Overview

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2.5 Batrhooms, Sleeps 6

'Casa de las Mariposas' is a stunning villa overlooking the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica near Ojochal. The home features luxury amenities inside and out! The home has approximately 180 sq. meters of indoor living area and 180 sq. meters of terrace. Fully air conditioned, private pool and hot tub. Private staff on grounds provide daily breakfast, towel service and mid week linen service.

The spacious and airy great room, dining room, and bedrooms have doors that completely open allowing pacific breezes to cool the home. The tropical decor was custom made with the finest craftsmanship.

The kitchen has the most modern appliances and cookware. Granite counters throughout with high counter and bar stools. The indoor dining table seats eight.

Outside, you can relax around the pool, swim or, soak in the spa. The gazebo features a BBQ grill, sink, beverage refrigerator and a table for four.

One side of the great room features the master bedroom suite with queen bed, large walk-in shower, dual sinks and walk-in closet. The guest side of the home has two roomy bedrooms each with a queen bed. The guest bedrooms share a common bathroom with shower.

We are very proud of your two caretakers, Tono and his wife Flora. They do an amazing job keeping the villa in perfect condition as well as providing a great breakfast each morning. They only speak Spanish but if you do not, you can communicate with Google Translate via the computer in the kitchen.

The house is very secluded. We have our own small banana and coffee plantation as well as cocoa, coconut, mango, lemon, tangerine, orange and papaya and many other trees. Most of the trees are labeled.

We have tried to make your travel as easy as possible by providing a pack-n-play and high chair for young children and beach toys for the older ones including, boogie boards, beach chairs etc.

Some of the finest restaurants in southern Costa Rica can be found a short drive from the home.

Outdoor activities abound within a short distance from the house including beaches, surfing, sea kayaking, mangrove and ocean kayaking, zip lining, hiking, birding, waterfalls, ATV tours, and canyoning.

The villa sits 8.1 Km off the main highway up a gravel road that requires four wheel drive much of the year. It can be a very rugged drive depending on the season and the condition of the road. It takes about 20-30 minutes. It is a beautiful drive and is well worth it for the views, mountain breezes, wildlife and seclusion.

About Steven and Laura Maves

We live in Indiana, USA and have three grown boys. We began building this home in April of 2011 and complete the construction in May of 2014.

Steven and Laura Maves purchased this villa in 2011

Why Steven and Laura Maves chose Costa Rica

The views of the pacific ocean are truly special. The home is very secluded and surrounded by tropical forest and wildlife including monkeys, parrots, toucans, anteaters and the occasional sloth.

The eight kilometer drive from the coastal highway takes about 20 minutes and requires four wheel drive most times of the year. Due to the amazingly scenic drive down the mountain, it requires about 30 minutes to get to the nearest beaches and restaurants.

Flora will make the beds daily and change the sheets mid-week. She will clean towels as needed. All electricity in the home is provided by a grid tied solar panel system. We try to minimize our impact on the environment by washing towels only as needed (left on floor) and producing all the electricity to run the home.

A place of luxury and stunning beauty.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week here and wished we could have stayed longer! It simply was a week of luxury.

The house itself is in a fabulous location and is very comfortable. The exterior, well it's hard to find words that describe it well enough! The pool is perfect. Surrounded by gorgeous views, flowers and birds. To have control of the pool heating and lights is great too. There are many shaded areas to sit down in and enjoy the views.

It was lovely to be treated to a delicious Costa Rican breakfast every morning by Flora. Indeed, it was nice to know that Flora and Tono were there to answer any questions we had. They were very friendly.

We went to a couple of the restaurants recommended by Steve and our favorite was La Parcela. The food and the views there are fantastic.

The road leading to the house was fine in our 4x4. No problem at all.

I hope we will be lucky enough to stay here again one day.

Beautiful house and views!

  • 5 of 5

This house is just like the pictures presented. Flora and Tono (house managers) where awesome and always helped when needed even making yummy breakfast! Steven, you really built a great house on an amazing property with wonderful sunsets and views! We enjoyed every minute we stayed there especially with the dogs greeting us, my son loved them and stayed in the pooled as much as possible. We did the atv jungle ride to the waterfall which was a lot of fun and visited the whales tail. Steven, the information you sent was right on and very helpful. I would say to make sure you put the gps coordinates in your phone because the road is hard to find and make sure you rent a 4 wheel drive for the ride up, the view makes it all worth it!

