3 Bedroom Timber Frame on a Quiet Cove; Nestled by Mountain, Forest and Beach
Herons Return is a traditional timber frame cottage, with two queen bedrooms, and one with the option of 2 twin beds or a bunkbed for children. Perfect for up to 3 couples, or a family. A fully equipped gourmet kitchen, large living room with 180 degree views of the mountains, forest and cove, a large covered deck and a sundeck with a four person hot tub overlooking the cove are exclusively yours during your stay. Please note that the posted rates are for one couple. Additional guests/bedrooms are extra.
Sechelt inlet is a calm inland sea with starfish, seals, crabs and shellfish right in the cove. Our timber frame home is on the ocean front in the peaceful community of Tuwanek on the Sunshine Coast of BC. Nestled on the shores of Lamb Bay at the foot of Mount Richardson it offers a retreat from the world; a great place for a romantic escape, or to rejuvenate with family or friends.
There are four bedrooms, each with a unique configuration. You can choose the three that best suit your family or group needs. The master bedroom looks out to the cove, beach and across the inlet. It has a queen size bed, skylights to watch the stars, and a private deck for two. The other queen room has views of the cove, beach and mountain. The third room, with two twin beds, looks up to the mountain on one side and out to the forest on the other. The fourth bedroom has a bunk bed with easy stairs to the top bunk, and looks into the forest through windows and a skylight.
All of the rooms come with high quality linens, puffy duvets, and a choice of pillows.
There are two bathrooms. The main floor bathroom includes a shower. Upstairs is a spa bath with shower and soaker tub for two. The WC upstairs is separate from the 'spa bath' so as not to disturb long soaks in the tub.
On the main floor the gourmet kitchen is custom built of alder wood by a local craftsman. It is fully equipped to cook your catch from the cove or craft a romantic meal from produce gathered at the local farmers markets. There are roasting and baking pans, serving dishes and place setting for eight. The kitchen island and eating bar let the family and friends gather while the 'chefs of the day' do their thing. The dining table expands out to comfortably seat six but also folds down for a romantic dinner for two.
The open living area is surrounded by windows to capture light and views of the cove, beach and mountain. It is heated by a wood burning stove (wood is supplied) as well as an energy efficient heat pump. A media/massage room with flat screen TV, Apple TV is also on the main floor. WiFi connection, Optik TV and Netflix are complimentary.
Outside are four decks. The covered deck is a great space for all seasons. The sitting area under the covered deck is like an outdoor living room, a cozy space for friends to gather watch the wildlife in the cove, and take in amazing sunsets. In winter we love to cozy up with a blanket and mug of tea to watch weather come down the mountain, and cormorants and herons fishing in the cove. In summer is it a shaded place to marvel at the humming birds battling over the bird feeder and eagles soaring overhead. In fall we can see into the clear water to watch seals and schools of salmon visit the cove. We can barbecue in all seasons under the sheltered deck (Propane supplied).
The outdoor dining table has seating for six and is well placed to take in the sunsets. The herb pots grow year round and for you to add to your meals.
Down a few stone steps is a sun deck with a warm outdoor shower and a hot tub looking out to the islets. Bath robes and extra large hot tub towels are supplied.
From this deck private stairs lead down to the beach. Beach chairs and umbrella are available. Kayak rentals are right next door at Pedals and Paddles. There is also car access to the beach just down the main road.
In the front is a sitting area for two placed to capture the morning light on the mountain and cove. This year we are building a healing garden in the front.
Upstairs off the master bedroom is a romantic balcony built for two.
The cottage is a traditional timber frame with fir posts and knee braces, 14 ft ceilings upstairs and fir flooring. The posts and braces are entirely structural. The stairs are made from one tree. Iron work on the stairs was designed by a local artist and welder.
Soak up majestic ocean views and sunsets serenaded by frogs in Lamb Creek. Watch salmon and seals in the cove and eagles and herons overhead. Walk down your private stairs to one of the best swimming and kayaking beaches o the coast. Pamper yourself with a soak in the hot tub nestled in the hillside overlooking the inlet and its islands. In the evening gaze at the stars, mesmerized by the sound of the waves tickling the shore.

