Overview

About the property

3 bedroom, 2 bath Log Cabin with private lake in the mountains near Blue Ridge

Risen Star is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia. Our cabin is situated on a private 5 acre lake in the mountains near Blue Ridge. A quiet getaway where you can do everything... or nothing at all.

Risen Star is named after the starry nights where the glimmer of a clear night shimmers across our private lake. Our cabin will impress you with its custom decor, well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, modern baths, and granite counters, all wrapped in the fun of the private lake. Since our cabin is also OUR vacation spot there is much for you to enjoy inside and out - and there is plenty of room for family and friends.

Sit on the screened porch and take in the lush trees, peaceful mountain surroundings, the view of the lake, and the breezes across the water. Enjoy your morning coffee on your bedroom's breakfast deck or rock yourself to comfort in a hand-made, Amish rocker on the screened porch. Have the kids set up their camping hammocks lakeside or lounge on the large lakeside dock. Maybe your rather just bubble away your stress in our hot tub on the front deck.

There are plenty of things to do inside, as well. Among the amenities are: a fully stocked kitchen, a relaxing great room with fireplace, terrace level play room and den where there is a tv, X-box, and a foosball table.

Risen Star sleeps up to 8 comfortably. A master bedroom with King is located on the main floor. A second Master bedroom with King can be found on the second floor with an on-suite bathroom. A lofted bedroom is across the catwalk on the second floor with two full beds. Each bathroom has a jetted tub and shower, too.

The town of Blue Ridge is only minutes away. The quaint charm of downtown is splashed with wonderful eateries and charming shoppes. You're minutes from the many activities that Blue Ridge has to offer, including water sports on Lake Blue Ridge and the nearby rivers. You can enjoy fresh produce and picking at the many local farms during all of the harvest seasons from strawberries in May to apples in the Fall.

With our own private lake, Risen Star is a great family vacation spot in all seasons. We sit next to 3 Bears Lodge (our college best friends), which allows you to inquire into renting both for a large, special occasion. We've had the privilege of hosting several family reunions, family holidays and the occasional lake-front wedding. The combination of properties is great for holding a wedding along the serenity of the lake, with plenty of space for a larger family to share the entire weekend together. Feel free to ask us about renting both cabins, but plan ahead as both of our cabins tend to fill up quickly, especially for holiday weeks/weekends.

Risen Star is more than a mountain or lake cabin. It's an experience for the mind, body and soul. Repeat visitors call it their 'home away from home'. It's a place where work, stress and worries seem to go away and a sense of calm and peace abound.

We hope you enjoy your stay.

About Don & Susan Stow

We're Susan and Don. Georgia natives, Susan is a designer and seamstress. You see her touch everywhere in the cabin from furnishings to drapes and bedding to paintings and the unique dinning room table and chairs. Don learned construction from his dad and has worked with Susan to put their shared vision into reality. We have family in Blue Ridge and have grown up around lakes and beaches. I guess that's what we love about our cabin, our own little piece of a shoreline.

Don & Susan Stow purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Don & Susan Stow chose Morganton

Out of the blue, our college best friends called to say they had purchased a cabin on a small lake and that the cabin next door was for sale. When we visited Risen Star we knew we wanted it. The charm, location and lake really sold us, plus, the fact that our great friends would be next door. We've put a lot of work and love into cleaning it up, decorating it and making it a comfortable getaway. We love the fact that it's not only a Georgia mountain retreat, but the lake adds so much more fun for our entire family, from swimming to fishing to paddling canoes. If you want, you also have the opportunity to rent two cabins on the same lake. Our next door neighbors are our college best friends and, if available, we can rent both for large occasions, such as family reunions, holidays or weddings by the lake.

What makes this cabin unique

Risen Star gives you the best of both worlds. A cabin, nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, but also situated on a serene, private lake. Maybe you can't run your big ski boat, but you can take in the dancing breezes, see the stars glitter on the lake's reflection at night, and hear the tree frogs come out and sing to you at sunset. The layout of the cabin is charming and comfortable. We relax out on the screened porch or listen to music in the den while our kids play downstairs in the game room...and we love Blue Ridge. We're still finding new things out about the area. Taking in a drive-in movie, walking the shops, enjoying a light lunch or driving around and seeing the beautiful, natural canvas that's been painted for everyone to see. You'll see Susan's touch on everything from the custom drapes to the fluffy pillows, shams, duvets and matelasse coverlets in the bedrooms. I love the beds she has found, the comfy sofas and cool table in the kitchen. The charm and sophistication of the cabin is inviting. Hide in a corner and read a book. Gather on the porch and play cards. Jump off the dock into the cool water. Take a slow, quiet, glide on the lake in the canoe. You'll want to come back, we're sure. Our kids love hanging their outdoor hammocks on the lake-side trees. We recently purchased 4 Grand Trunk hammocks that we make available to our guest for rent. Let us know if you're interested (See their picture).

