Fabulous luxury barn conversion on the fringes of Start Bay

The Barn at Cotmore Farm is your home-from-home just a mile from the sea on Devon's glorious south coast. Surrounded by 13 acres of pasture, woodland and orchards, it offers all the comforts of a stylish country dwelling, with the added bonus of farm animals to visit and pet, and all this within 10 minutes' drive of some of the best beaches in the country. Two flexibly configurable bedrooms with heated slate floors, each with its own luxurious bathroom; a huge, open-plan living space with vaulted ceiling and exposed beams, a fully equipped kitchen at one end and comfy leather sofas at the other; and a secluded private sun-trap of a garden with dining facilities and barbecue; all this and more awaits you in The Barn. Located at the heart of the farm, where days unroll to the rhythm of the seasons, you’ll find it impossible not to relax and fall into step: collect your own eggs for breakfast, pick herbs for a lunchtime salad from the cottage garden, help yourselves to apples from the orchard. Finally, after another exhausting day at the beach or on the moors, walking, cycling, or just pottering around, when evening draws in and absolute tranquility descends on the farmyard, broken only by the sounds of the animals putting themselves to bed, snuggle up in front of a woodburning fire with a book from our library.

Heavenly Devon holiday.

Excellent information pack prior to arrival. Home beautiful. Generous welcome goodies - all covid friendly. Peace and tranquillity abounded. Short drive to seaside. Enclosed sweet garden meant happy dogs. Simply perfect.

Ideal location, great accommodation

We arranged a last minute short break for ourselves and our three children to The Barn and were very pleased we did. It's a very well renovated accommodation in an ideal quiet location, within an easy drive of Dartmouth and Salcombe. We received a very warm welcome from the owner and felt relaxed and comfortable throughout our stay. The log burner made for very cosy evenings. The children loved the easy access to the farm and animals, especially collecting the fresh eggs for breakfast. We wish we could have stayed longer, but will return. We would highly recommend this location.

Excellent Stay

We had a lovely week at the Barn at Cotmore Farm with our two children, aged 3 and 1. The Barn is exactly as it looks in the photos and is clean and spacious, with all mod cons and a large fully equipped kitchen. There is a lovely private garden with table, chairs and barbecue which is a nice little sun trap, and the orchard just next door with a big trampoline for jumping on (couldn't get our daughter off of it!). The farm is a great place for children and our daughter really enjoyed visiting the pigs, sheep and horses, collecting the eggs from the chickens and playing with Jack the dog. Piers and Sue were always on hand to help if needed but were not at all intrusive - great hosts. The roads around the farm are quite narrow but we got used to them fairly quickly. The farm is a great base for exploring - we had never been to Devon before but had great trips out to Salcombe, Dartmouth, Blackpool Sands and Totnes. We also visited Woodlands Leisure Park and Pennywell Farm which were both lots of fun. Kingsbridge itself is a nice place with plenty of little shops and nice restaurants (we loved the Crabshell Inn, and the Tradesmans Arms in the nearby village) and proximity to some really nice beaches. There is lots to do and see in the area - I'm sure that we will be back and would definitely stay at the Barn again. Highly recommended.

Wish we could have stayed longer!

We stayed at The Barn for three nights to attend a family wedding and loved our stay. We just wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy this stunning area and make the most of such a beautiful cottage. The Barn was really well equipped and comfortable, with a pretty outside seating area/garden. Just the right balance of modern, with bags of character. The welcome pack was a lovely touch, thank you. I’d also recommend buying some sausages and bacon from the farmhouse - they’re delicious! Thank you for a warm welcome and a lovely stay.

Cannot recommend highly enough!

Beautiful property, so well provisioned , we could not have asked for anything more. The comms from Piers before the stay was excellent and he made the rebooking of the stay (due to the original date being during lockdown) a breeze. The CV19 hygiene precautions taken were high quality and provided us with real reassurance. Thank you, Piers and family, for making our long awaited family break so memorable.

Brilliant stay

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Barn. Perfect location to visit Salcombe, Dartmouth, Start Point and Beesands. Lovely farm location alive with pigs, sheep, horses, ducks, chickens and of course Jack the poodle! Perfect for families or couples and very peaceful. Accommodation was immaculate with a wonderful welcome hamper - thank you. The ‘own brand’ bacon & jam were amazing, as were the fresh eggs each day. Piers was away on hols but we were made to feel very welcome by Sue and sincerely look forward to visiting this gem of a place again very soon. All 3 properties available look fabulous with a great deal of attention to detail. Stayed for 4 nights but so wish we’d stayed longer.