About Sandy Evans and Bill Gordon
We are a family of five living in Alberta. Bill and Sandy fell in love with Tuwanek when out for their 10th wedding anniversary. The mild winters, calm inland sea and abundance of wildlife drew us in. Both of us work in mental health and really know the value of time to relax, connect and rejuvenate. The tranquility of this area and the down to earth community is just right for us. We promptly started looking for a waterfront property to build our dream. We camped on the land for a few years before we knew exactly where to place the cottage. Our three children have grown up spending holidays learning to swim and kayak in the cove, exploring the amazing rain forest, and learning to fish and catch crabs. Their memories are of seal rescues, paddling through schools of salmon, the day an orca came in the inlet, visiting 'the starfish family' there every year on the same rocks, watching a bear fishing in the cove, and dark sky nights marvelling at the abundance of stars. Now as a family with busy teenagers, we come out to Herons Return to spend time together, play games, cook, eat, hike, swim, kayak, ski in winter, and just slow down to watch the natural world around us.

Why Sandy Evans and Bill Gordon chose Tuwanek
The Sunshine Coast is a hidden gem on the West Coast of BC. The winter is a wonderful mild break from prairie cold and snow. In the winter you can ski in the morning up in the mountains and kayak or golf later in the afternoon. Spring comes full on at the end of January! The community is full of arts, culture, and music. There are always festivals, fairs and events to take in. We find there is something for everyone here - crafts, art and music, lots of opportunities to explore nature from active adventures to gentle strolls, there is an abundance of peace, quiet and stars. As a couple we love the time to rejuvenate, the romantic dinners in town and at home. As a family, we love the spaces in the cottage for each of us to have time for ourselves and to have time together.
What makes this Cottage unique
Herons Return is right next to 40 acres of forest with water front on one of the best kayaking and swimming beaches in the area. The water on the cove is often like glass. The property is near the end of the road with protected marine and mountain parks just moments away. It is a great place to unwind. Our neighbours - some resident all year round, others like ourselves make this our holiday place, all fully appreciate the surroundings and work to create a kind, friendly place to live. From the moment we bought the property we have been asked when we are moving out full time. Sadly for us, commitments in Alberta will keep us here for a few more years. Happy for our guests, we strongly feel that this place is just too good not to share!

A roomy and cozy venue, with excellent location.
This unit is very attractive, and it's a key feature that it is on the water-front. The place is roomy, and allows some separation for visitors when desired. The view is beautiful and the hot-tub is a nice touch. Close proximity to the incredibly attractive hiking at "Hidden Grove" is a bonus, as is having a supplier of rental-kayaks. Also, the wood fireplace was immensely appreciated on chilly spring evenings. We ended really enjoying Sechelt. My wife also enjoyed the kitchen space which allowed visiting at the many nearby seats, while we could prepare our own meals. We'll almost certainly try to go back.
Beautiful place with everything you need
Great house, location and amenities. Bonice was extremely friendly and helpful. She went above and beyond to help us out and even mailed us a toy my daughter left behind. Will definitely be back.
This is my dream cottage. Well appointed; comfortable, lots of room. Superb architecture. Easy to get to, yet private. Luxury at a reasonable price!
Absolutely beautiful property!
This was a wonderful weekend getaway with my boyfriend and both sets of parents. Plenty of room for all six of us and it was great not to have to worry about bringing towels or linens as everything was provided. My boyfriend is a chef so the kitchen got a lot of use. There was everything there that you could want. We especially enjoyed the hot tub and close proximity (5 min walk) to where we could rent kayaks. My only wish was that we could stay longer!
We are so glad you enjoyed it!
Outstanding property in an idyllic location.
High quality facilities, homely feel and well maintained. Private access to beach. Would recommend kayak rental close by. Photos on the site do not do justice to this property!
