About North Pole Nancy Nancy Petersen

I was born in the Alaskan Territory and raised in this area, the daughter of early Alaskan Pioneers. My father is the first civilian to drive the Alaska Highway and he entered Fairbanks in November 1943 after a long trip up the Alcan as it was being built. He met my mother, who was here, working as a flight instructor. The two of them flew, together and separately here in Alaska. Flying became a lifetime venture, with my father, retiring in 1980 after an accident-free career in public air transportation in Alaska airspace. I, myself became a licensed pilot, but opted for a life on the ground, raising my sons and now a grandson. I enjoy earth bound things and am deeply rooted here in the 'frozen north'. As a child, I rode around with my father in a 1925 Model T Ford truck. Even now, it still runs, and I drive it for the enjoyment of the general public. Pictured here is me, and the old truck.

North Pole Nancy Nancy Petersen purchased this cabin in 1999

Why North Pole Nancy Nancy Petersen chose North Pole

I fell in love with this place because it is such a 'retreat' and so 'Alaskan'. I love the log home look and feel, and I enjoy the wooded, private environment here. The water nearby is peaceful and such a great place for the ducks to nest and raise their young. It is a peaceful place to wake up each morning and to go to bed each night. You can hear the birds singing and the chatter of squirrels, and the sounds of nature are not drowned out by the sounds of the nearby highway.

What makes this cabin unique

Available year round with comfort, warmth, privacy, and convenience. Our North Pole Cabin is located in a peaceful setting, great for tourists, and also great for folks working or visiting in the area. We are 9 minutes from the Air Force Base and 20 minutes from the Army Base. We are 7 minutes from the Refinery, and 20 minutes from downtown Fairbanks. If you are WORKING, TOURING, or VISITING FAMILY our North Pole Cabin is a great choice for many reasons, including having a memorable 'cabin experience' in ALASKA!!

The Best Family Vacation EVER!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time to Alaska and we chose to stay at Nancy's cabin. What a find this cabin was!! The view was perfect and the cabin was the ideal size for three adults and one child. We had everything we needed and then some-even saw the Aurora the first night we were there! The beds were super comfortable and the heaters kept us plenty warm, even when surrounded by multiple feet of snow. Nancy had loads of suggestions on places to eat and things to do and her recommendations were spot on! Don't pass up an opportunity to stay here!! This was the trip of a lifetime for us and the memories we made at this cabin will stay with us forever!

Christmas in a Winter Wonderland

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I traveled to the Fairbanks, Alaska area for Christmas through New Year's Eve. We chose to stay at North Pole Cabins, in a cabin surrounded by tall evergreens amidst pretty white snow. The cabin is adorable, and Nancy, the owner, has thought of everything. While the temperature outside was mostly 17 to 20 below zero, there is not a single draft inside the cabin. The heater is very effective, and we were never chilled or uncomfortable inside. The cabin offers a stove, microwave, dishes, refrigerator, toaster, coffee and coffee maker, and even hot chocolate. The bathroom has a tub and shower, and a functional fan. But if the mirror fogs, she even has a squeegee to clean it. Nice towels, soap, shampoo. All amenities. These may sound like little things, but are welcome when staying a ways out of town. The area is "dark" meaning away from town lights, so a quick peak out of the door can tell you if its clear enough to chase auroras. Because of the tall trees, I recommend a short drive to Nordale, then a short drive (north, I think) to a clearing area to see the sky really well. We did not see the Lights, but it was a beautiful view of snow covered trees and many bright stars, all covered in moonshine. Really idyllic. Although the cabin is away from town, Nancy's home is next door which is welcome, as we didn't want to be too far away from resources in the cold. They gave us complete privacy. Basically, our stay was very cozy in the middle of Alaska nature and weather, and we feel we had a very nice Alaskan experience without roughing it too much! Finally, Nancy is a real gem. She immediately recommended several sightseeing options and tips on seeing the aurora, with websites and phone numbers, making it easy for us to make our way around. Nancy was also as accommodating and attentive as they come! Going to Alaska in the dead of winter may seem to be a strange choice for a Christmas vacation, but Alaska is fascinating, and we really loved it!

Comfortable cabin and great owner.

  • 5 of 5

We came to see the Northern lights and we did x 5. Thanks to Nancy we were alerted on two of the occasions to see the lights. We saw them just outside the cabin. Nancy also told us about Chena River Recreation Area which is only a couple of miles away, where we got some amazing pictures. You can use a very expensive camera to capture the amazing lights. OR you can use your IPhone with a free app (Northern Lights) mounted on a tripod and get decent pictures. Chena Recreation area also has miles of bike and hiking trails.

We also explored Fairbanks, Chena Hot Springs and the many beautiful campgrounds along the Chena river.. Saw 4 moose. Took the Train from Fairbanks to Anchorage and what a great experience. The most awesome mountain views were south of Anchorage on the Turnagain Arm. (Mt McKinley was hidden by the clouds). Can't say enough about Nancy's suggestions to enjoy our time in Alaska. She makes a great pork/stuffing roast.!

