About this property
Super-Comfortable House on Super-Clean Sunset Lake
Our house sits on a half-acre lot located on a quiet street that rings 65-acre Sunset Lake. At 55 feet, this NO-WAKE lake is one of the deepest in Portage County, and the water quality is excellent. (Note that our Sunset Lake is not the lake with the same name located in the Chain of Lakes. However, from our house it's only a half-hour drive to the Chain of Lakes.)
The split-level, 1,900 sq-ft house is cozy and comfortable. A primary bedroom, smaller bedroom, and a bathroom are located on the top level. (One room on this level is not available to guests.) A sitting area with a couch and foosball table, and a bedroom and bath are located on the lowest level. (The fireplace on the lowest level is not available for use.) On the main level are the dining area, living room, kitchen, and laundry room with washer and dryer. The kitchen is fully equipped, including stove/oven, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, cooking pots and utensils, and dishware. Bath towels and bed linens are supplied. There is an attached 2-car garage, central heating and central air, WiFi, Smart TV, and local and long-distance phone service.
From the dining area, step onto the large deck ready for outdoor cooking (propane-tank grill) and eating (deck set of table and benches). The deck looks onto a yard with mature trees that slopes down to 100 feet of lakefront. (The yard can be reached by going down stairs from the deck, or by walking on either side of the house.) An aluminum dock at shore level is in place from approximately April through October -- no stairs to climb to get onto the dock. Swim off the dock. You can get into the water from the shore (although the bottom isn't sandy) to the right of the dock. The shoreline to the left of the dock is in its natural state, as mandated by Portage County. There's good fishing, including walleye, panfish, bluegill, and trout. A fire pit is in the back yard. (Note that, per State regulations, due to oak wilt and pests, firewood from a source farther than 20 miles from our house can't be brought in. You can buy firewood from our manager at a reasonable price.)
SUMMER: Enjoy swimming (either off our dock, or at the sandy beach at the county park across the lake located a few minutes' drive or 15-minute walk from our house), fishing, canoeing, kayaking, standup paddleboarding, and small-boat sailing on this no-wake lake.
LATE SPRING, SUMMER, AND FALL: RIDE BIKES -- on the low-traffic roads in the area. HIKE -- on trails in the area, including the Ice Age Trail, located at the New Hope Iola Ski Hill (about 5 miles from our house). You can also ride bikes and hike on the extensive Green Trail system in Stevens Point, located about 18 minutes from our house; and on the 29-mile Tomorrow River Trail (trailheads located within 10 miles of our house; state pass required for bicycles).
WINTER: CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING-- The Iola Winter Sports Club (open to non-members) is located about 5 miles from our house. SNOWMOBILES-- About one-half mile from our house is a trunk trail that leads to a major snowmobile trail going all the way to Green Bay. (Note that you have to trailer your snowmobile for that half-mile.) SNOWSHOEING-- on the nearby Ice Age Trail and in other close locations. ICE-FISHING-- on Sunset Lake. (Winter accessibility: The house is on a township road that is plowed regularly, and the sidewalk and driveway are cleaned after any substantial snow.)
Please note that NO HUNTING IS PERMITTED ON OUR PROPERTY.
Many annual events are held in the area throughout the year--such as the Iola Car Show in July, the Energy Fair in June, the Iola Winter Carnival in February, the Waupaca Festival of the Arts in August, and the Hidden Studios Art Tour in October. The Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MERA) holds workshops in the area.
Central Waters Brewing Company, located in nearby Amherst, brews a variety of great beers. Great gelato and pizza can be had at The Millstone in nearby Iola (seasonal offerings; please check their website). A list of many other places to eat and drink is found in the guest info folder.
No smoking allowed indoors.
No pets allowed. (We had to change our policy, due to problems with pets not being kept on a leash.)

Sunset Lake is so lovely, the lake is not too big or too small and is very clear. This rental is very comfortable and has everything for an enjoyable stay.
Had another really nice stay on Sunset Lake! 4th or 5th time now. The house, as always, was clean, spacious, well maintained and well appointed. There was a hiccup when we arrived and Susan was on it immediately! A positive experience and I look forward to another visit!
We had stayed here two years ago, and were thrilled that it was available this time! Very relaxing, lots of fishing, took a few walks around the 'hood, spent some time nearby in Stevens Point, saw some fireworks that were on the other side of the lake. All in all, everything was wonderful!
The property is well maintained, with a very good layout, and excellent view. The location is close enough to a few small towns, so going out for meals is very easy. It felt spacious and comfortable. We plan on staying again!
So roomy and clean, the beach across the way was a great place to swim and relax/read. The deck was a great hangout away from bugs. Adding a couple kayaks would be great but overall excellent experience!
A group of middle-aged bicyclists were pleased with the property given it’s amenities and close proximity to the Standing Rocks Mountain Bike Trails we rode during our two night stay. We were also able to enjoy the lake and Central Waters Brewery located nearby.
My wife and our 2 kids had a great week at Sunset lake. Our kids love hanging out at the beach access the lake. The house was clean, and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay.
Enjoyed the quiet and beauty of the area. House was perfects and roomy enough for everyone. Property owner was flexible with check-in given weather delayed my arrival. Would definitely stay again. Thank you for sharing your home!
Susan’s property was super clean, spacious and peaceful! New floors, bathrooms, kitchen, it was all very nice! Outside was peaceful and serene! We will be back! I loved parking in the garage too!
Planned a quick Memorial Day getaway and this was perfect! Great spot on Sunset Lake with great bird sightings (loons, bald eagles, orioles and more). Property was clean and a great space. Kitchen was well stocked. Couldn’t have asked for more. The manager was friendly, helpful, gave us great local ideas and brought over the canoe to use. Would definitely go back!