Great stay at this lovely barn

We stayed at this barn over the Easter weekend. The cottage is lovely - it has everything you would need and also has its own little garden. The kitchen has all the kit and Piers left us a lovely hamper with some goodies. There are books in the cottage as well, for a bit of relaxed reading. The location is very peaceful, surrounded by the Coltmore farm. Right outside our barn, there is a huge trampoline and me and my son had lots of fun jumping around on that! There is a pub within an approx. 20 min walk. Its easy to get to some great beaches and pubs within a 10-15 mins drive. In all, its a great property in an idyllic settings. The hosts are helpful and lovely. I would most definitely recommend. In fact, we're thinking of going back for a longer period.

Luxury accommodation, beautiful surroundings

We spent three wonderful days at Cotmore Farm. Piers and Sue are absolutely wonderful hosts, so friendly and helpful. Our kids enjoyed feeding the sheep and collecting eggs from the henhouse. Loads of beautiful villages and great beaches nearby. Would have liked to spend more time at Cotmore, but we booked late, and the three nights was all that we could get. Will definitely come back for a longer stay in future. Highly recommended!

Nice cottage in beautifull Devon

Lovely accommodation in a beautiful place

Ideal for two people, modern well equipped kitchen, comfortable bed, good bathroom, wood burning stove and enclosed garden. We have a dog who also was delighted with the place, especially the garden + fields. The bacon + sausages we bought from the hosts were delicious (home reared pigs) and free range eggs from the hens. What's not to like?

Sehr schönes Cottage

Wir hatten zwei wunderschöne Wochen im Cottage The Barn. Das Cottage ist liebevoll eingerichtet und sehr gemütlich. Piers und Sue waren immer sehr freundlich. Piers hat uns die Farm gezeigt und uns Tipps für Ausflüge gegeben. Er spricht sehr gut Deutsch! Vielen Dank nochmals an Piers und Sue für das tolle Willkommenspaket. Die Umgebung ist wirklich toll und man kann viel unternehmen. Wir können das Cottage nur weiterempfehlen und werden sicherlich auch wiederkommen. Vielen Dank Piers und Sue.

Beautiful location and delightful barn

We stayed at The Barn with our son and daughter in law and lovely baby grandson for a marvellous week in September. We enjoyed a fantastic welcome pack provided by the owners Piers and Sue. What lovely hosts, allowing us the freedom to look around their farm, collecting eggs and meeting the horses and pigs. The Barn is in a great location for exploring the local beaches and towns. We went on some amazing coastal path walks and we would certainly like to return again.

Relaxing stay in beautiful location

We had a very enjoyable stay at Cotmore Farm Barn with our American friends in late September. The farm is in a peaceful location in the middle of beautiful countryside, not far from Beesands on the coast. We visited local beauty spots, Dartmouth, the Dart river, Totnes and Burgh Island. Food in the local pubs was excellent. The Barn awss extremely well equipped with everything we needed. Piers and Sue were very welcoming and helpful.

Amazing holiday barn with stunning scenery!

We had a wonderful week at The Barn in August 2014. As we stepped out of the car, we were all taken aback by the stunning scenery that surrounds the farm - it really does take your breath away! The Barn itself makes for a perfect stay,everything you could want for is provided, (even free Wi-fi which was a necessity for our teenage daughter!) Piers and Sue are the perfect hosts and should congratulate themselves on making this a perfect home from home. The welcome hamper on arrival is amazing as are the bacon and sausages from the home bred pigs on the farm! If you can tear youself away from the farm, there are amazing walks on the doorstep but if you want to venture a little further there are great beaches a short drive away. We visited most of the places already mentioned in previous reviews. There is so much to do in the area - you definitely won't be bored. We definitely intend on returning having thoroughly enjoyed a very relaxing week here.

Beautiful home-from-home for a relaxing holiday

The Barn is a stunning, extremely well equipped holiday hideaway set in peaceful countryside. We were able to take our dog away with us and this was a great base to explore the beautiful countryside that surrounds the farm. The welcome pack of locally produced food was a great touch that meant we had an amazing breakfast on the first morning. The owners were extremely welcoming and were keen to listen to any improvements we thought they could make. The only (small) downside was the wifi reception was a bit limited within the barn but after speaking to them this is something they now know how to improve so hopefully for all future visitors this should be fine. I look forward to a return visit!

