About Jan Stevens

I have been coming to Bowen all my life.My great grandfather, Jake Dorman pioneered here in the late 1800's. He bought acres of land in Dorman Bay

After retiring in 2007 I purchased the Evergreen Hall B&B in Deep Bay on Bowen and then later decided to add the Evergreen cottage on Taylor Rd for a vacation rental My children loved coming to the cottage and roaming the trails on our private acreage behind the .

cottage and swim at September Mourn beach just down the road. Bowen being so close to Vancouver and just a 20 minute ferry ride make this a very desirable and safe community to both live and visit

Why Jan Stevens chose Bowen Island

My father picked this location to build the cottage because of the views, easy to access all year, and the proximity to the village of Snug Cove and the marinas

What makes this cottage unique

The Evergreen cottage is a Lindal cedar home with high ceilings , beams and windows in the living room letting in light all year. The huge cedar decking with glass panels allow the views forever both from inside and out.

From the open kitchen while preparing a meal watching the ferries go by and the Cruise ships in the distance, the lights of Vancouver across the water, the deer grazing in the yard, the morning sunrise over the north shore mountains and the stars at night while sitting on the deck make this a very inviting and magical experience

Guestbook comments from the owner

As described....truly a lovely cottage with spectacular views!!! Sunrises were spectacularly beautiful and it was wonderful to be able to grab our coffees and step out onto the enormous deck and enjoy them. The cottage was very clean and tidy and well laid out with all the amenities of home and then some. The bed was extremely comfortable - we had excellent nights of sleep for our entire visit.

Wonderful

  • 4 of 5

I was very impressed on how clean the cottage was. We hiked Kilarneky lake which was a lot of fun. The only suggestion I might make is that the seating was not very comfortable. Mind you, my friend and I are in our seventies. The beds were great.

Definitely would stay again.

Those red chairs were the winner!

  • 3 of 5

Positives:

The deck is huge and the view is beautiful - watching the water traffic all day and night from those red Muskoka chairs was lovely. *You should know - this is not a waterfront home. There is the driveway in front then the street, then other properties - then water. You can't here the waves - you can only see the water (through power lines).

There are 3 good size rooms, and the one we stayed in had a very comfortable queen size bed - and TV.

The bathroom was great - I am a bathtub person - so a nice deep tub is a real treat, and enjoyed - the shower was also good.

Peaceful and quiet - you could see neighbours on both sides, be we never heard them.

Disappointments:

- Fire place was wonderful to look at - but we were NOT aloud to burn anything in it.

- You can walk to the ferry - but not if you need to have your luggage for a week with you. It is more than 20 min (as per google) and the terrain would be treacherous if you had a suitcase.

- no Tissue box (use what we had - then toilet paper was used)

- no hair drier (stayed in VRBO's from Florida to Sooke - never had to worry about bringing mine) Flat hair was the style for the week!

- no lighter for the BBQ (there were short little wooden matches, but you had to lift the grill to reach the area to light the fire - since the ignition was not working)

Oddity, but may be the Island way... When we arrived, all windows and doors were open and unlocked - it was a very hot day -and we assumed that it was all left open to let the air through - we contacted Jan to confirm (after doing a walk through of all the rooms - all seemed to be okay).

Owner's Response: The Evergreen Cottage while not a waterfront property does have gorgeous water views. Relaxing on the large cedar deck is a great spot to enjoy the shipping traffic and quiet natural surroundings. The cottage is located in a peaceful rural neighbourhood allowing our guests the quiet getaway they desire. We find the Adirondack chairs to be exceptionally comfortable too. We always learn from our guest reviews and find them helpful for us to improve our future guests’ stay so thank you for the valuable feedback. Fires in the fireplace are allowed October through the end of April. We provide a 3-hour log for each night of our guest’s stay. Guests do appreciate the mood it gives during the colder, rainier months. May through September we do NOT allow fires in the fireplace. A hairdryer is provided and located in the dresser drawer in the master bedroom. Going forward we will make sure it is left in an easy to see location; “Flat hair” is not allowed even on Bowen! Happy to provide nose tissue for our guests. We have added it to our shopping list. The cottage is only a 20-minute walk from Snug Cove and handy to arrive without a car for guests that have packed lightly. You are right; wheeled luggage would not be practical to pull along our country roads to the cottage. For our guests that arrive without a car and don't pack light, we recommend calling the Bowen Land Taxi for a lift. Meanwhile, our guests do enjoy the proximity to the town center for shopping, dining and getting their exercise at the same time. Lighting the propane BBQ is simple with stick matches: turn on the gas, drop the lit match next to the burner……..poof…..the BBQ will ignite. Bowen is known for being VERY safe, and most homeowners do not lock their doors at all. Shhh, don't let the word out. On this unusually hot day, our housekeeper didn’t give it a second thought and wanted our guests to arrive at a cooler accommodation, so she left doors and windows open. We can understand that most visitors from the city would be surprised at this island way, but it indeed shows how safe and secure Bowen Island locals feel. Questions or challenges?
