This beautiful St. John vacation rental offers a gorgeous island view and on-site nature trails, close proximity to pristine National Park Beaches and restaurants and shops of Coral Bay - the peaceful side of St. John.
The cottage nestles within a shady, tropical forest, high up the steep slopes of St. John's Bordeaux Mountain. At the foot of the mountain lies picturesque Coral Bay harbor; beyond unfolds a panorama of peninsulas, islands, beaches and glowing turquoise channels that run east as far as Virgin Gorda and the Anegada Passage. This is the view Islands Magazine chose as the top spot in the world to watch the sunrise of the new millennium.
The Upper and Lower Levels of the cottage can be rented together or separately.
Lower Level: For the couple looking for a combination of affordability and comfort, the Lower Level is a perfect choice. Private and quiet, this charming apartment has tasteful decor, art by Caribbean artists, stained-glass windows and beautiful views to the British Virgins.
Enjoy the comfortable amenities of a queen-size bed, private bath with shower, a fully equipped kitchenette, dining table and chairs, and comfortable reading chair and lamp. You'll especially enjoy the private dining deck with its bistro table and chairs, lovely harbor view and direct access to the trails of Guavaberry Woods. Stairs down from the deck lead to a private garden with a hammock and grill for your use. There are sitting areas around the property where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful and cool woods, tropical fruit trees and flowering plants. The Lower Level has its own separate entrance, driveway and parking space.
The unit was built underneath the deck of the main house and with solid cypress ceiling panels to ensure you peace and quiet. A perfect getaway for the couple looking for affordable comfort and privacy.
Onsite Nature Trails: The best of St. John's natural beauty and astonishing biodiversity lies on-site at your doorstep. A trellised archway of hanging tropical flowers greets you as you enter and walk down a short stone stairway to the front door. The large (2/3 acre) hillside property is an ecological wonderland that invites wandering -- beautiful hand-crafted stone paths and gravel trails on several different levels lead you through the lush hardwood foliage of Guavaberry Woods, where picturesque and unique ponds, a meditation garden, bridge and benches, plus gardens of orchids, frangipani, hibiscus, bouganvilla, citrus and tropical fruit trees delight the eye.
Cool Retreat: Steady tradewinds, an easterly view and the lush surrounding forest make Stonegarden Cottage a comfortable tropical getaway year-round -- cool, quiet and peaceful. After a day on blazing white sand beaches or out on the glittering sea, it is delightful to return up the mountain to your forest retreat, savor a frozen drink while enjoying the view or gaze into a lily pond while hearing the breeze rustle the treetops.
NOTE: A 4-wheel drive vehicle is required in order to rent this unit (unless you are going carless) due to the need for a higher wheel-base to use the driveway.

Raf is a native St. Johnian, who grew up in the quiet village of Coral Bay. Thia came to live on St. John in the early 90's and eventually they met and fell in love. After pursuing careers in California for fourteen years, they returned to their beloved island to live at Stonegarden Cottage from 2009 - 2014 with their two daughters, Missy and Allegra, in order for their children to be closer to their grandparents and to grow up in the wonderful community and natural environment that St. John offers.

Buying property on St. John allowed us to pursue our dream of returning to St. John with our children. It took us almost 4 years to bring that dream to fruition, and renting Stonegarden Cottage to travelers in the meantime helped us save the funds necessary for the move. Now that we're back on the mainland, it's great fun to help travelers with accommodations, while lending a hand with travel advice and suggestions for what to do on the island.
Stonegarden Cottage is a unique, mountainside retreat for nature lovers, with a gorgeous view of Coral Bay Harbor and extensive nature trails throughout the surrounding property. The cottage is quiet, safe and private, yet close to Coral Bay village and the VI national park beaches. Cooling tradewinds keep the cottage comfortable all year round. You can enjoy a hike up Bordeaux Mountain from the cottage, just one of many hikes nearby; the cottage is easily accessible from a smooth, paved road.