Nice cabin with a friendly host

  • 4 of 5

The cabin is small but nice, and well furnished. North Pole Nancy was friendly and caring. There was one problem. We reserved the cabin for four nights and on the way there we found out we could only have it for two of the four nights. North Pole Nancy did only charge of half price though and put us up in a nice camper trailer for the first two nights. She did what she could to make things right. The cabin wasn't quite as private as we thought it was going to be as it was only 50 yards from her house. We would stay here again if we were going to the Fairbanks area.

Perfect cabin for playing home base for our Alaskan adventures!

  • 5 of 5

My spouse, myself, and two of our friends stayed in this cozy cabin for four nights in late February, and it was the perfect spot to play home base for our day trip to Denali, to go dog sledding, explore Fairbanks, to visit Chena hot springs, and hunt the Northern Lights.

- Quick drive to shops and dog sledding, but located in a quiet serene area with tranquil surroundings.

- Lots of great recommendations from host Nancy (and specific).

- Responsive and friendly host!

- The cabin was clean, and had just enough of what we needed like coffee, a kettle, 2 reservoirs of water, extra blankets, &c. (as of the writing of this review there was also oatmeal and some cereal).

- Warm indoor bathroom (generally a given, but yes, some other cabins I looked at did not have this).

- Comfy bed, beautiful views out the windows when you wake up.

- The other reviews are right: I was never cold in this cabin, it was very comfortable.

- Wish we'd had a chance to stay longer so we could spend more time in the cabin enjoying the space while I was not asleep.

Minor note: my friends slept in the upper loft area, they may have been slightly perturbed by the steep ladder to get up there, so I put some of the spare pillows just below the ladder. However, seems like they slept fine once they were up there.

I can hardly wait to go back!

MASSAGE THERAPY is available (by appointment).

Now for things to do WINTER OR SUMMER:

Our North Pole Cabin is available year round and a visit to the home of Santa Claus is a 'must-do'. Winter or summer Santa is available at the SANTA CLAUS HOUSE for a visit and/or photos.

The Northern skies offer a chance to see the NORTHERN LIGHTS. We are in a dark area, good for viewing the splendor of the night sky. (Especially good September -April). Should you need to drive to a better viewing location, there are choices nearby within 1-3 miles of our cabin.

CHRISTMAS IN ICE, a December event, is a 'must-do' as well. Here, lovely ice sculptures and slides for the kids will impress you.

Starting in late February and running thru March we have DOG RACES, and an ICE FESTIVAL. Watching the races, keeping track of race times, and seeing the lively dogs in action is entertaining. Observing the stunning ICE SCULPTURES of ICE ALASKA will leave an indelible mark on your memory.

Taking a DOG SLED RIDE could be one of your most interesting choices. There are a variety of choices for meeting dogs and experiencing an authentic dogsled ride. We have personal experiences with some of the local mushers and would be happy to refer you.

SPRINGTIME comes quickly, the snow leaves us, and with the long daylight hours, the grasses and flowers flourish. Everything turns green overnight and by mid-June, all around the cabins, once covered with snow, flowers cascade over the sides of planters, and wild flowers bloom as they so choose.

Our cabin windows are equipped with 'light blocking shades' for your comfort and GOOD SLEEP through the sunny nights of the Land of the Midnight Sun.

SUMMER SOLSTICE is celebrated June 21st and attendance at the MIDNIGHT SUN BALLGAME is a must. $15 for a ticket and you can watch a lively professional ballgame that starts at 10PM and finishes well after midnight on a ball field with no artificial light!

Late July, celebrates the GOLD RUSH and we have a week of games, events, and parade. Our North Pole Cabin is proud to display and drive a 1925 MODEL T FORD. This truck was purchased new and was a work truck for the local gold mining operation. It has been in our family now since 1946 and is 'held together entirely by rust'. But she runs--and has been running around this area and in the local parade every year since 1949. This year will be the the 64th consecutive tour of duty for the ol' girl. Get your picture taken sitting inside the cab or go for a ride if you can.

Drive or ride to THE ARCTIC CIRCLE.

Visit THE KNOTTY SHOP for Alaskan gifts.

Visit THE SCREAMING WEASEL for truly unique gifts.

Sixty (60) miles from our NORTH POLE CABIN site, and an easy DAY TRIP, are HOT SPRINGS (open year round). A visit is worth the drive, and a tour of the ICE MUSEUM will be memorable. Stopping for a HIKE at ANGEL ROCKS is highly recommended (Angel Rock hike is FREE).

DENALI PARK is 150 miles from our NORTH POLE CABIN. This can be a DAY TRIP, but the best advice would be for you to plan to see the park as you come or go during your trip between Anchorage and Fairbanks. Should you want to take a QUICK TRIP to the park, it would be recommended that you at least allow 2 full days. Drive down one day and start your explorations, overnight there at the park, and continue with a big day exploring, with a late night return to our area. (Better yet, choose to return on the 3rd day of your DENALI PARK adventure).

SANTA CLAUS himself has stayed right here at our NORTH POLE CABIN, as is pictured on our website during one of his visits. This year, he is retreating with us for the whole summer, and he may be seen mowing the lawn or watering flowers. (He may or may not be wearing his red suit, but you can ask to see his drivers license, and sure enough he is the REAL McCOY--SANTA CLAUS).
