Historic Victorian estate in the heart of Willamette Valley wine country

Bedrooms 5
Space 3,400 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

A large 5 bedroom home in the perfect location for wine tasting

Make your visit to wine country a memorable one with a stay at the Historic Dayton Wine House. You’ll feel the grandness of this house right when you first step inside and see the 11 foot ceilings, large oversized rooms with period details and character rarely seen anymore. With updated heating, cooling and appliances, the large house has over 3400 finished square feet, comfortably sleeping 10 people in 5 bedrooms with 2 full bathrooms. A bottle of wine and tasting room coupons await for you to start the fun right away.

The kitchen is fully equipped for preparing a gourmet meal, with room for several chefs to cook at once. The 10 foot farmhouse table is a great gathering place in the large dining room and comfortably seats 12 people. There is a propane Weber grill to cook out and Adirondack chairs for a picnic in the yard.

Treat yourself for a great night’s sleep with comfortable beds, pillows, and white linens, and take a relaxing soak in the clawfoot tub.

After a day of exploring and wine tasting, come back and settle in to watch a movie from our library on the theater sized 135” HD TV with Paradigm speakers, or relax in one of the leather club chairs in the adjacent living room and play music through the bluetooth speakers.

Oregon is a world-class wine destination and recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first planting of its pinot noir grapes. The house is perfectly positioned in the middle of the Willamette Valley for easy access to go wine tasting at one of its 400+ wineries in any direction from the house. Multi-million dollar tasting rooms with jaw-dropping views are only minutes away. We are glad to share our favorite wineries or help with suggestions for your trip, and we provide winery maps to all of our guests.

You can walk a few blocks to The Joel Palmer house, one of the best fine dining restaurants in the Willamette Valley. Their menu centers around mushrooms and truffles that they forage themselves. Or for an upscale tavern vibe, walk across the square to The Barlow Room, a great place to eat and drink also owned by the owners of the Joel Palmer house. For your morning breakfast, you only have to walk across the street to The Blockhouse Cafe in an immaculately restored 1886 church. This restaurant has a beautifully lit exterior which you can see from our house. For your sweet fix, Archie’s Ice Cream Shop is always busy and frequently has vintage cars on display. Seufert winery and tasting room is also located near the main town square.

Outside of Dayton within a 10 minute drive from the house are many restaurants in McMinnville, Newberg and Dundee. Some of our favorites include Red Hills Market, Nick’s Italian Cafe, Dundee Bistro, Storr’s BBQ, Thistle Restaurant and Bar, The Painted Lady, Babica Hen, The Blue Goat and Ruddick/Wood.

The Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum and water-park is a not to miss museum only a few miles from the house, which is home the Spruce Goose airplane and an IMAX theater. Portland and the Oregon coast are both only about an hour away.

About Kathryn and Greg Sobotka

Greg and Kathryn are long time residents of Portland. Greg, originally from Oxford, Mississippi, graduated from University of Mississippi and is a realtor with Think Real Estate. Kathryn is from Cleveland, Ohio, graduated from Northwest University and is Senior Event Coordinator Vibrant Table Catering & Events.

Because of our mutual love of the Willamette Valley and their passion for Oregon pinot noir, we purchased The Historic Dayton Wine House in 2014 to have a second home in the area we love. We have been coming to Oregon wine country for years and still get excited each time we go, discovering a new winery or exploring backroads to find a new favorite restaurant. When not in wine country we love to travel and enjoy all things outdoors.

Why Kathryn and Greg Sobotka chose Willamette Valley

We feel incredibly fortunate to be the owners and caretakers of this beautiful historic property. The grand 5 bedroom home, built in 1885, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a beautiful example of Victorian style architecture. Known as the “Gabriel-Will house” on the historic register, this is a prominent house in Dayton overlooking the town square on a large 1/2 acre lot.

We plan on keeping the home in our family forever and are so excited to be able to share it with our guests. Perfect in size for large groups or with a smaller group, each couple can have their own floor.

What makes this house unique

Dayton is like stepping back in time, and vacationing here feels a world away from the big city. Dayton residents take great pride in their town and hold special events throughout the year that are fun to participate in. The summer concerts in the park on Friday nights are our favorite.

Come experience what both we and our previous guests have loved about vacationing at the Historic Dayton Wine House.

