About the host
Hosted by Danah Malone
Like many people, I love to travel and have an endless curiosity about the world. I’m always learning, exploring new ideas, and wishing there were more hours in the day to pursue everything that inspires me. Interior design is a longtime passion of mine (very much a hobby), because I truly believe our surroundings affect how we feel. I love being surrounded by beautiful, thoughtful spaces.
Although most people wouldn’t guess it, I’m actually a big introvert, and home is my favorite place to be. Because I travel often, I’m always inspired by unique places I stay along the way, and I try to bring those ideas back home. Many of the conveniences and design touches in this property are inspired by things I’ve experienced elsewhere and wanted to recreate.
Nature brings me a lot of peace — especially in the spring. I love the sound of bamboo swaying, birds in the trees, and rain on the roof during a storm. At night, I can spend hours stargazing, which is why outdoor living was such an important part of designing this home. My goal as a host is to create a space that feels calming, intentional, and a little bit like being on vacation — even when you’re just staying in.

Why they chose this property
I’m not originally from Gentilly, but owning, renovating, and spending real time here has made me fall in love with the neighborhood. One of the first things I noticed was how genuinely friendly and welcoming the neighbors are — something that felt refreshing and authentic. It’s the kind of place where people really stop to talk, not just acknowledge each other out of politeness.
I love walking through Gentilly and seeing the variety of homes, meeting interesting people, and feeling a true sense of community. It’s also incredibly central, which makes getting around New Orleans easy while still feeling peaceful and residential.
Gentilly truly shines in the spring. The crepe myrtles begin to bloom, and the oak trees along Franklin Avenue create a beautiful canopy of shade that’s perfect for evening walks. It’s one of the most quietly beautiful neighborhoods in the city, and it offers a balance of calm, character, and connection that’s hard to find.

What makes this property unique
This home was designed with intention, creativity, and a strong connection to nature. Before the deck was installed, the outdoor space was unusable — too hot, bare, and uninviting. It didn’t feel like a place to relax or escape. That completely changed with the addition of the two-level deck.
The pergola was designed to provide shade from the intense New Orleans summer sun while still allowing warmth and light during cooler fall and winter days. The second, uncovered level was intentionally created for stargazing — so you can look up at the moon, planets, and stars at night without obstruction.
Inside, the home reflects a balance of comfort, thoughtful design, and practical living. Many of the features and conveniences were inspired by memorable stays in other unique places and reimagined here to create a space that feels calm, welcoming, and lived-in — not generic. It’s a home that encourages you to slow down, enjoy your surroundings, and truly settle in.
