1 Bdr/2 Bath + loft surrounded by Coronado National Forest. Walk to trailheads.
Fully Furnished 1 Bdr/2 Bath + loft in Madera Canyon surrounded by the Coronado National Forest. Fabulous porch with swing, glider and room to feed the whole family while watching hummingbirds at your feeder. One of a kind woodwork 'makes' this home. 1326 sf of indoor living space. Central AC/heat. Full kitchen, laundry in basement. Property is walking distance to trailheads, picnic areas and favorite birdwatching spots. It all adds up to the best place for an extended stay in Madera Canyon.
Please note: There is no TV reception (we do have a dvd player). Metered Satellite Internet is provided (but not unlimited). This is a remote property. Your cell phone will have limited connectivity in the canyon (Verizon works best). There is a landline in the cabin. While there are two gift stores in the canyon, the next closest businesses are 15 miles away. I recommend you get gas and stop at the grocery store before you drive into the canyon. Don't forget to buy a bag of sugar to make syrup to feed the hummingbirds!

About Molly Elliott
I spent summers in Tucson, Arizona with my grandparents as a little girl. They had a small cabin in Madera Canyon - one of only a handful of private homes - and my sister and I loved going there on the weekends and playing in the creek or hiking the trail to Mt. Wrightson. As an adult I have returned to visit my grandparents many times with my children to introduce them to the jewel that is Madera Canyon. The photo is of my grandfather blowing bubbles with my daughter off the edge of the porch.
Molly Elliott purchased this House in 1990
Why Molly Elliott chose Santa Cruz County
In 1990 my grandparents built the current home which they nicknamed Hummingbird Hill. It sits at a high spot in the canyon which lends itself to beautiful mountain views, sunsets and hummingbird watching. It was their dream retirement home. I have recently inherited it and can't bear to part with it - not only because of the memories but also because of the unique building and location. My husband and I are not able to move to the canyon right now as we have jobs out of state, but hope it can become our dream retirement home as well.
What makes this House unique
The home itself was custom built by Richard Lansky. You won't believe the detailed woodworking. Take a careful look at the photo gallery. Richard still lives in the canyon and helps me with maintenance. The location is also amazing. Madera Canyon is a natural gem and it is minimally developed so you will have tons of opportunities to enjoy nature. The cabin is on private property but borders Coronado National Forest land on all sides. There are a handful of residents in the canyon and it is a popular weekend spot for people from Tucson so you will not be completely alone, but there's still plenty of space for solitude. I love some of the local businesses that rent out by the night, but this is truly the best place for an extended stay as it has a fully equipped kitchen and laundry facility.

The very best of Madera Canyon
Madera Canyon is one of the most amazing places for birds and wildlife you'll never see anywhere else. Hummingbird Hill is absolutely the best place to stay in this unique environment. The owners provided feeders that brought in an array of birds that fascinated and amazed us. 5 types of hummingbirds came, with big numbers of magnificent hummers our constant companions from morning to night. Many other birds too countless to mention here also came. The view from the ample porch is absolutely inspiring -- we would eat every night outside and just take it all in. The house itself is a masterpiece of woodworking and unique design. We marveled at the painstaking work done inside and out by a craftsman who still lives in the canyon. And the animals -- anyone who hasn't seen a coatimundi or ring-tailed cat should stay at Hummingbird Hill because they're there. I can't imagine a better place to experience the magic of Madera Canyon than this wonderful place, so full of family history and with so many places to explore. It's the last cabin in the canyon, right at the trailheads for the major trails. You can hike Madera without getting in a car. Our month at Hummingbird Hill was a rich and enjoyable experience that we'll never forget. We give it our highest recommendation. Cheers, Rick
I'm so glad you had a fabulous trip, Rick. Thanks for the great review!
To future guests, be sure to check out the lists of birds and other wildlife provided by the Friends of Madera Canyon. They break it down by season so you can better know what to expect. March (when Rick stayed) through May is the height of the Hummingbird season. We have a few that stay year round too.
If I could live here for months at a time, I would. Hummingbird Hill is a real vacation home - peaceful and beautiful. We explored the hundreds of CDs in the collection there, and played a few new games. Hiking and bird watching filled our days, along with trips down the Canyon to cycle in Green Valley. Everything you need for a unique vacation is here.
High in the sky.
Wonderful panoramic view of Madera Canyon.
Weather was very nice. We hit a warm spell, so highs were in the high 60s. Nights stayed above freezing. Very nice well built cabin. Could not ask for more. Enjoyed the birds and the pesky Coatimundi, who would show up from time to time trying to empty the bird feeders. Easily could be run off when need be. Thanks and will book again.
Great weather while we were here so we enjoyed the Madera Canyon hikes immensely.
Very comfortable, rustic and scenic. The driveway has been recently paved so absolutely no problem coming and going with Honda Odyssey. It is no inconvenience having Green Valley a 15-20 minute drive away since is a very scenic drive. We hope to return next year since we imagine it will be hard to find another rural rental providing an equal experience.
It was fantastic
I have never seen such beautiful craftsmanship in the wood work any where. There was lots of space and everything you could possibly need
Madera Canyon is nestled in the northern slopes of the Santa Rita Mountain range east of Green Valley and south of Tucson, Arizona. The flora along with the streams that carved out this canyon help to sustain the many bird, mammal, and insect species that breed and visit here. Visitors from all over the world arrive in search of such avian specialties as the Elegant Trogon, Elf Owl, Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher, and Painted Redstart. Over 230 species of birds have been recorded in the Canyon with 15 hummingbird species among them.
Thousands of birders, hikers, photographers, artists, and those simply seeking a place to enjoy a picnic under the shade of a sycamore tree—next to the cool water of a creek—have fallen in love with Madera Canyon.