Perfect Willamette Valley Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Dayton Wine House over Memorial Day weekend and it served as a home base for a bit of a reunion. There were 6 of us from different parts of the country and we all decided to meet up in wine country because why not! The house was *perfect* for this. The location, the layout, the amenities ... everything about it was perfectly suited for a group getaway. The upstairs bathroom with it's separate shower room made it possible for more than one person to get ready at a time which is certainly a time saver! The kitchen had everything we needed to fix family style breakfasts and dinners when we didn't want to go out. The long family style table was perfect for game nights as well. The Bluetooth speakers allowed us to all play tunes we wanted to hear and the living room and theater room were a cozy addition for reading or watching movies if desired. The epsom salts in the upstairs bath were a nice addition! Nothing like soaking in a big claw-foot tub after a day of wine tasting!

Nearby, the Block House Cafe, and Joel Palmer House were two of our favorite restaurants during our visit. Definitely a don't miss on both of those! Dayton is charming and clearly undergoing a bit of a renaissance so it was nice to give back to the local economy and not have to drive to other towns if we didn't want to.

This house is one we'll keep on our list for future visits. It had everything we needed and more. Thanks to Kathryn and Greg for being gracious hosts and for having such a well thought out space for guests. We'll be back!

Perfect Stay in Wine Country

  • 5 of 5

We rented this beautiful home from Kathryn and Greg for a 4-day weekend to celebrate our son's 30th birthday. What a welcome relief to walk into this stately air conditioned home while the area was experiencing especially warm weather (107 degrees) coupled with the smoky air from the BC fires. The house takes you back in time with the very large rooms, high ceilings, vintage wall paper throughout. The beds were very comfortable and the house was well appointed, whether utensils/spices/basics in the kitchen, to lovely toiletries in the bathrooms, to games and movies. And the yard was a bonus... lovely (double) hammocks and several fire engine red Adirondack chairs.

The first night we dined at The Barlow Room. It was nice and the food good for what we were looking for. There are a couple of other places to dine in this very small town, but we didn't take advantage of them. The second night, however, we dined on the beautiful patio at La Maison Bistro in McMinnville and had a fabulous meal, and great service, and it turned into being one of those evenings that will always be remembered. On Saturday, we hired Pinotcar to drive us to the wineries. It was perfect. We had 13 people and they had a van. Nick also called and made appointments for wineries, etc, and was very easy to deal with. No frills (fancy lunch, etc), but rather a safe and worry-free ride. Nick helped getting the older folks in and out of the van, as well as carrying our picnic to the winery and helping with purchased bottles. He couldn’t have been nicer to work with and the cost was very reasonable. It was a very nice alternative to the fancy and all day wine tours. After touring 2 wineries, we were happy to again kick back and use the house, both inside and out for a few hours of relaxing followed by cooking dinner in the well-equipped kitchen. The large farmhouse table added to the ambience of the meal. All in all, the weekend was all we could ask for. And I will close this review by saying that Kathryn and Greg were a delight to work with. They were most accommodating with any of our requests, were quick to respond both before and during our stay. We would recommend working with them and enjoying their lovely home.

Perfect in Dayton!

  • 5 of 5

The Dayton Wine House was perfect for the 7 of us during our stay in Oregon. Kathryn and Greg are great hosts. The house was well appointed with everything we needed. We did quite a bit of cooking at the house as we enjoyed some local seafood. Played bocce ball most days. Took the owners advice and visited several local wineries and restaurants. Made the trip into Portland, which was not far. Beautifully appointed and we really enjoyed the sound system in the living room and the TV room. Perfect house in a perfect location! Thanks again.

Fantastic, centrally located Willamette Valley gem!!

  • 5 of 5

After attending OPC 2017 I decided to extend my trip with friends. I couldn't ask for a better retreat than the Dayton Wine House. The rooms were so large and the decor was exactly what I was looking for in a historic Victorian home. The beds were comfortable, the house was vast and clean. It also had a great, central location to all things wine country. We plan on returning to stay at your wonderful home again next year! Thank you, thank you!!!

Amazingly charming house!

  • 5 of 5

Girls getaway weekend filled with wineries, shopping and more wineries. The house was beautifully maintained while still keeping it's old-world charm. We all ooh-ed and ahh-ed as we entered and saw the the original crown molding and light fixtures. Large spacious kitchen where we cooked and drank wine after a day of visiting wineries which were so close. We took a ten minute drive to charming McMinnville where we went antique shopping and ate at wonderful restaurants. We even started the day by going to a cozy coffee shop where one of the women spotted OUR HOUSE in a picture on the wall! How marvelous! We will definitely be back. Thank you Kathryn and Greg for making our stay so memorable.
