2 Bedroom, 2 Bath + 2 Lofts - Architect Designed Custom Home

This unique architect designed barn style home was built by our family in 1992. After 21 years of holiday memories and lazy summer afternoons on the Mountain we've decided to put it on the seasonal rental market for the first time ever. In September 2013 the house was updated with new furnishings, fresh paint, new kitchen accessories and a new 55' HDTV.

Don't be fooled by the small footprint, this 3 BR, 2BA + loft lives much larger than most 1500 sq ft homes you've seen. In the master bedroom is a king bed, TV, walk-in closet, deck and covered patio. All bedrooms and loft are open to the main great room space - a large open living and dining space with 15' beamed ceilings, floor to ceiling french doors opening onto the back patio, a wood burning fireplace and the flat screen TV. The generous dining area features an antique wood dining table with seating for up to 10 people. Many a holiday meal was shared here with close friends and family. Opening to the dining area is the simple but spacious galley style kitchen with a charming breakfast nook, perfect for morning coffee or full on breakfast for 4.

Bedroom #2 is located above the master and accessed by stairs from the living area. It's small but cozy with its antique queen bed. Above the kitchen is the kid friendly bedroom with two twin beds served by a ships ladder.

Over the main entry is the sunny loft with large SW facing windows where afternoon light streams into the main living areas. This loft has a full size bed and a small closet. It works great as either an office or an extra sleeping area.

The 2 bathrooms each have full size tub/showers and windows.

A full size washer and dryer is provided in the utility room opposite the kitchen.

Two separate parking areas easily accommodate four cars with the two upper parking spaces adjacent to a ramp for ease of access to the main floor through the side door. There is a single step between upper landing of ramp and deck.

The location is convenient but private on a quiet cul de sac only a short walk to the golf course. A few steps from our back patio is a path to the Appalachian Trail (10 min hike) and spectacular views of the Shenandoah Valley. For skiing the Mid Atlantic region's top rated ski area is a 5 minute drive down Wintergreen Dr. so you can leave fresh tracks in the morning and beat the crowd home for apres ski by the fire.

Deferred Maintenance

We were supposed to enjoy a long 4th of July Holiday weekend at this property, but upon arrival, found so many basic maintenance problems which were in fact safety issues, that we could not in good conscious stay there with our 3 small children. Even our children remarked on the poor condition of the house, and that they wanted to leave. We contacted the homeowners shortly after our arrival, who after much back-and-forth, only agreed to give us a partial refund, and then acted like we just being "picky."

Our 3 night/4 day stay was quite expensive in comparison to the accommodations. They kept 40% of our total payment, and meanwhile they re-advertised the property as available for the remainder of our stay. Who knows if they did re-rent it. Essentially we donated six hundred plus to them - which I hope they put to good use to improve the property and all of its problems.

If you enjoy staying in a home where the windows are inoperable (what to do in case of fire?), screens missing, trash discarded around the property, peeling linoleum, mold and a non-functioning land-line telephone (no cell service for emergency calls) and many other issues, then this is the place for you.

Otherwise, there are many fine properties on the mountain, with responsible and reasonable owners, where you can enjoy the many and varied activities that WTG has to offer, and come back to a place where you can feel that your family is safe and comfortable.

No doubt the homeowners will try to defend their actions, and say that we agreed to partial refund - but when someone has your money hostage, what else can you do? I would have pursued the balance in court, but the distance from our home made that option even more of an inconvenience than the homeowners already made for us.

If I could give this place less than 1 star, I would.

Owner's Response: After more than three years of renting our home on VRBO and over 30 reviews, most of which are five star, we finally got that one oddball review that is so far fetched we can only shake our heads. A few facts; 1. Roxanne's review is based on not spending even one night at our home. 2. They rented two separate places for the 4th of July weekend and apparently decided they preferred the other house on the arrival date. 3. Even though they had agreed to our cancellation policy we offered a refund of $1,000. Their response was "sure, we'll take the money if we can still stay in your house". That's when it started to smell like a scam. We never attempted to re-rent the house, it was much too late for that by the time we realized their intentions. The fact that we received five star reviews both before and directly after them only confirmed in our minds that their motives were disingenuous. Although they tried to threaten us with their status as lawyers, they soon decided the $1,000 refund was better than wasting their time in court for $600. We are very proud of the Mountain Barn and its history of 5 star reviews. One bad apple is not about to spoil the whole bunch for us.

Wonderful house and locale

My husband and I spent the month of August in this house to escape the hot, humid, rainy days of the Florida summer. We couldn't have been happier with the house, the location and the weather. The house had everything we needed +++. The mornings were cool and crisp. The afternoons were sunny and pleasant. The neighboring houses can hardly be seen or heard. The golf courses and hiking trails were all we needed. However, if golf and hiking are not your thing there is plenty to do and see in Nelson county and beyond. We loved the open architecture and mountain decor. We would not hesitate to recommend this house to anyone.

Quiet mountain retreat

The 'barn' was the perfect family getaway. Cozy but comfortable enough for my kids and parents. Gerri could not have been more welcoming, responsive and accommodating. Great location, close to Chestnut Springs pool and playground, as well as close to the nature center (my kids love!). The best part is the short hike from the back door to Indian Point overlook, which we did daily. Be aware that (as stated in the vrbo summary) all rooms but the master are fully open to the main room so we had to plan a bit to get the kids to bed, but it still worked wonderfully for us. We would stay again. Thanks Gerri!

Close to a lot of hiking trails, waterfalls and of course skiing. I would come back and stay at this house.

Great location and amenties

Recently took a short trip to Wintergreen, and canceled another location in order to book this one, and glad I did. Allowed my dogs, which was a huge plus. Place is less than 5 min drive to the slopes. House rules are reasonable. It was clean. Seeing deer in the backyard was a pleasant surprise given how close the houses are to eachother. I would stay again. Owner/Property manager was very quick with responses.
