|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
Located just off what many consider the most desirable beach on the island, Casa Pagoda is a luxury home perched atop a prominent West Bay ridge providing breathtaking ocean views to both the NORTH and SOUTH and refreshing breezes! With 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms inside, an outdoor bano and shower, 2 kitchens, an indoor game room (garage conversion) and expansive outdoor living spaces, you will lack for neither space or privacy.
This home was not only built for fun and relaxation, but a strong focus was placed on taking full advantage of Roatan's gorgeous views and refreshing breezes. With several spacious tiled decks on each level, a huge patio entertainment area, and an abundance of outdoor furniture, everywhere you turn is a spectacular space that beckons.
With a uniquely Asian flair, Casa Pagoda is a departure from the familiar island design. The rich colors and warm finishes feel exotic in a totally original way. Although it is richly embellished with many fine features and quality elements, there are still many charming reminders that 'island hands were at work here.'
The open concept main floor is the 'indoor heart' of this island home and has soaring ceilings anchored by a huge center island with seating. With gorgeous granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances, you will find every modern convenience of home in this spacious kitchen. Also part of the main floor are the living and dining rooms. The living room is furnished with a TV and seating group, while the formal dining area offers even more options to gather. Completing the main floor is a conveniently located half bath just off the kitchen.
Two sets of double French doors open to the huge main deck which provide a beautiful northern ocean view. There is little doubt you will spend plenty of time socializing here! The second main floor deck on the opposite side of the room is just off the kitchen and offers a southern ocean view toward West Bay Beach. It also overlooks the expansive outdoor entertainment area where you will be enamored by the ambiance created with lovely palm trees, the impressive waterfall and built-in grotto large enough for a group, as well as the festive island bar. The dart board and ping pong table will give those who have had enough 'down time' something active to do. Adjacent to the bar is a gas grill, perfect for cooking up your own 'catch of the day'! Can't you just see yourself there?!
Back inside, you will discover the entire upper level is reserved for the spacious master suite. Feeling as if you could touch the sky from the private deck, you will relish a breathtaking ocean view and you might just be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a majestic cruise shop as it sails back out to sea! The large master bath is handsomely appointed with a slate covered double vanity, a vaulted/beamed ceiling and a cavernous bath/shower with both standard and ceiling spray fixtures. And offering yet another stunning ocean view is a strategically placed picture window....we just couldn't help ourselves! You will also find a beamed/vaulted ceiling accented with coconut matting in the bedroom, and with plenty of closet space, a TV and personal water cooler - you are bound to feel spoiled in this lovely and comfortable private space.
Finally, the lower level which spills to the outdoor entertainment area, offers 3 guest bedrooms, a common area with sleeper sofa, chairs, and TV as well as a full bathroom and convenient kitchenette. We believe you will sleep with comfort on the quality mattresses and appreciate the blackout curtains when the sun rises a little earlier than you were expecting! The largest guest bedroom offers a comfortable nook with built-in desk and shelves for those who need to sneak in a bit of work time.
The kitchenette will come in especially handy for morning breakfast rituals or late night snacks. It offers a small counter top oven/burner unit, microwave, frig, sink, coffee maker and is stocked with most commonly used kitchen equipment.
The roomy bathroom will not disappoint as it also has a slate top vanity, and spacious walk through tile shower with both standard and ceiling mount spray fixtures. Your group will have the advantage of being under one roof, yet enjoy the comfort of having your own spaces.
Some of the additional comforts and conveniences at Casa Pagoda include newer A/C units, on-site washer and dryer, 2 VCR's, security system with cameras, internet, cable for the 3 TV's, and a back-up generator. It is not unheard of that the island looses power occasionally due to routine maintenance, safety concerns or storms. Keep in mind, typically when power is out, there is no way to operate the pumps which provide the water service !