We were a group of friends hang out over the sea from Vancouver, this was our first time road trip together and we had a wonderful memory overthere. The house supplied all stuffs that the owner is very thoughtful for the guests. And the location is very good which just beside the beach. I already highly recommend to my friends, and we will definitely go back again sometime in summer!
The Sunshine Coast is a fantastic natural area full of walking trails through coastal rain forest, up sunny mountain peaks, and along pristine coastline. Lamb Cove is at the start of pristine marine park. A seal rookery and wilderness campsites are close to our cove.
Hidden Grove forest trails are just down the road.
The Chaudier dive site has world class diving only a few minutes away.
Porpoise Bay provincial park hosts astronomy nights, easter egg hunts, great shore fishing and a sandy swimming beach. In fall they have great spots to watch the salmon run. We love the walking trails at Hidden Grove, Secret Cove, Smuggler Cove to name a few. There is a great easy hike into Skookumchuk Rapids up by Egmont (60 mins drive) said to have some of the most abundant marine life in the world - not to mention crazy kayakers surfing 7 foot standing waves. Arts and Music festivals abound. Some of our favourites are: Sleepy Hollow with its vintage car show and shine, the Writer's Festival, Painted boat festival in Madeirra Park, Sea Cavalcade in Gibsons, Chamber music and Jazz festivals throughout the summer, and local and national musicians frequenting local venues. Arts and Craft fairs in the summer and before Christmas. Artisans can be found up and down the entire coast.
Favourite picnic spots are Roberts Creek, Coopers Green near Half Moon Bay, and quiet beaches just a short kayak up the inlet from our own beach. Kayaks and Stand up Paddleboards can be rented from Pedals and Paddles - literally next door to our cottage. (You can wade over at low tide). They also offer SUP Yoga and guided kayak tours.
For special dinners out we head to the Blue Heron Restaurant, Daphnes, or the Gum Boot. Further away is the Painted Boat - a very special treat.
We also love the coffee shops and bakeries here - check out the Daily Roast, the Strait (in Wilson Creek), and the Bakery in Sechelt.
Davis Bay is great for fishing off the pier, wandering along the beach at low tide, the polar bear swim New Years Day, and Sand castle competition in the summer. (The pier shops there also have great ice cream and fish tacos!)
In winter we cross country ski at Dakota Ridge. Often when it is rainy on the beach, the snowy trails on the ridge are in beautiful sunshine. The snow is similar to that in the Whistler area. Check out Alpha Tours for transport up the ridge and for rentals. For the more adventurous and experienced, Tetrahedron Park is a great place to explore, but best to go with a guide as this is more severe backcountry terrain.
BC Sail tours will take you up the inlet for a great sailing experience.
There are a number of fishing charters in Sechelt and along the coastal highway.
In Sechelt itself is Totem Park, the Museum and Ravens Cry theatre. The local Coast Sailish Native Indian band has a rich heritage and culture here that is well worth checking out. Tlaysay Tours offers great insight into this.
We also save time for a trip into Gibsons. This is the nearest town to the ferry from Vancouver. It is also where the Beachcombers TV show was filmed. Molly's Reach is still serving great food and show memorabilia.
Check out the Sunshine Coast Olive Company And ShadowBlix farms - local herbs and produce.
On Saturdays throughout the year the main street in Sechelt shuts down to traffic and the local farmers bring in their wares. Tip - don't eat breakfast before you go to the market - you will be well tempted with all of the fantastic baked goods, local preserves, and fresh produce. Healing balms, and crafts from local artisans and writers are also found at the market.
The recreation centre in Sechelt has a fun lazy river, water slide, pool with climbing wall, saunas, and fitness gym.
The botanical gardens are a delight any time of year. Herons Return guests have a special family pass. Ask our manager.
Day trips up to Garden Bay, Madierra Park, Ruby Lake and Egmont are all well worth exploring - Be sure to take the roads into these communities. It is amazing what is just off the highway.
