About Lisa Martin-Eatinger

I grew up in Iowa near here and enjoyed the family picnics at the state park. My extended family is still in the area! We now live in downtown Chicago, and this retreat is a great escape from our hectic lives.

Why Lisa Martin-Eatinger chose Solon

My family has been enjoying Lake MacBride since it first opened. My grandmother told me about her experiences growing up and enjoying the lake so she made sure to bring her children. My mother has great stories of Lake MacBride and the Coralville Reservoir and she made sure to bring me and my brothers! Now a fourth generation, my own daughters, are growing up with peace and tranquility because of this fabulous property.

What makes this house unique

We are next to cross-country ski and snowmobile trails!

Perfect Family Vacation - hoping to come back in a couple years.

  • 5 of 5

My family of 9 adults and 2 kids (2 and 4) spent 5 nights at the Lake MacBride Cabin in July. My adult daughters live in Des Moines, Davenport, Chicago and one by us in the Twin City area. We chose this cabin for central location but were pleasantly surprised by how many things there were to do here.

The cabin itself was set up so the family with 2 kids could enjoy the upstairs suite, my husband and I (and 4 year old granddaughter most nights) enjoyed the king bed on the main floor, and the rest of the young adults shared the lower level. Since the average temp that weekend was 93 degrees, we were very impressed how the air conditioning kept us very comfortable, and the 3 large bathrooms were definitely a plus. The deck was large enough for all us to enjoy our evening outdoors. The kids loved the playhouse!

Everything was very clean and well stocked with towels, utensils, etc. and a washer and dryer.

We enjoyed the public beach daily (only a mile away), rented a pontoon one day and a speed boat with skis one afternoon. We spent a few hours with the kids down at the beach at the end of the wooded path one day. We saw a few bunnies and even a deer in our back yard. We also took advantage of the bike trail, a few of the parks for the kids, the Iowa City Children's Museum only 15 minutes away, the Amana Colonies (20 minutes away) and loved the local brewery in Solon (5 miles away) a couple times. We were even impressed with the great participation in the local Catholic Church in Solon.

We hope to return to this beautiful spot again. The owners were great to work with.

Nice cabin, great location!

  • 4 of 5

Enjoyed the short walk to the lake the first morning, lake was peaceful. Spacious cabin for 8 adults to spread out, greatly appreciated dog friendly cabin. Kitchen offered room for all to gather and the pots/pans/dishes well stocked. Lisa very promptly responded to all messages. Enjoyed kayaking at Lake McBride and good restaurants in Solon. Convenient location.

Fun place for a family gathering

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at Lisa's cabin. It was big enough for our group that included up to 10 people sleeping overnight and more getting together during the day. It was a steamy hot weekend but the house was cool and the deck had some shade and a breeze almost all the time. The big group was better gathered outside than in for space, but when we needed to get out of the heat it was doable. The kids really enjoyed walking down to the lake on the trail, and spending time at the beach areas down there. It got really busy with boats on such a hot summer weekend but in the morning we had a space to ourselves. The kitchen had everything we needed. Bedrooms were comfortable enough (maybe some bedside tables would be nice? previous review also noted there is no usable lamp in upstairs bedroom). As people have mentioned and in the description, the stairs are potentially an issue with small children and older people. We had both, and managed ok but needed to supervise and help the less mobile ones negotiate from the driveway up to the house (where they can then stay on the main floor). Overall, we felt like we knew what we were getting and and were really pleased.

I really enjoyed the area - it's quick ride down to the boat rental place where a couple of us rented stand-up paddle boards to try out (they also have rental kayaks, canoes and pedal boats) and swam at the beach there. There were kayaks with the house but we were daunted by hauling them down to the water (well really it was back up that we didn't relish) in the 95 degree heat. There was also nearby access to some trails for running and biking. We had a group go golfing nearby also. Easy drive into Solon for some restaurants and anything you need to pick up. The weekend had plenty of entertainment for everyone.

We would rent it again - great fun!

Owner's Response: I'll be there next week to replace the lamp upstairs. As you can see it was BRAND NEW but someone took part of the cord that plugs into the wall! I've tried to find a cord replacement part but after multiple attempts, I give up! So strange the cord part went!