Our long-trusted friend and property manager, Gabriel, is a warm, good-natured islander who speaks excellent English and will be delighted to orient you to the property. He is eager to assist you with any specific needs and can also be contacted for emergencies during your stay. (and no, running out of beer does notconstitute an emergency!)
We are the Grams family from Overland Park, Kansas; Brent, Lisa and our 2 lively boys; Aidan 12, and Easton 9. We both grew up in a small town in Missouri called Raytown, though we didn't meet until years later.
My husband has a traveler's soul and a dreamer's heart, and so began his Roatan journey over 15 years ago. It was on a dive trip that he encountered destiny...a lonely 'lot for sale' sign nestled in the white sands of West Bay Beach, which at the time was barely populated. After a leap of faith and unwavering determination, Brent purchased the lot and began construction on his first house, 'Casa Carnival.' At the time, it was one of the only visible structures along the shoreline of West Bay and still stands next to the Henry Morgan resort. It was a very popular rental home and we enjoyed years of serving our wonderful guests from around the world. As the beach grew in popularity, we decided to retreat just a bit - in favor of more peace and privacy...and let's face it, to get away a bit from the constant task of managing sandy messes and sometimes voracious insects! What we didn't realize was how much we would come to appreciate what elevation does, not only to provide a respite from the elements, but to bring an exciting new perspective of the gorgeous area scenery. Despite the many challenges of building and living on a remote island, our love for Roatan and it's people has only grown.
Lisa Grams purchased this house in 2006
Time after time, we have encountered people who have settled in Roatan after having been all over the world...some in search of fun, some in search of business development, some in search of investment opportunities and yet others for a place to retire. And time after time, we hear similar stories...nothing quite compared to the total package they found in Roatan. Factors such as the climate, affordability, proximity to the reef, the charm, diversity, the friendly people, and naturally the beauty continue to draw people who could live just about anywhere. And West Bay Beach in particular has earned the reputation of being 'that perfect beach on that perfect island.' It has bit of everything and yet not too much of anything.
So, like so many others - we have found our 'one-of-a-kind' island, now we feel like we have built our 'one-of a kind' house ! Guests have said that Casa Pagoda feels like a clandestine resort. Yet, you can reach West Bay Beach within a 10-15 minute walk or 1-2 minute drive...that is the beauty of it! This home was built using imagination, passion and a little more self-indulgence than practicality! We wanted it to be both comfortable for groups and families to gather, yet offer plenty of opportunity for intimacy and solitude. And because it was recently renovated, the home feels nearly brand new.
Casa Pagoda is close to the major Roatan hubs including West End, the airport/Coxen Hole and Flowers Bay, one of two cruise ships ports which offers local flavor, color, shopping and markets.
After having a home on the beach for years, we decided to experience what others who had moved off the beach were raving about...the benefits of being close to the beach, but not ON the beach. Now, with precious privacy restored, panoramic views, exhilarating trade winds, and the luxury of enjoying an expansive outdoor entertainment area without the voracious sand flies and sand to clean up...we are glad we did !
We hope you will be in awe of the dramatic light-up waterfall and grotto (with group seating and a built-in reservoir for ice/beer!) the palm trees, the festive outdoor bar with electric service, and the 4 separate decks! (2 extra large with plenty of table/seating options, and 2 smaller decks designed more for private moments) With all of these amenities and this resort-like atmosphere, Casa Pagoda is not only unique for the Roatan residential market, but it's proximity to West Bay Beach makes it a true 'one-of-a-kind' !! You can have the best of both worlds right here!
1. Gabrial is all that and way more, he was awesome to deal with, punctual, honest, a great person, we even met his family as they joined us for dinner one night. Gabe found us some fresh sea food and I grilled it up...it was a very nice evening and they are great people.
2. the house was wonderful. It was as advertised and more, the vistas were awesome, it was so quiet, when the clouds parted(maybe twice) the nights were just wonderful. L walked the roads every day and Jo went with her a couple of times, they felt safe, never had an incident...it was all really really good. the layout is very cool, had we travelled with the kids it is a perfect layout. With the separate living area downstairs then the space on the main floor, tough to beat.
