already talking about coming back with more family members in the future. The proximity to Fossil Rim and Dinosaur State Park is incredible!
Thank you Matthew and family!
Do come back! I was just wondering if anybody ever used the puzzles and board games (something I grew up on as special family together time!). Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed them!
Hopefully you can find a time when you can have an early check in and late check out!
Return to nature!
This unique and special home was a perfect spot for our family to unplug and spend time together. We enjoyed hiking throughout the property, treasured our encounters with wildlife and can not wait to return! This is such a special place maintained by very special people
A great family getaway!
The High Hope ranch family was friendly, welcoming and very accommodating. We had a large family gathering and booked Habari & Kasa Casa. It was everything that we had hoped for. There is something for everyone. If you want to just relax in comfort, away from the hustle and bustle, it is perfect for that. If you want to go hiking, see wildlife and discover really cool fossils, it is perfect for that (I definitely recommend going down through Goat Cave and down the Woods Trail). If you want to read books or play games, the houses are stocked with plenty of both. The ranch is just a few minutes away from the entrance to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center which boasts over 50 different species of wildlife from around the world (if you have never seen a baby giraffe running around on awkward and wobbly legs, you need to go). I would definitely recommend the High Hope Ranch, and you would be hard-pressed to find a better group of people to work with. My family will definitely be returning.
We chose to stay here for a birthday "vacay" for our five year old son, along with our sever year old daughter. It was an absolutely perfect balance of relaxation and exploration. You truly have to see the property and the land to appreciate its beauty. Sandra was an incredible host-I cannot emphasize that enough! She did a fun safety pledge with the kids, helped us map out trails to explore, and did everything to help us make the most of our stay. We all cannot wait to return!
And thank you again! Wish your kids had more than one birthday a year!!!!! Sandra
The house, the ranch and everyone involved with the property are absolutely amazing. If you are looking for a perfect spot to relax and enjoy nature you cannot find a more appropriate location. We highly recommend for a romantic or family escape. The house is all the amenities you could ask for and beautifully decorated. The outside porches and sundecks are great for enjoying the fresh air and star gazing. There are plenty of trails / ranch roads to explore. Fossil Rim Wildlife Refuge is just moments away (the property adjoins the Refuge) and has an incredible amount of wildlife to enjoy. The property team are amazing and extremely accommodating.
My only issue with rating this property as highly as it deserves to be is that we want to return again soon and I don't want others to discover this hidden gem!!! :-) Seriously a perfect 10!! You will not regret booking this property!
We are on one of the highest points in Somervell County, where the hill country meets the great plains. We sit on the northernmost foothills of the Hill Country, so you’ll find several steep ravines and canyons cutting through the property. Our limestone hills and fields are full of fossils, but you’ll have to go to the state park to see dinosaur tracks! During good bluebonnet years, our fields look like large, deep blue lakes! Our walking trails take you to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center's fences. Most people don't want to leave when they get to the ranch, our houses have notebooks with information on local attractions like Fossil Rim, Dinosaur Valley State Park, Glen Rose's Historic Square and other nearby small towns.
We share a fence line with Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, we've seen giraffe and heard wolves at night along our trails. We are twelve minutes from Glen Rose's other incredible family attractions: The Paluxy River Walk and Park, Dinosaur Valley State Park, Dinosaur World, Brazos River, Historic Courthouse Square, Barnard's Mill and Art Museum. One of the state's best pie shops is on the historic town square, along with galleries, antiques, restaurants, gift shops and a weekend farmers market. There are nearby wineries (Barking Rocks Winery, Red Caboose Winery) and chocolate factories, too. Most people stay on property, but there is plenty to do within a 35 mile drive!
Common Ranch Activities:
Some people can't get away from the porch, out of the built in hot tub, or off the “sunshine deck while enjoying quiet activities such as reading, writing, watching the scenery, wildlife and sky. Others roam our 1,125 acres for photography and connecting with nature. Bird watching and casual to strenuous hiking are favorites. Multiple trails wander through woods, pocket prairies, fields and steep ravines frequented by a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, bobwhite, turkey, fox, bobcat, armadillo, raccoon, and rabbits. Game cameras have captured ring-tails and porcupine at Goat Cave. We have Golden-cheeked Warblers and Black-capped vireos, Painted Buntings and lots of other beautiful birds. Kasa Casa is about ½ mile from our barn area, guests often help feed our goats, donkey, horses and chickens. Panoramic views and forever horizons set the scene to include gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. The night sky, still not clouded by city lights, allows for astronomical views into space with views of multiple stars, planets, formations, satellites, and meteors.
