About the property

Located just 2.5 miles north of Los Barriles, our casa and tropical gardens must be seen to be believed! Nearly 100 palm trees dot the landscape encircling the many gardens on the property. Sitting in the living room, you can see the beautiful Sea of Cortez and your very own beach. Of course, there’s always the large pool and Jacuzzi spa available if you choose to stay “at home.”

Feel free to meander through our property on the many different walkways. Beautiful granite boulders are strategically placed so you can just talk or look at the sea. The gardens are as varied as you can imagine. If you're fortunate to be here in the spring, you'll smell the fragrance of the many plumeria trees we have. We have a fire pit just inside the front wall--and it's used often. The bougainvillea labyrinth is beautiful and a most peaceful place to walk. Or, you can just sit under the small palapa near the master bedroom and look at the Sea of Cortez.

And there are toys—kayaks, standup paddleboards, snorkel gear and beach umbrellas should you decide to spend some time by the Sea. Additionally, we have a couple mountain bikes that are no strangers to the beautiful trails in the area.

So much of our Casa living revolves around the outside, we often forget to talk about the rest of the house. There are three bedrooms, each with its own shower and full vanity. Two of the rooms each have a king-size bed, the other has two queens. So sleeping 8 is pretty simple. Our Master Bedroom has satellite tv; the others are equipped with DVD players and flat screen tvs.

Also, in addition to satellite, Netflix and Blu-Ray, our Media Room has three full size twin-beds handling sleeping accommodations for another 3. By the way, this room gives a whole new meaning to the term 'TV Room.' The screen is a 10-foot gem with an HD-resolution projection of DISH satellite programming, Blu-Ray discs or movies via a Mac-Mini. Full description is provided for its operation. (We're senior citizens so the language is simple and the operation's a cinch!) This room has couches in addition to the twin beds, and a table that can be used to serve meals to all.

Then, there’s the Chapel for those who want to get away for a few minutes, to meditate or to have a massage. In fact, we have our own massage table so that Nancy (our local message therapist) can come out for relaxing massages. Our casa has been designed to satisfy the body and soothe the soul, so you don't have to do anything in the Chapel but sit. Many of our guests use the Chapel for meditation or for private Yoga practice.

The Mosaic Patio between the bedroom quarters and the kitchen/TV/living areas is pretty incredible! Covered with rustic Palo de Arco, this room has a beautiful brick fireplace that will allow you to entertain many of your friends and family with potlucks and BBQ’s. Our BBQ grill is on the pool deck by the large bougainvillea along with necessary charcoal and tools.

Across the Mosaic Patio is the Kitchen and next to it is the stairway to the roof. This will provide you with a complete panorama view of the mountains and Sea. You can begin the day with a view of the sunrise and end it with a sunset over the mountains.

The kitchen is well-appointed to serve snacks or gourmet meals. The juicer, food processor and blender are plugged in and ready to go. We have two refrigerators for you to store supplies for your crew.

The kitchen also has a 32' flat screen mounted on the wall, enabling it to be rotated or tilted so that all sitting in the living room, or the kitchen can see it. There's also an APPLE-TV in the kitchen as there is in the Master Bedroom.

The office is adjacent to the kitchen and houses modem, wifi extender and a variety of electronic gear. In addition, our printer-copier is located there and is for your use. Extra cartridges are on the supply shelf against the west wall. If you prefer, you can plug your computer into one of the Ethernet cables in every room. Additionally, we have a VONAGE telephone system allowing you to call anyplace in the US or Canada free of charge. Likewise, you can receive calls from anyone in the States or Canada.

The office also has a bathroom and shower that we often use as a changing room for the pool. There's a bodega behind the office with beach towels, wine, and food supplies. Feel free to use all the towels, drink the wine and eat any of the food you find there.

We've been in the area for over 20 years and can give you first-hand advice on where to get a boat for fishing, ATVs for exploring and even a chef who can provide you with a complete Mexican meal should you so desire. We've got favorite beaches, bike trails, taquerias, even fancier restaurants in the area. For snorkeling, all you need to do is open the front gate and walk to the water. We've got some of the best snorkeling in the Sea.

About Edward M. Bodaken

We're residents of Los Barriles AND South Pasadena, CA--dividing our time about 65-35 favoring Baja. We've been retired about 14 years and enjoy our time down here--especially when any of our kids and grandkids visit us.

Edward M. Bodaken purchased this house in 1998

Why Edward M. Bodaken chose La Paz

We lived in Buena Vista for nearly 10 years when we decided that this is the area we'd like to retire to so we began looking for a home that had space and potential. This property 'fit the bill to a T.' A few years after buying, we put in the pool, then the walkways, gradually planted gardens and some grass...and the rest is history.

What makes this house unique

We loved this property because the house was built on the BACK of the lot and the yard had so much growing room. We've never been disappointed. To sit in the outdoor living area and look at the Sea of Cortez is something that we never tire of or take for granted.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Your home is open, peaceful, and spiritual. The ocean and animals bring a comforting calm to the soul. I hope we left it a little better than we found it.