3. The place was very clean and well presented, it had everything that we needed plus...The balconies and views are just awesome, almost has to be seen to be appreciated.
4. The Island itself, well we are planning on returning in 2017 to look for a property to maybe build on, we are spending our downtime now researching...that is what we thought of the Island...I liken it to Cozumel 15-20 years ago, sleepy, laid back, great people, safe, a place that I can see us parking some money in the coming years. This was the first vacation that I have been on that I can honestly say without hesitation that I was sad to see end. Usually after 4 days I am pacing, anxiously awaiting the flight home...this time I was sad to go...it felt like home. Despite the weather(see #5)
5. The weather was awful, I think we caught the outer edges of Hurricane Otto, so it rained pretty much every day and most days it rained all day...we dove and we wandered around in West End, and on what was the best weather day we toured the Island with Gabe...despite the weather still a 12 on a scale of 1-10.
6. Gabe, well he gave us a tour of the Island one day and it was awesome, we saw some amazing beaches that were deserted, I suspect a combination of weather and low season...but stunning beaches none the less. We just toured the entire Island to get a feel for it...and the feeling was positive in the strongest terms. Gabe and his kids gave us a pretty good sense of the people on the island, but it seemed that everywhere we went people were welcoming and warm and friendly, and not in that I am about to extract money from you way...it really seemed like a genuine warmth...the place was awesome.
7. The negatives...well negative...the stairs in the house
I stayed at this home with my Husband, Son(22), Daughter, Son-in-law, and 6 year old Grandson in January 2016. We had a wonderful time and the house had plenty of room for all of us! We walked to the gorgeous beach daily (great snorkeling) and felt very safe in the private neighborhood. It was clean and pretty! We had a wonderful vacation! The rental process with the homeowners was seamless!
We were greeted at the airport by Gabriel (House manager) and another gentleman, in two small Suvs. They took us to a grocery store before arriving at the house (helpful!). Gabriel walked us through the home and answered any questions we had about the area. Gabriel was always a phone call away and often provided us transportation as well as advice on activities. My daughter and Grandson and I had a wonderful evening with his sister Rosemary and her children at a drumming and dancing gathering, for many locals, on the other side of the island. Gabriel and his family are very warm and a great bonus to renting this home!
The home has 3 bedrooms down stairs that are perfect for a couple to stay with their young kids or older children to have a little privacy. It even had a kitchenette and bathroom all contained in the bottom level. The master bedroom is on the third floor up a round steep staircase. It has a private bathroom and large bedroom area with a little balcony that has a very nice view of the water. All of the rooms have air conditioners that cool quickly and we left them off when not in the home. The kitchen and living area are on the middle floor and very open for the whole family to hang out in.
Gabriel's sister Rosemary, cooked many delicious meals for us during our stay and kept our kitchen spotless! If she is available, I highly suggest using Rosemary in the kitchen. She even babysat for our grandson one night when we all went out! I really enjoyed her company and loved that she took great care of all of us!
Upon arrival we were slightly disappointed in the outdoor patio area because it was in need of some repairs and straightening. Gabriel quickly saw to this as soon as we complained. We didn't use the patio much. We often found ourselves sitting outside on the balcony off of the kitchen,it was very nice and spacious!
