About Sandra

I am a long time resident of Hawaii, a Pediatrician, with a love for the tropics, Paddling and all that Hawaii has to offer. I moved to Connecticut so my girls could go to better schools and I hope to retire in Kona some day in my empty nest years.

Sandra purchased this house in 1988

Why Sandra chose Kailua-Kona

This property is ideally suited for living a Tropical Lifestyle as well as being close to medical facilities, fine restaurants, shopping and lots of water activities. From here you can take long beautiful walks by the water, walk to a Farmers Market, to the movies or to go Golfing.

What makes this house unique

As soon as you walk through the front door you will see why I fell in love with this house. The ocean breeze, the warm balmy nights, the proximity to fun, food and frolicking all caught my fancy and I had to buy it. This was 25 years ago .... you might say, it's a keeper.

A lot of good with a little updating needed

  • 3 of 5

We just came back from an 10 day stay at this house. The outdoor space here is excellent. We enjoyed every morning and every evening on the large upstairs lanai. Lots of seating and a nice table to eat at while you watch the sunset. The kitchen is updated and well equipped. There is also a good size BBQ just adjacent to the pool which was nice to have when we were eating in. All the appliances in the house were good quality and in good working order. The upstairs bedroom is updated with lots of closet space and a large clean/updated bathroom. We give the upstairs a 4.5 star rating.

The downstairs part of the house needs quite a bit of updating. We would rate this a 2 star in comparison to other properties we have stayed at. This is the reason overall we gave the property a total 3 star rating. The basement is spacious and has a separate room for laundry and a bathroom. The bathroom sink area is nice however the bath/shower needs replacing. We have given the manager our feedback and they mentioned they would be making some updates soon. The basement windows let in a lot of fly's and gecko's which leads to a lot of cleanup every morning - the manager mentioned these would be changed in the near future. The upstairs sleeps 2 in the master and the basement has a queen and two singles. There is a futon downstairs but it isn't really in a "bedroom" ~ it is situated in the open area downstairs - ok for little kids I suppose if you needed the extra bed. Pool was nice to have for days when you are hanging around the house. There are lounge chairs and a nice little table and chairs set around the pool with an umbrella.

The ocean view is gorgeous and the small black rock beach next to the house is a great place for snorkeling. The neighborhood felt safe and not overly busy with traffic. The mall up the road was nice for quick grocery trips. The home managers were quick to address any issues while we were onsite by just sending them an email. Overall it was a nice stay and the location was a great place to come back to for relaxation time.

Beautiful location, house needs a lot of TLC

  • 2 of 5

The view, the pool, the balcony and the landscaping were beautiful and are the highlights of the house. The location was excellent and all the extras like sand and water toys being available were great. The house was well stocked and had a great open concept on the main floor.

There were many negatives about the house as well. The house is old and shabby. The house was dirty with feces of small animals in all the window areas, there were hundreds of dead bugs throughout the house especially the closests, there were dirty foot prints in the downstairs bathroom, nail clippings left behind in the master and filth left on the walls and under the beds. Unfortunately I can not load the pictures which I took with this review. The fourth room is hardly a room, its a small space shared with the 3rd room divided by a thin screen giving no privacy. These two rooms have no AC and were so hot some guests opted to sleep outside and get bitten by bugs. A much better alternative. The twin beds and futon are exceptionally uncomfortable, my mother had back pains the entire trip even with using the extra foamies provided for persons 9 and 10 (laughable that these were considered extra beds). The most troubling part is that the house was very unsafe for young children. The master balcony was decaying and when my 15 month daughter pulled on a spoke if pulled right out. Thank God I was there with her because it was a 12ft fall onto concrete below. The stairs inside the house don't have railings for the first 2 stairs, the outside stairs leading to the deck have openings so large between the stairs a baby could fall threw them and the railings around the balcony are very low.

We loved the pool, loved the location and loved the extras left behind by various guests but would never stay there again. Bathrooms are quite disgusting especially the one downstairs and we just left very unimpressed and unhappy with the home. Kona is amazing and we will be back, but will stay in a hotel where pictures arent misleading, descriptions aren't elaborated on and complaints are dealt with by managers not simply brushed aside like they were here.

Owners please spend some money and upgrade the home and the old shabby furnishings. Please clean the house properly for future guests and please check the balconies and railings, there could have been a serious if not fatal accident.

Owner's Response: Aloha Deborah, Thank you for your feedback. We are always looking for ways to improve the experience for travelers and we appreciate your perspective. This house is set up for 8 in beds and 2 additional futons for children or the extra large sofa in the living room can be used for sleeping. However, when guests, sneak in more people than they've signed up for, there will be awkwardness. Sorry for your discomfort but there is a reason we limit the number of guests to 10.

Well equipped lovely home in a great location!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for a little less than a week and really enjoyed the great location where we could see and hear the ocean! There is beach access adjacent to the house but it is more of a surfing access / crashing waves sort of beach. The Lanai is a spectacular spot to relax and the kitchen is well equipped for cooking meals. Everyone enjoyed the pool and the house is situated close to nearby beaches, resorts and shopping. Sandra was great to deal with and was even able to work out a late check out arrangement for us. 2 of the 3 bedrooms are air conditioned, so the house can get a little hot especially if you're cooking and there is no breeze. A car is also essential. Overall, however, it is a wonderful home and worked great for our group of 5.

Amazing Oceanfront Pool House!

  • 5 of 5

Sandra's home was the perfect place for our trip to Kona. Spacious, clean, breezy and so comfortable. Huge master bathroom with views of the ocean from the spa tub. Great pool & hot tub, complete with all the toys. Private beach just steps from house in the most beautiful rocky lagoon setting. Highly recommend if you have a big crew! Kid friendly, quiet, safe...thank you again Sandra we loved your place and hope to return next year!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write up a review. Since your stay we have continued to make a great house even better. We've added a lighted walkway from the parking and landscaped with a lot of new beautiful flowers and bushes. We look forward to your return.