Amazing Views

  • 5 of 5

The property and views are absolutely breath taking. We had a fabulous week at this home. The breakfasts provided by Flora each morning were delicious. We do not speak much Spanish but the computer provided at the house allowed us to chat with Flora and Tono (property managers); they are a very nice couple and we also enjoyed their friendly dogs.

We went on an ATV tour (ATV Jungle Tour in Uvita) and also visited Nauyaca Falls (4 km walk, not too difficult), as well as several different beaches mentioned in Steve's renter's guide (which was very helpful). We had great meals at Baker's Bean (pizza in Uvita), Citrus & Exotica (in Ochojal).

The ride up to the house does take a good 20 minutes, and the last 2 km encounters some fairly steep hills. However, it really is worth the drive to get the stunning views.

Thanks to Steve and his family for sharing their lovely home with us.

GOD beauty in all its glory

  • 5 of 5

I am going to try not to ramble. My wife and I have been to CR five times in the last two years and have rented 5 - 8k plus houses per week the past four times. All between Manuel Antonio down to Coronado. (BY the way with much harder drives up the mountain) I was worried because everyone said hard drive. If you have been to CR this is not a bad drive off of 34. OK back to the home. All the other homes had 5-6 bedrooms, gorgeous decor, privacy, elevators, etc. All though not as big as others Steve is short changing himself on the rent. The home was beautiful, furniture, tile, pool, outdoor living, home layout, privacy galore, flowers, you can go on and on. Bugs minimal especially being in a jungle.

Steve I want to personally thank you for offering a tremendous value on a home that is EVERY bit worth more. The only thing that was upsetting was the fact we had to leave.

P.S. The dogs made it extra special. When we got home at night they would greet us just as excited as we were to see them.

Our very best,

Richard and Nancy

LUXURY VILLA

  • 3 of 5

Villa is luxury, well equipped, breathtaking views, but the location required a very skilled driver and a 4x4 car.

Unbelievable mountaintop retreat

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at Steve's place the first week in March 2016 and I should start off by saying the pictures and description are spot on. In fact, the pictures don't and can't possibly capture the beauty of the villa or the surrounding outdoor space. All materials and design were that of a top-end custom resort home and it seemed that no expense was spared with the custom detail inside and out. All this sitting on top of a remote mountain top in the southern coastal area miles away from anything touristy. If you are looking for a private paradise, this is the place. While you'll see a few other villas on the drive up, once you arrive, the mountain top is all yours. But, the place does have caretakers living down the hill a little and they share the same private drive. You can see their rooftop if you go to the side of the villa and look between some of the landscaping. Tono and Flora are a lovely local couple and couldn't be more hospitable. I was concerned at first that this close proximity would interfere with our desire for complete privacy, but outside of Flora coming in and preparing breakfast every morning, we never saw them. Although Tono could be reached if needed, they kept their distance. Side note: Flora does not knock or announce her arrival in the morning when she comes in to prepare breakfast. A little startling at first since we didn't know the protocol, but we looked forward to waking up to her quietly working her magic in the kitchen every morning at 8:00, starting off with a fresh pot of coffee. This is not just bagels and juice! But a large fresh local fruit plate, some version of eggs, breakfast meat, beans and rice, orange juice, milk and coffee. Fantastic local fare!

Back to the privacy thing (important to us). The mountain top is yours! The entire pool hot tub area is swim suit optional.

The drive up: We ended up driving up the mountain just after sunset, and it started raining. It was an exhilarating drive, but we had a full size 4x4 which handled it just fine.

Weather: It can get foggy in the evenings that prevents a sunset, but on some evenings the sunset was spectacular.

WIFI: Had a consistent strong connection.

Technically: Overall everything worked perfectly.

Pests: We had no unwanted guests. Not buggy at all and we kept the doors open all of the time. No need for AC, as the temps were perfect.

Can’t say enough how satisfied we were, and look forward to our next visit.
