Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

Overview

About the property

Quaint adobe house located at the edge of town for 2-4 guests.

Fun adobe house, featured in the latest photo book "Marfa Modern - Artistic Interiors of the West Texas High Desert", located on the western edge of Marfa with everything you need for a comfy stay in Marfa. This house belongs to a private chef & art collector who carefully restored the adobe himself.

This house is great for up to 4 people.

1 Bedroom downstairs - Queen bed, sleeps two.

1 Loft bedroom upstairs - Full size bed, sleeps two.

Davis Mountain views from some parts of the property.

Great stargazing.

Courtyard with a unique, handmade, fun soaking tub.

Escape the event crowds & noise.

Concrete floors and lofty white ceilings.

You’ll have the best of both Marfa’s: the town's events, restaurants, & music plus the magic of the high desert. While just a short distance from the center of downtown, you’ll be able to escape to spend the evenings stargazing in the back yard or courtyard, or soaking in its outdoor tub.. On cool nights the back patio provides great sunset views.

The neighborhood is "rustically" West Texas - not Beverly Hills.

Inside you’ll find:

Fully air conditioned for the hottest desert days, fully heated for those cold Marfa nights. Remote control air conditioning at your fingertips.

Full kitchen with gas convection range, microwave, concrete countertops, wooden butcher block and plenty of kitchen equipment.

Rain head shower inside full bath.

Lofty ceilings

1 bedroom downstairs with queen bed with comfy sheets and choice of down or fiber filled pillows.

1 Loft bedroom upstairs with a full sized bed with memory foam topper offering fun mountain views over the tops of the studios to the north. A steep set or stairs leads to this space.

Dining room with hand-made dining table also doubles as a great artist space, studio with fine indirect morning light.

Outside you’ll find:

Private courtyard with outdoor soaking tub & comfy seating.

No pets or small children, please. (Though both may be discussed with owner for approval.)

Due to the recent city wide "burn ban", outdoor fires in the fireplace are prohibited at this time.

WIFI - There is no wifi at the house. You should have no problem with AT&T, LTE-4g service for Apple devices such as Iphones and IPads. I am able to send and receive email and texts with no problem at the house and phone service for my AT&T IPhone is no problem at all.

You will find free wifi in the lobby of the Paisano Hotel (207 Highland Street), Frama Coffee (120 N. Austin Street), and the Dairy Queen (704 W. San Antonio Street, Hwy 90)

About Terry Nowell

I bought an adobe ruin in Marfa in 1997 after locating the run-down shell of a house with the help of some friends. I've worked on it for quite a few years attempting to make it into a super comfy retreat at the edge of town in Marfa.

Terry Nowell purchased this house in 1997

Why Terry Nowell chose Big Bend Country

This rustic adobe artist's space allows you to experience the real feel of West Texas yet in an extremely comfortable dwelling.

What makes this house unique

Well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, very unique handmade house.

Clean, beautiful, lots of character

  • 5 of 5

An amazing art filled home great for a Marfa visit. We especially loved discovering all of the little surprises that decorate the place. It is on the edge of town a short distance from the main drag. Getting around Marfa is quick as you are never far from anything so this worked fine for us. Great communication and instructions from the owner/manager to top everything off.

Owner's Response: Having Mason stay in Marfa, from an owner's perspective, was both trouble free and a pleasure. He responded to email communications without delay, he was kindly observant of the house guidelines during his visit and he left the house in great shape when departing. It would be a pleasure to have him visit again at any time.

Nice location, interesting history of home/decor

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at Terry's. The location is at the edge of town, with relatively unobstructed views of the morning skies, and easy access to the Eastern part of the town via the back road that runs directly on the side of the house. We enjoyed early morning runs, and late evening walks to catch the sunrise and sunset respectively. We didn't cook much (we availed ourselves of Marfa's many culinary experiments!), but when we did eat at home, it was easy to find whatever utensils etc. that we needed. The loft space offered a great vantage from which to take in a magnificent thunder/lightening storm that happened while we were there, and the ground interior and exterior spaces provided enough seating to host an impromptu poetry/prose reading as well as to watch the day go by. Our girls enjoyed the tub immensely. The elderly neighbor seemed to take a liking for us, and was quite happy to chat and allow our younger daughter to play with his puppy. All in all, a terrific experience.

Perfect Marfa Adobe

  • 5 of 5

We stayed over Thanksgiving week and had the most wonderful stay. Terry's home provided the perfect place to explore Marfa and the surrounding area. The home is decorated beautifully, having so much character and well thought out design Terry was wonderful and easy to work with. I found this to be the best place in Marfa to stay. You are in for a real treat staying at this home. It also has a wonderful patio and kitchen.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking time to give your comments Melissa. It's a pleasure having people like you stay in my house. The fact that you communicate so well, before, during and after your stay and that you left the house is great shape when leaving, all reflect a caring visitor, one any homeowner would be pleased to have visit. Please to come back for another stay some time.

Absolutely Amazing Artist Home

  • 5 of 5

Really fun and easy to use home. The fact that you can be in the middle of nowhere and still enjoy your weekend is going to get my vote. Well worth it for a artistic minded people.

Would not recommend for family's with young children.

Owners are kind and clear and communicate well. Wouldn't think of staying anywhere else in Marfa.

Nature Lovers Delight

  • 4 of 5

The inside tells a story of an art lover and lover of land. For those who appreciate creations made with love and with one's own hand they will like this sweet space. Architects, artists, chefs and breeze aficionados would delight in this space.

The 2nd bedroom loft is met with a steep ladder so it takes an adventurer's heart to reach these heights. A lot of attention was given to the light and natural elements. It was clean and neat and tidy. I'd describe it as rustic meets gallery meets nature.

The owner expressed clear communication.

There is some clean up (garbage removal and kitchen cleaning) expected but felt reasonable to me.

Location is away from the city action which made it a nice respite but is in a neighborhood.

It was a wonderful place to stay and enjoy and made for a very relaxing stay.

Owner's Response: Visitors like Kate make the often daunting and trying task of renting one's house a pleasure. It's so nice that she noticed even the smallest touches inside the house including artwork as well as in the Marfa surroundings. There was a wine glass accidentally broken (no problem at all) and she made sure I was aware of the issue, even taking time to send photos. This alone stands as testament to her caring and her honesty making her the kind of renter any host would be privileged to have stay in their home. I'd love having her stay again at any time.

Marfa to the T

  • 5 of 5

I 100% enjoyed staying at Terry's little hide away...which is ironic for a city that is already hidden from the rest of the world. The space was very comfortable as well as consistent with marfa-desert vibe. I truly enjoyed getting up in the mornings and laying on the day bed on the back porch and taking in the wonderful view that he is so lucky to have. Even though the house sits farther out of the main part of town, it is still close enough to walk pretty much everywhere...even that lovely and very delicious little Pho shop, Marpho. I highly recommend this place for anyone seeking a little desert hiatus.

Owner's Response: Guests like Courtland make being a VRBO host worthwhile. She was succinctly organized with all communications, timely with responses and followed through with the house rules as suggested. Her people skills are evident in her emails and her positive nature carries over to the caring for her surroundings, leaving my house in great shape upon departure. Any host would be fortunate to have Courtland stay in their home. She is welcome to come back to Marfa at any time.