Imagine arriving after a long drive in torrential rain to a warm cosy glowing fire-bliss-thats what Piers had organised for us on day one-and that set the standard of care given for the rest of our long weekend. country paradise

This was our first journey to Devon and, despite the terrible weather, my wife and I had a fantastic experience staying in the Barn at Cotmore Farm. Within minutes we felt perfectly at home - large, cosy, rustic but with enough modern amenities (including a great bathtub!) that kept us comfortable. The fireplace was a bonus and much used. Staying within the farm itself was great - surrounded by horses, pigs and of course the chickens which supplied us with amazing fresh eggs every morning. The location is perfect for exploring the many riches of South Devon - picturesque coastal villages are abundant and close by - with many many great beaches, restaurants and pubs to chose from. Lastly, Piers and Sue were wonderful hosts - extremely knowledgeable about the area, warm, inviting and helpful. We are already missing our wonderful week, but we'll definitely be back, so this softens the blow...

Idyllic, we could have stayed forever.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Barn in May 2013 a week before the school holidays, enjoyed everything about the place and would have no hesitation in recommending it to any of our friends. The accommodation: it’s impossible to think of anything that was not provided in the property. The kitchen is very well equipped for those that like cooking, it’s not a token kitchen like some holiday lets and has every utensil, pot and pan you could imagine. The upstairs is one big room and has plenty of space to eat and relax, and a selection of DVDs for the rainy days. Neither of the bedrooms are massive, but this is a cottage after all, the twin room is probably best suited for children (or smaller people) as I’m pretty tall and didn’t quite fit in one bed. The double has a good size ensuite and there is another separate bathroom on the lower floor. There is also a very useful utility room, we didn’t do any washing, but the space was great for storing cases, shoes, coats etc. Outside: the Barn is built on a hill, with the farm on the lower side and access to the property from the upper level (there is a door downstairs on to the Farm) which makes the property feel more private as you don’t need to go through the farm to get in. Outside is a patio area with BBQ, (which is a bit of a sun trap) and surrounded by a small gated area of grass, which was great for keeping the smaller ones in. Beyond the fence is a big field which the kids can run around in, and has a massive trampoline, which my daughter was never off. She was also very excited every morning to go and collect eggs from the chickens, she didn’t like the pigs as much because they were smelly, she’s only 3. Location: You will need some transport if you stay here, it’s a great base to visit the whole of south Devon, but everywhere is a slow drive due to the narrow roads. The resorts of Paignton and Torquay took more than 45 mins, Salcombe and Dartmouth were about 30mins, but there a plenty beaches much closer (times based on low season). Stokenham is about a mile or so from the Barn, it’s walkable (but the roads are very narrow and dark) and has two pubs, the Tradesman’s Arms is a very nice restaurant, the food was excellent, but it’s not really a pub. The Church House is more of a family friendly pub, but again the food was very good, both made us feel very welcome. Finally a big thank you to Piers for making us feel very welcome on the Farm, try the sausage and bacon from the Farm, yum yum!!

Welcoming hosts and excellent accommodation

We stayed for a week in May with our toddler, who absolutely loved roaming the farm and seeing the horses, pigs and chickens. Our hosts were really accommodating and the welcoming basket was gratefully received! The location of the farm is excellent, we enjoyed trips to various beaches, the South Devon Railway and Paignton Zoo. I would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone wanting a peaceful location, but with amenities not too far away!

Cotmore is a 17th century house surrounded by 13 acres of land that was already a farm more than a thousand years ago. It is a welcoming place that is home to Piers, Sue, various visiting student offspring, some cats, and a small, friendly, bouncy dog called Jack. We moved here from south-east England in 2011, with the aim of establishing an ecologically sustainable holiday experience such as we remember from our own childhoods in Ireland and Cornwall respectively. We have painstakingly converted stone barns and outbuildings to deliver stylish and luxurious self-catering accommodation at the heart of the farm. As well as horses, we keep Large Black pigs, Shetland sheep, and free-range chickens and ducks, all of which provide a plentiful supply of eggs, sausages, bacon and hams that we are happy to share with holiday guests. And, living just a mile from the spectacular south Devon coast, we take full advantage of our fabulous seaside location to walk, swim, cycle, surf and kayak.
