Watauga Lake is an extremely beautiful and clean recreational lake (3rd cleanest in the country) located in the Cherokee National forest with 105 miles of shoreline. More than half of the lake is mountainous national forest and cannot be developed, so its really naturally beautiful and not crazy overpopulated with boats. This hidden gem is known to be one of the most beautiful lakes on the east coast. Watauga lake is great for boating, jet-skiing, tubing, skiing/wakeboarding, fishing, swimming, kayaking etc.

Downstream of the dam is a very popular whitewater rafting area as most of the local companies in TN and NC bring their patrons here. Hiking is also very popular as the Appalachain trail and a couple of small waterfalls are nearby. This property is also close to attractions in Boone, Banner Elk and Blowing Rock, NC and also attractions in eastern TN.

We have great sunny summers with no mosquitoes and beautiful fall colors when the leaves change. In the winter time, skiing is a popular option at nearby Sugar and Beech Mountain. This is a spectacular mountain and lake getaway.

Great mountain cabin!

Everything you need! Large refrigerator, nice layout, and quiet location! Highly recommended! Only item that would have improved our stay would have been a way to get back on the dock after jumping into the lake... it is a bit difficult..

Wonderful summer vacation property

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed the peace and tranquility this beautiful property provided. Plenty of room for my family of 5, including 2 older teens, and my father. The 2 kayaks were great for exploring the calm water of the lake; only a handful of boats passed us the entire time. Beautiful views from the wraparound porch. Took advantage of eating at the outdoor covered picnic table (even during a light rain) and using the fire pit for roasting marshmallows. The kitchen was well-equipped. The owners have kindly made improvements to the house based on reviewer comments, including both a standard coffee maker and Keurig at this time, a crock pot, and Wifi Internet access (agree with previous reviewer - access is limited but sufficient for casual use). The office area is nice for those having to catch up on a little work. We enjoyed a few restaurants: Shirley's was pricey, but delicious family-style meals with friendly service (biscuits, meatloaf, mac and cheese, and desserts were our favorites); Big Dan's BBQ in Elizabethton had amazing pulled pork and baked potato salad; Peddlin' Pig in Boone had a neat atmosphere and great BBQ. (Make sure to check the internet for times/days restaurants are open--some are only open on the weekend.) Spent one morning on a leisurely hike at Dennis Cove; nice bridge over the river at the end. This is a great property for boaters: a well maintained, wide concrete boat ramp is adjacent to the property, just yards from the dock. Depth at the dock measured 16 feet, and depth in the cove exceeds 24 feet throughout. Depth in the lake is 50-60 feet up to 200'+. If you want to rent, Fish Springs Marina (a 20 min drive by car or by boat) has well-maintained, reasonably-priced pontoon boats.

Just a few things to know: first, the wood floors are lovely, but they are creaky, especially if anyone gets up at night. Second, the upstairs can warm up quite a bit during the day, so the 2 upstairs bedrooms take a while to cool down at bedtime. Next, it's a great property if you bring your dog, but we didn't and there was wet dog odor in the living room and in the furniture. Last, the water heater has a 38 gallon capacity, so if you're a large group, you'll want to spread out shower times and use of the dishwasher/washing machine so someone doesn't end up with a cold shower!

We are grateful to the owners for making this beautiful home and property available. Jenelle provided very prompt responses. We enjoyed our vacation very much!

Rustic elegance on the water- HIGHLY recommended

  • 5 of 5

Watauga Lake is one of the cleanest and most pristine lakes in the entire Southeastern US.

Set in the Cherokee National Forest, the lake atmosphere is outstanding if you're looking for a place to relax, rewind, and recover from whatever you drive or whatever drives you.

Memorial Day 2017 was our second visit to this cabin. Our most recent experience confirms the validity of our decision to try to make a visit to this location an annual event. But on to the property itself.....

This property is elegant, spacious, well designed and appointed. The bedding, bath, laundry, and kitchen furnishings provided by Julie and Jenelle cover just about anything and everything you'll need. The location is quiet and secluded. Water access to both a main lake channel and a quiet cove is only a few steps away. The private dock is in the cove, so your personal watercraft are not subjected to the traffic, beating, and constant wave action of a busy channel. 2 kayaks are included to enhance your lake experience. The well-designed and maintained boat ramp makes it easy to launch and recover your own watercraft. Techies are well-served. There are large flat-screen TVs and DVD players throughout the house. Wifi Internet access is limited but sufficient for casual web browsing and e-mail retrieval.

Excellent lakeside retreat

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful location and very roomy. The house was even larger than I expected and my party did not feel cramped. The extra large refridgerator is a plus because the grocery stores are not around the block but we anticipated that and the fridge easily held all of our food and drinks. The patio and deck area are wonderful for cookouts and relaxing in the evening. Can't be enough said about having a private dock for fishing, boating and using the owners kayaks. The lake is beautiful and peaceful. Only negative is we could not get the Wifi to work but the owner was responsive and we just went old school and used the landline for communicating with our group (no cell service for Verizon customers). We plan on making a return trip.

Exceeded our Expectations!

  • 5 of 5

We had a long 7 hour drive, but it was worth it. It is always a difficult time making your way to the lake by at first winding roadways and then eventually one lane country road, Sugar Hollow Road, with a boat in tow. That is usually the case though with lake front homes. The one way road was only a couple miles and if we approached an oncoming car, they pulled off the road for us. Be sure to use a GPS and not rely on cell phone google maps as you will lose most of the map function in the mountains. The house was beautiful and plenty large for the 6 of us. It was very stocked with practical and cleaning items which was nice. The only problem in the kitchen was the manual can opener needed replaced. It barely worked to open my can of green beans. I brought a crock pot to cook pulled bbq while we boated. This might be a good additon to the house. It was nice to have a meal ready after a long day of boating. I kayaked for the 1st time and I loved it. The lake was very serene and not many boaters. We had nice neighbors that had just purchased the house across the cove. It was hard to find a marina map and took us 2 days but finally bought one at Fish Springs Marina, which the property manager recommend visiting to buy nice Watagua t-shirts to bring home. The gas was reasonable at that marina but not at Mallard Cove Marina, which was the closest to us. However, Mallard Cove had large Carp fish at their docks that you have to see and feed. At one point we had lost electricity with no storm. Julie and Janelle returned my call promptly to tell me the Electricity Co was working on the problem. We had service with our Sprint phone and on the lake occasionally our Verizon phones. When the electricity went out the land line phone was cordless and would not work. I am wondering if we had left and locked up, if the electronic locks on the doors would not have opened/worked?? The electricity came back on within a couple hours. We had 4 different dogs that visited regularly. They were all friendly. I love the privacy and seclution we felt with the location. You could walk through the property/peninsula to the end of the property on a pathway. I was hoping to see a bear, but saw cows and a mule instead off the shore of the lake while boating. My son bought a little net from a marina and had fun catching tiny fish at our dock. I would love to return another summer. Thank you for renting your home to us for the week. The Turner Family

Excellent place for a relaxing "off the grid" vacation

  • 5 of 5

This house is in a very quiet, peaceful cove. The other reviewers were correct in many of the things they said: The beds and linens are very comfortable, there is no cell phone service at the house, the internet connection worked great except for one rainy evening, and the location was ideal for us. Being 35 minutes from Boone and Elizabethon gives you additional options for outings. The owners were very attentive to my needs, and provided quick responses to our questions. I highly recommend this property!
