Watauga Lake is an extremely beautiful and clean recreational lake (3rd cleanest in the country) located in the Cherokee National forest with 105 miles of shoreline. More than half of the lake is mountainous national forest and cannot be developed, so its really naturally beautiful and not crazy overpopulated with boats. This hidden gem is known to be one of the most beautiful lakes on the east coast. Watauga lake is great for boating, jet-skiing, tubing, skiing/wakeboarding, fishing, swimming, kayaking etc.

Downstream of the dam is a very popular whitewater rafting area as most of the local companies in TN and NC bring their patrons here. Hiking is also very popular as the Appalachain trail and a couple of small waterfalls are nearby. This property is also close to attractions in Boone, Banner Elk and Blowing Rock, NC and also attractions in eastern TN.

We have great sunny summers with no mosquitoes and beautiful fall colors when the leaves change. In the winter time, skiing is a popular option at nearby Sugar and Beech Mountain. This is a spectacular mountain and lake getaway.

Worthy of five stars

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Sugar Hollow. Very private property and a great place to enjoy swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding or just relaxing on the water. A great place for dogs as the property contains pets well. It is not common to find a place that excepts pets as freely as they do and so my advice to potential visitors is to make sure your pets respect their property as well. The home is very comfortable and functional. Make sure you get your food on the way in as there are no local stores and limited gas options. We definitely hope to go back.

Great location, beautiful house

  • 5 of 5

Lovely house in a great location. The house is tucked away in a small, quiet cove, but is still relatively close to the main channel of the lake. Nice, big fridge to hold plenty of food for a week's stay (because it can be quite a trip to the nearest grocery store!). Plenty of room at the dock for a boat, jetski and other water toys. The path from the house to the dock is a nice, gentle slope. There is a boat ramp very close to the house, so you can easily put in your boat, if needed. The wrap-around porch is a great place to sit, have your coffee in the morning, or read a book, or just relax!

We really enjoyed our week at Sugar Hollow Point! We hope to return soon!

Second vacation at this house

  • 5 of 5

This was our second year vacationing at this house and we had another great vacation. This is a beautiful house with plenty of room for our family of six and our dog. The kayaks are wonderful and the kids found a "cliff" on the back side of the peninsula and enjoyed taking the kayaks over there to cliff jump. The dock is plenty large enough to tie up a pontoon. The kitchen has all the equipment you need, although an electric griddle would be nice for making bacon and eggs. The beds in all rooms are very comfortable. The cove is quite with very little boat traffic. The house across the cove is a rental also so there was another family using the cove, but there is plenty of room and you do not feel like you need to share space. It rained every day except one on our 8 day stay. The walk from the deck to the dock got a bit slippery and we had a few falls so some sort of permanent walkway, whether stepping stone, paved walk, or decking with stairs would be nice. Overall, we highly recommend this house.

Great Secluded Location on Fantastic Lake

  • 5 of 5

This was our first full family vacation in a few years as we have 4 boys ranging in ages from 24 to 14. This met and exceeded all of our expectations. From the moment that you walk into the well-stocked kitchen that overlooks the large family room, we could tell this would be a great place to relax for the week. The kitchen had everything you needed (except a spatula). We loved the huge refrigerator/ freezer to hold a week's worth of food and drinks. Don't know if there was a dog here previously, but there was a musty odor on the main level which bothered my wife more than anyone else. The large screen TVs in the living room and the two large bedrooms upstairs were enjoyed as well as all the five reclining chairs in the family room. The sleeping accommodations were great and the beds were very comfortable. It does get warm upstairs if you did not leave the AC on at night. Screens in the doors in the upstairs rooms would have been nice to allow airflow at night. We loved sitting out on the small deck off our bedroom which overlooks the lake and dock area. Also enjoyed spending evenings by the fire pit and did this 5 out of the 6 nights we were there. Some of the benches near the fire pit need to be replaced but the picnic table had plenty of seating. The private dock in the very secluded cove made this property perfect. Rented a pontoon boat from Fish Springs Marina for two days and a paddleboard for one day. Spent hours on the boat tubing and exploring the lake. Took the boat for lunch one day to the Captains Table and were able to park the boat at their dock and walk up to the restaurant. The kayaks at the house were used every day and the quiet cove was perfect for this. The walkway down to the dock and fire pit is rocky and would suggest that you bring some water shoes. The house is very secluded and there isn't shopping close by so you definitely need to plan for that. The roads are extremely winding and can be dangerous at times if you're not used to it.

Suggested areas for possible improvement.

Add Night stands and lamps in the bedrooms to allow for reading.

Provide Beach towels

Upgrade to BluRay players. There were DVD players

Add fixed dining room table-we just left the folding one set up all week.

Paddleboard-after renting for one day, wish we had one to use all week.

Firewood-none available except what we gathered from the property.

Overall, this was a fantastic place to vacation and we will strongly consider staying here again.

Great mountain cabin!

  • 5 of 5

Everything you need! Large refrigerator, nice layout, and quiet location! Highly recommended! Only item that would have improved our stay would have been a way to get back on the dock after jumping into the lake... it is a bit difficult..

Wonderful summer vacation property

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed the peace and tranquility this beautiful property provided. Plenty of room for my family of 5, including 2 older teens, and my father. The 2 kayaks were great for exploring the calm water of the lake; only a handful of boats passed us the entire time. Beautiful views from the wraparound porch. Took advantage of eating at the outdoor covered picnic table (even during a light rain) and using the fire pit for roasting marshmallows. The kitchen was well-equipped. The owners have kindly made improvements to the house based on reviewer comments, including both a standard coffee maker and Keurig at this time, a crock pot, and Wifi Internet access (agree with previous reviewer - access is limited but sufficient for casual use). The office area is nice for those having to catch up on a little work. We enjoyed a few restaurants: Shirley's was pricey, but delicious family-style meals with friendly service (biscuits, meatloaf, mac and cheese, and desserts were our favorites); Big Dan's BBQ in Elizabethton had amazing pulled pork and baked potato salad; Peddlin' Pig in Boone had a neat atmosphere and great BBQ. (Make sure to check the internet for times/days restaurants are open--some are only open on the weekend.) Spent one morning on a leisurely hike at Dennis Cove; nice bridge over the river at the end. This is a great property for boaters: a well maintained, wide concrete boat ramp is adjacent to the property, just yards from the dock. Depth at the dock measured 16 feet, and depth in the cove exceeds 24 feet throughout. Depth in the lake is 50-60 feet up to 200'+. If you want to rent, Fish Springs Marina (a 20 min drive by car or by boat) has well-maintained, reasonably-priced pontoon boats.

Just a few things to know: first, the wood floors are lovely, but they are creaky, especially if anyone gets up at night. Second, the upstairs can warm up quite a bit during the day, so the 2 upstairs bedrooms take a while to cool down at bedtime. Next, it's a great property if you bring your dog, but we didn't and there was wet dog odor in the living room and in the furniture. Last, the water heater has a 38 gallon capacity, so if you're a large group, you'll want to spread out shower times and use of the dishwasher/washing machine so someone doesn't end up with a cold shower!

We are grateful to the owners for making this beautiful home and property available. Jenelle provided very prompt responses. We enjoyed our vacation very much!
