About Mona Rishel-Shissler

Bryon - middle back row and me in blue - middle front row with our kids and grandkids. We purchased Campbell Farm in 1990. For 30 years we worked as consultants restoring our log home, refurbishing all the out buildings including our - A Cottage at Campbell Farm. We continue to expand vegetable and flower gardens and enjoy sharing the property with all the wonder folks who return again and again to our cottage and now, our 'glamping' site.

Mona Rishel-Shissler purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Mona Rishel-Shissler chose Laurel Highlands

Bryon began thinking about building the 'glamping' site about 12 years ago when our family reunion was at a cousin's farm. Chuck and his son set up their 'trappers' tent and Bryon said, this would be a wonderful addition to our 'camping' site at the farm. He built all the structures and situated the site strategically to enjoy the great views.

What makes this cottage unique

If you want to enjoy the outdoors but aren't quite ready for camping or, have had some raining camping experiences - this site is for you. And, Bryon has been thoughtful with the placement to provide you with maximum privacy while being easily accessible.

Owner's Response: "Billion star accommodation" - I love this and, because there is little light pollution - on a clear night - you will see a billion+ stars. Also, consider our cottages listed here a VRBO - A Cottage At Campbell Farm and A Woodland Cottage at Campbell Farm

Peaceful, restful, restorative, love it!

This was the best most relaxing vacation I've had in a long time. The accommodations are just as shown and described in the listing - only better. You have to be there to grasp what an amazing view you have, to experience exploring the grounds, and the hospitality of your hosts. All this and lots of fresh air and sunshine, and more types of birds than I've seen in a long time. We had a couple of rain storms blow through and even those were an enjoyable part of the experience - they gave us time to enjoy the spacious tent and front porch. And a word about the 'comfort station' - you may be skeptical about how it could be odorless, but it really is. My wife, who never understood the concept of reading in the bathroom found herself reading one of the interesting titles found on the bookshelf in the comfort station. We are already trying to figure out when we can return, perhaps renting some of the adjacent rentals so that family and friends can share the experience. We also brought out bikes and had easy access to the Fort Hill trailhead of the Great Allegheny Passage. We rode into Confluence and back. So if you want to get away, unplug, and sit by the fire, this is the place to do it.

Owner's Response: We always appreciate the time and thought guests put into their reviews. And are happy the enjoyed their visit. The tent sits on a raised platform and opens onto a large covered deck so you can enjoy the view even if it rains. The farm is a short drive to the Fort Hill Trailhead of the GAP - ride to Confluence or Rockwood for lunch. Or, drive a bit further to Meyersdale. Day trips on the GAP are one of our guests favorite things to do.

A lovingly prepared grounds and artistically appointed furnishings with heavens 🌅!

Mona and Bryon are sharing what is very dear to them---their land. And we are given the privilege to share their vision of a glamping experience! Not unlike the organic architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, Bryons,' creation of an outdoor kitchen/bathing room/wood storage space in just 20x20--shows that being part of nature extends your feeling of home! Mona's penchant for yellow shows up with a happy door on a shed here and a sunshiny birdhouse there! Pieces of pottery or coverings match perfectly and ensures comfort to the proposition of living outdoors. Flowers everywhere. A riot of daisies surprise you behind an out building, Lupine graces the meadow, and the white pine stands vigil at the corner of the meadow where songbirds plot their advances to bird feeders near breakfast nook and porch table, so close to humans that they must certainly have decided to befriend cheery strangers. And then the climax! Sitting on the front deck in wood bent rocker watching a storm move through, clouds billowing darkness, releasing a torrent, then slowly traveling over, clouds lighten and open to sun! And then ....it's happening! Gold! Pink! Purple! Streaming, glowing, and for the final movement...setting!

How do you create a glamping experience that is unforgettable?

You experience it yourself. Mona and Bryon and son watched that sunset and knew they had something special to share up on that grassy hilltop. Then they built around it, but just minimally.

Comfortable bedding, warm water, cozy rockers...creatures of comfort are we. But given that, we don't need much more than that glorious meadow and that radiant sunset.

Enjoyed!

We are so thankful for such a beautiful sanctuary! Miss the hummingbirds but there were plenty of other birds to enjoy. The train activity was not conducive for sleep. So thankful for a place to decompress.

Mona and Bryon are wonderful hosts and take special care to create a lovely atmosphere that is rustic yet comfortable. The bird and sunset watching is incredible; hiking and biking are convenient. We had a magical time.

HEAVEN

  • 5 of 5

This truly is a heaven on earth. We've stayed here twice and once at the cottage. Beautiful view of the mountains with a wonderful sunset. We loved watching the birds. If your a bird watcher, then you'll love the mass variety of them that come right into the feeders including Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Red-headed Woodpecker. At night you'll get to hear the Coyotes. They came so close that if we gotten out of bed and walked outside we would have seen them in field in front of us. (to tired to look) Very neat to hear. Mona and Bryon respect your privacy but also are very hospitable and so very kind. Respect their land as they are kind enough to provide and share such beauty of a place. OUR FAVORITE PLACE BY FAR TO COME TO FOR PEACE AND SERENITY. We definitely will be back again & again. You'll love it too!