My wife and I stayed at Stonegarden Cottage, in the lower level for a week. The cottage came as advertised and met my expectations based on the reviews and the pictures. Everything was professionally handled by the owner and the manager both of whom were responsive to our questions and needs. Though, we did not have many needs as everything we needed was provided including a grill with new utensils, a kitchen with everything we needed to cook, and a well appointed bed and bathroom that included a nice shower. They also had good towels and chairs for the beach.
The cottage was perfect for two people. There are two patio areas and a walking path through the gardens. It felt very private and there was a nice breeze so air conditioning was not needed.
The best thing though were the views! What a great site to see every morning and again when we came home later in the day. Stunning! The location above Coral Bay was ideal for us. I would return for another visit and recommend Stonegarden to any couple wanting to stay on the quiet side of the island.
The lower level of Stonegarden was as advertised. The only thing that could have been better would have been to have the upper level!
The owners and property manager were wonderful. The view is worth everything. The cottage is nicely equipped and the beach accessories were greatly appreciated.
Wonderful location just up the mountain from Coral Bay. Hard to imagine a better place for a reasonable price on St John.

LL jeep was great. Our jeep stopped at Love City Market so we took the bus to Salt Pond and Rams Head while they came out quickly and fixed it so we could make a scuba trip in the afternoon.
The rental was very nice with nice furnishings and true St. John history

I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to stay in the lower level of Stonegarden Cottage for 3-1/2 months this past summer, and it was exactly what I needed at the time! The grounds and surrounding trails through the woods were quite enchanting and I found many hidden treasures during my wandering, including a secluded sitting area where you can enjoy a tranquil waterfall after recent rains. The hammock located in the back provided the perfect space for reading during the day, or just relaxing and enjoying a glass of wine while listening to the sounds of birds and frogs as evening approached. Coffee is a must out on the deck, where you have a phenomenal view of Coral Bay. The inside space is expertly decorated in a tropical and tasteful manner, and the only maintenance issue I had was promptly addressed by the friendly and experienced staff. I highly recommend Stonegarden Cottage to anyone wishing to have a quiet retreat after exploring the beaches and park trails of St. John.
My husband & I spent a week in the lower level Stonegarden Cottage in November. This was our first visit to St. John and I had researched a number of rental options on VRBO before deciding on this little cottage. We definitely made the right choice in staying in this adorable cottage. The setting is idyllic. It's very private, quiet, and such a warm place to return after a long day of exploring the gorgeous beaches. The cottage had every comfort of home. We explored the majority of beaches on the island and we're glad we decided to stay on the quieter east side of St. John. The property manager, Emily, was fabulous in helping us get settled and answering our questions. If you are searching for a secluded & cozy place to stay then Stonegarden Cottage will complete your special time on St. John.
My wife and I spent 8 nights in the lower level of this wonderful house. Everything is exactly as advertised-and more! The view is amazing; we spent every evening on the upper deck. (We were fortunate that the main level was not rented so we got the run of that deck also! ) The constant breeze coming up from coral bay made those evenings very pleasant and bug free. We never turned on the a/c as it was very comfortable at night in the apartment with the windows open. We had everything we needed for our stay- coolers, chairs , dishes and grille etc. As first time visitors to saint John we had lots of questions even though we had done thorough research on the island. From my first phone inquiry to Thia the experience was very smooth. She was very helpful with ideas and pointers for our visit and the whole experience from then through booking and the trip itself was a no problem experience. Their on-site managers, Emily and Anthony are an absolute delight. They gave us spot on recommendations for restaurants, beaches and grocery stores; and were just super pleasant to talk to all around. We already are making plans to rent both levels when we return in a year with friends! If you're fortunate enough to get to visit this jewel of an island i would highly recommend stonegarden cottage. While you're here don't miss aqua bistro, miss Lucy's on jazz night, and shipwreck landing! Oh, and if you want a beach to yourself- put the jeep in 4wd and venture out to great lameshur beach. It's rocky but the snorkeling is great and everyone seems to go on to little lameshur where the ruins are and the beach is sandy. We spent two afternoons there and had it to ourselves 98 percent of the time!
Available right out your door is access to Bordeaux Mt. Trail, which you can hike to from Stonegarden Cottage. This national park trail leads you to some of the more remote beaches in the VI National Park (Lameshur, Reef Bay; There is a library of guide books and trail maps available for your use right in the unit, as well as a guest information book with directions on finding the best beaches and hiking trails on the island.