We would stay in the home again for sure! Use the neighbors Jay and Lavinna for diving (they were great!) I would not suggest this home for people of poor health, elderly, or a family with toddlers because of the stairs
Casa Pagoda is a beautiful, super clean, well cared for home in perfect location. We stayed for a week over Easter. I wish it could have been longer. Gabriel, who maintains the house is a wonderful person. He is helpful and kind and extremely reliable. I don't think our first trip to Roatan would have gone as well without his help. He met us at the airport, took us back to the airport and he also took us on an amazing tour of the whole island. His sister Rosemary also cooked two very delicious evening meals. She took care of getting all of the ingredients locally and it was such a pleasure to come from our day at the sea to a wonderful, home cooked dinner. Both she and Gabriel are charming people. The house is really classy and secure! I wish I owned it. It is close enough to the beach but we didn't have to worry about the unpleasantry beach bugs and sandy beds. It has beautiful balconies with luxury furnishings. The bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and living area are very nice. This house is a short walk to the beach, ATM, restaurants and shopping. We enjoyed Beachers -3 lobsters, salad and mashed potatoes for $18! In the back of the house, there is a meadow that leads to one of the most beautiful views that I have ever seen --of the sea rushing on to volcanic rock formations.
The owners are responsive, helpful and very reputable. I would give this vacation home 10 Stars.
I stayed here with 8 other people as part of a workation trip! The house gorgeous, with views of the ocean on both sides framed by the trees. It's position on the ridge gives it wonderfully refreshing breezes pretty much all day long. The house itself is well appointed and everything easy to find. The kitchen is well stocked with gear, and makes cooking even for a large group easy and social. The Master bedroom is gorgeous, and has fantastic views - even from the shower! AC works really well throughout the house from wall mounted units, and is especially helpful when cooking.
It's about a 10-15 min walk from the beach, and from there a $3 water taxi to the West End (where most of the bars are). We ended up staying here without renting a car. Gabriel - the caretaker - helped us with airport trips, and picking up groceries (for an extra fee), which took care of most of our transit needs, and then we took cabs for the rest.
We all loved diving with West Bay Divers - they were super friendly and 4 members of our team got open water certified during our trip! Diving here is fantastic. The coral is beautiful, and the marine life is abundant.
If you've got any accessibility issues, there are a lot of stairs here, and main spiral in the middle can be a bit steep. That said, it's beautiful, so worth it if you can walk up stairs :)
If you don't like local animal noises, bring some ear-plugs. There are some frogs which live in the waterfall, and sing at night. I found it relaxing and proof that I was out of the city.
WiFi is pretty decent for an island. I wouldn't plan on streaming lots of movies, but we did relatively well with that and a few MiFis for 9 people working concurrently. A bit slow, but workable, and at least when we were there, there weren't government mandated data caps to add extra data to your mobile devices. You can get a local sim card with data for relatively cheap at Captain Van's in the West End Mall - though I received a lot of random text messages in spanish.
Lisa is super responsive - and was awesome about letting us stay on short notice. You can tell that they really love this house, and that they've put a great deal of attention into making sure it's wonderful for everyone who stays here. Gabriel is super friendly and knowledgable, and was super helpful!
I would heartily recommend this house to my friends, family and co-workers who might be interested in Roatan!
We had our choice of many hotels near West Bay Beach, but a friend told us to look on VRBO for alternatives, since there were 3 couples and we might be able to save money by staying in one property. We chose Casa Pagoda just based on the pictures and hoped for the best, and that's exactly what we got! As it turned out Casa Pagoda sits on top of the ridge at the tip of the island, so you get the best of all worlds. You can easily walk to West Bay Beach from the house, as well as any number of bars and restaurants. the owners gave us access to the house vehicle, so we were also able to do some sight-seeing, go to the grocery store, and also spend 2 nights out at West End.
Casa Pagoda had everything we needed- 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a full kitchen, a kitchenette in the lower level, a bar, plus a waterfall bar, decks everywhere, and one of the the most beautiful views on the island. We saw a red macaw and a toucan in the tree just off the LR deck! In the afternoon, you are cooled off by a breeze from the windward side, and at dusk, you can see the beautiful lit-up cruise ships go by. You can see both bays from both sides of the master suite...2 nights we just sat on the decks drinking wine and enjoying the beautiful weather and shooting stars. The property is just off the main road, but sits back in the tress with just a few other quiet single family homes. Casa Pagoda is 20 minutes from the airport, about 10 minutes from the bar district, and you can also walk to West Bay beach with tons of restaurants and bars (we highly recommend "Vintage Pearl" for both food and live music!).