Guestbook comments from the owner

A family recently stayed at our cabin with kids and 2 pets. We welcome pets, as we hope to make it more of a "total" family experience, and we also recognize that kennels/boarding can be expensive. When we went into our lovely cabin, after their stay, we found horrible scratches on our floors and doors, prints and scratches on our furniture, stains on our new comforters, and hair everywhere. When we followed up with the guest, they became livid. It's unfortunate that guests like these often make owners decide NOT to allow pets. We pride ourselves with having a great space for relaxing and enjoying. We hope people don't take advantage of our place, such as these people did, and if they do mess it up, they clean it up or pay to have it taken care of. This isn't just a "rental property", this is our "second home" and we want others to enjoy it. If you can't watch over your pet. If your pet won't stay off our furniture. If your pet will dirty, damage, destroy our place, please keep them home.

For the rest of you that have respected our wonderful get-away... or for future guest that will come and enjoy our "home away from home", we still welcome your pet, but please respect our home.

Looking forward to many great times on the lake

What a beautiful cabin!

  • 5 of 5

This is our 5th fall in the Blue Ridge area and hands down this was our favorite cabin. The location was perfect, the cabin was clean and well decorated, the beds were comfortable, the kitchen was well appointed...everything was great! Only recommendation, if you have very small children bring a baby gate for the stairs to the downstairs game-room. My poor nearly blind dog fell down them the first day there so we ran to Walmart and got a gate! Problem solved!

Absolutely wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Risen Star and felt privileged to be able to call this property "home" (with our dog) for a week in August. We have rented many vacation homes over the years, but this was our favorite, by far. It was wonderfully and comfortably decorated and a person who enjoys cooking while vacationing - I was grateful for the quality appliances, utensils, dishes/glasses, etc. We could not have enjoyed the setting any more and loved building our puzzle on the dining table which gave us a beautiful lakeview; paddling around the tiny lake and just lounging on the lakeside deck; sitting in the rocking chairs on the screened porch for hours - and eating all of our meals there as well; enjoying the deer-sightings on our dog walks; daily afternoon naps in the GLORIOUSLY COMFY bed; fires in the living room; and relaxing in the outside hot tub.

We also appreciated the resource book which had so much information and lots of suggestions. We worshipped on Sunday morning at The Ridge Church; took a 3-hour recommended area road trip; went on an AMAZING mountainside trail ride at Blanche Manor just over the Georgia/Tennessee line; visited the local orchard and its shops (buying freshly picked apples and the last of the season's peaches); explored the shops of nearby downtown Blue Ridge; and tried a few of the restaurants that Don suggested (our favorite: Cucina Rustica); and took a 39-mile drive through the breathtaking Ocoee River Gorge - ending up in Cleveland, TN to visit a Publix grocery store (the company I work for - and the area we may retire to in the future).

Don was wonderful to work with as we prepared for our trip, and also sent a message to us shortly after we arrived to make sure that everything was OK and that we had gotten safely to the house. We can definitely recommend this property without hesitation and believe that it would be great for couples or families - and once again... great for people with a dog. We can only imagine how beautiful the property and surrounding areas would be in the fall and the winter!

Great location with beautiful private lake in your backyard.

  • 4 of 5

This rental property is in a great location in the Blue Ridge Mountains just outside of Blue Ridge, Georgia. It is less than an hour of Tennessee and the Smokies and of North Carolina. A private lake borders the back of the property with two docks providing easy access to the lake. The lake is beautiful, as clear as any lake we have been in. The house has two canoes and a paddle board for recreation. Swimming and fishing are right off the dock. The recreational equipment needs some repair/replacement. When we arrived the house had not been cleaned from the last stay and some parts of the house appeared to have gone a long time since the last cleaning. For example, the oven was not useable until it was cleaned thoroughly. The owner did respond quickly to getting the house cleaned, but we lost a night and most of a day before we could settle in. We were compensated by the owner for our lost time.

Owner's Response: Hi Dave. The good part is that you enjoyed your stay. The better part is that we got rid of our cleaners after this mess. But as the owners, we certainly take responsibility and the condition of our cabin seriously. I'm glad we were able to get there and address their failure and correct the issues and make things right. It's important to us that we fully support our guests and that those that we pay to take care of things are treating our place like it's their own. Despite that fact that she hired someone to take care of things in her absence, things were not as they should have been. I'm so glad you called us immediately and that we could get there to get everything to its correct place and condition. It was though the perfect storm (or should we say, imperfect storm) happened that night. We appreciate your candor and also appreciate that you noted that you were quickly taken care of an really enjoyed the cabin and the surrounding area. Again, it's very important for us to make sure our guests expectations are exceeded, when it comes to our place.

We sit next to 3 Bears Lodge (close friends). This allows rental of both cabins for larger events (reunions, weddings). Feel free to inquire about renting both properties at the same time. Both sit on our private lake and are excellent for large events along the holidays. We've had several 'water front' weddings that have enjoyed the serenity of our mountain, lake location.
