Relaxed and Renewed

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for 2 weeks at Moon Beach Cottage. When we first arrived we were pleasantly surprised at how welcoming and clean the cottage was. From the outside it looked small, but inside was open and spacious and completely furnished. Another positive was the thoughtful stock of pots and pans, dishes, glassware, flatware, even some spices! Someone had even been there ahead of us and turned the air conditioning on.

Shopping was nearby in Oswego (10 mi away) and the village of Fairhaven is only about 3 miles away in the other direction. Our Verizon phone did not work at the cottage, so we had complete privacy, since the few neighbors we saw were very private and quiet. We totally zoned out, caught up on our reading, worked a jigsaw puzzle, which we haven't done for over 30 years, and cooked our meals. The lake was a constant marvel changing color and surface activity -- pounding waves and white caps one day and quiet gentle waves the next. We even saw the rare phenomenon of a double rainbow while driving through the beautiful rolling farmlands with grazing deer. We fell asleep each night listening to the songs of the frogs at the nearby pond and the background sound of the waves. My husband commented it was "the perfect vacation!" We will remember our stay with fondness and a deep sigh of contentment!

Oswego Graduation Stay

  • 5 of 5

Our son graduated from Oswego and we were looking for a place to stay close by that we could invite family up for this special weekend. This place was perfect!! Gathering/meeting place and was able to make dinner and have everyone eat together instead of fighting the crowds in the restaurants. Was wonderful stay.

Lovely location, but cottage has several issues that need to be addressed

  • 2 of 5

We wish that the cottage itself would have been more pleasant for us, because the location is spectacular. We enjoyed many campfires with the gorgeous view of the lake.

However, there were several issues that I communicated to the kind and friendly property owner, but I am also leaving in review so that future guests can verify them as being addressed before they also pay to stay here. 1) There was a leak above the fireplace. 2) The oven did not work (light comes on but no heat). 3) There was a critter getting inside somehow. We never saw it, but heard it several times in the evening and overnight. At first we thought it could be a mouse but it sounded more like when our cat runs around. Whatever it was also chewed a large hole through two rubbery/plastic lids on containers that were in the kitchen and knocked some books off of the side table. Definitely not a mouse. 4) Finally, not sure if this is related to the critter issue, but there was a rather unfavorable odor in pockets around the cottage, strongest by far in the entire kitchen area but occasionally we noticed it in the bathroom, too. I can best describe it as smelling like wet dog. I am sensitive to odors but my husband is not, and even he was overwhelmed by it and considered getting a hotel instead.

I wish I could have left a glowing review, but that would simply not be fair to future guests, because overall, we would not recommend staying here unless the owner can confirm that these issues have been addressed.

Owner's Response: Erin, I really appreciated you letting me know about the issues with the cottage last year. If I do not know about any issues, I can not fix them. Since your stay last year in September we have addressed the issues you mentioned. 1) The leak has been repaired at the location mentioned. 2) We have purchased a new stove. 3) Not sure who let the critter in and when, but there is no longer any critter in the cottage. 4) The odor must have been that critter and possibly the old stove. The critter is gone and the stove has been replaced! Again, I do appreciate your concerns and letting me know about these issues so I could address them.

Happily unplugged

  • 4 of 5

Sounds of the lake and quiet relaxation. Stairs to beach a bit disconcerting but the water was great. Almost no cell coverage so I wish there had been a landline for emergencies (we had a minor pet crisis, but Tara Animal hospital was AWESOME). Easy driving distance to Rudy's and the West Side in FairHaven. Loved my stay.

Cozy cottage on the lake

  • 4 of 5

Very peaceful with beautiful views a sort ride to Fair Haven (breakfast at Hardware Cafe, sunset walk on the jetties) and my fave, Ontario orchard market. Kitchen had all necessities, beds wre comfortable. Sunsets magnificent. I am worried about the stairs to the beach, they are steep and get beaten up by the waves during a storm. They could be hazardous for small kids or elderly people. We want to return!