All in all, we found the perfect place and will try to make it an annual event. If you don't like the expense, crowds, and noise of hotels, I highly recommend Casa Pagoda. With three couples, and by cooking in a few nights and drinking local beers and wine, we saved a ton of money AND stayed in a property that was far more beautiful and enjoyable than a hotel!
We (a group of 5) stayed at Casa Pagoda from November 8-15, 2014. If you want to feel like you are in paradise, this is the place for your next vacation! This was my first trip to Honduras and did not know what to expect. All I can say is…WOW! The house itself is amazing. The owner’s description of everything is spot on. The kitchen and open concept living space is amazing. A restroom on every floor and outside was very convenient. The showers were great. All the bedrooms were spacious and very accommodating. You only had to run the a/c if you were too hot sleeping. (I have never had a more comfortable bed to sleep on away from home!) But enough about the inside—the outside is where it’s at! You will want to be outdoors the entire time you are there! The only time we were inside was to shower or to sleep! I can honestly say we never even turned on a TV! This property was like having your own little oasis. There were so many decks with amazing views it was hard to decide which one to sit on! The first thing I did when I got up, was to go sit on one of the decks (I tried them all) and just stared at the breath taking views of the ocean and Roatan. The weather was wonderful—about 85 degrees every day. West Bay Beach is less than a 5 minute car ride away! (If you are adventurous a 15 minute walk.) There are lots of bars/restaurants on the beach, too. Take advantage of a massage on the beach--$20 for an hour—I’m not kidding!! The beach itself was so serene and the water was calm every day. So calm in fact, we took rafts and just floated in the warm water. (I was in Cancun at the same time the previous two years and the water was so rough you were constantly getting knocked down by waves!) We spent a couple of evenings at West Bay Beach and an evening at West End Beach, but most nights we were back at the house drinking and playing games on the outside deck off the kitchen or enjoying the patio/waterfall area or outside bar. The evening breezes were welcoming after being in the sun all day and were the reason you could stay outside all evening! There is a high fence around the outside area so we really did feel like we were in our own little resort!! If you need anything, Gabriel (property manager) is your guy! He is the nicest, friendliest, most helpful person you can depend on while staying at Casa Pagoda. I can’t wait to go back!!
West Bay Beach is commonly considered the most desirable Roatan destination for it's stunning soft powder beaches, close proximity to the reef, wide range of restaurants, endless activities, shopping and ease of access. You cab find a myriad of activities on West Bay Beach including: snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, boating excursions, fishing, jet ski rental, para-sailing, glass bottom boat tours, under water sub craft, horse back riding, massages, dining and night life.
Bananarama, an especially popular West Bay spot has weekly crab races for charity, karaoke, and a huge inflatable floating movie screen for weekly movies during many months! Beachers has a very fun staff, excellent dinner specials and will allow you to use their beach loungers if you are patronizing their establishment. Island Pearl has more of a 'fine-dining' experience and the food and service are typically excellent.
West Bay Mall, just down the road has an excellent deli, a wonderful coffee/wine bar with pastries, a video rental store, an ATM, and a couple of gift stores.
A zip line canopy tour is very close by, as well as several scenic stops for world class photo ops !
About a 10-15 minute car ride brings you to West End which is abound with shops, restaurants and a robust night life. Sundowners is famous for it's large expat crowds and weekly trivia, while The Blue Marlin has a very popular karaoke night that brings people in by the droves.
There are also many options for those who want a bit more adventure. Many charter services will take you to gorgeous local keys and other points of interest, often with drinks and meals included. The Hole in the Wall is a clandestine bar on stilts that can be reached by dory after navigating through tunnels of Mangrove trees in Jonesville. Sunday is typically 'All You Can Eat' steak and lobster!