Magical and unique vacation home!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had the extreme pleasure of visiting Ed and Jennifer's amazing home for a second year in a row! The house and entire property is unlike anything else we've ever experienced. It truly is a hidden gem. We were traveling with another family, four kids ages 3-7, and it is the perfect family vacation spot. From the minute you wake up (which should be in time for the glorious sunrises), you are enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. I adore the open kitchen and the many nooks and crannies of the property where one can curl up on a hammock, lay by the pool or create rock sculptures in the sand garden. The pool and hot tub provided hours of fun, with easy and walkable beach access, plus all the ocean toys you need. At night we enjoyed home cooked meals from local chefs (all arranged by Ed) which was such a blessing and so delicious. Ed also helped coordinate massages for all the worth it! And it would be an understatement to say that the kids LOVED watching movies and sleeping in the enormous theater room. We also love the small town. There isn't much, but it's all you need to appreciate the small town beauty of Los Barriles.

But the best part of it all, is how gracious, accommodating and responsive Ed and Jennifer are. From the minute I booked the house to the minute we checked out, Ed made every effort to ensure our stay was the best it could be. Jennifer's artistic touches everywhere make you smile and inspired the kids to be creative. I can only hope to return again very, very soon.

Second time back to Casa Sol Espiral

  • 5 of 5

We went back to this wonderful house a second time with our three young boys ages 5, 3, and 1 this past July. We had another excellent time and would love to return! Our three year old learned to swim in the pool this last time and by the end of the trip we had him snorkeling out by the jetty out in the sea behind the house. I went out fishing with one of Ed's recommended captains and caught a marlin on one of the days. The beach and sea out back provided tons of amusement for the kids and when it got too hot they could relax in the nice cool movie room and watch some cartoons on the projector.

We have been down to this stretch of coast five times and really love it. The casa is great in part because you are just a short drive into Los Barrilles to get supplies and eat out and still far enough away that the beach gets very few visitors. We have been here both in the summer and the winter. In the summer it obviously gets very hot in this area, but luckily with the number of palm trees they have on the property there is plenty of shade, and of course you have the pool to cool off in. In the winter it can get quite breezy and the area is known as a wind water sports paradise. We took a nice trip about an hour away to a beautiful waterfall near Santiago on one of the windy days. There are plenty of amusements at the Casa though if you just want to hang out and relax.

If you are looking for a quiet beach holiday in a wonderful family home that has a lovely pool and spa and a terrific garden this is an ideal spot. Our boys still keep asking us when we are going to go back! Ed is an amazing host and really goes the extra mile to make you feel at home. Thanks for a super trip!

Beauty and joy!

  • 5 of 5

Where to start? We were 6 people celebrating my 70th birthday: my husband, sons, daughter in law and our grandson. The most beautiful vacation facilitated in large part by Ed’s generosity, kindness, attentiveness and big heart. From the beginning to the end, he checked in with us and then went the extra mile at each point to make everything work in a convenient way. He set things up so that everything flowed seamlessly. He is a masterful host.

The place is situated on gorgeous grounds. Palapas and palm trees dot the landscape. The colorful, artistic outdoor kitchen was well equipped and allowed us to work together while holding the pool, the yard and the ocean in view. Some could play or visit in the dining and living room areas. All of of these living areas are nestled under the fan- cooled palapa. But there are also all the tech advantages: wifi throughout, TVs, even in the kitchen where we screened our home made movie inspired by our fun in the pool. There is a screening room with a screen the size of one wall and hundreds of titles to select including a wide assortment for children. There is also a huge basket of hand puppets. Two rows of seating ensure a good seat for each person. My favorite place to sit were on the mattresses perched on platforms with pillows and blankets to cozy up for movie time. We made popcorn. Heaven! There were perfectly selected toys for our grandson, fun stuff for the pool -- noodles, paddles, balls and such, and paddle boards, small boats, kayaks, snorkeling equipment for the ocean. On the beach itself is a beautiful labyrinth and a village sculpture made from material found on the beach. My grandson and I contributed our part to the sculpture by working in new elements at the portals. Very fun. Norma cooked for us two nights. Delicious! And she was warm and charming. We fished, caught lots of trigger fish and made a ton of ceviche as well as fish curry.

There is a lush spirit of generosity and beauty that infuses the entire grounds. The place itself brought us tremendous joy! Many, many thanks Ed and Jennifer for an unforgettable trip of a lifetime!

Stunning Property

  • 5 of 5

Trying to put into words, what already has been said, especially after reading all of the other five star reviews for Ed and Jen's slice of heaven will be difficult but I'm up for the task. We've been lucky enough to have done some pretty spectacular traveling over our lives but Baja does something to us that no where else has been able to do, this our second time and it won't be our last ! The colors of the Sea of Cortez with a backdrop of cactus, mountains and desert and then add in that laid back vibe that you can feel as you cruise up RT 1 away from San Jose del Cabo, for me, it's a comfortable, like home feel but with an atmosphere of stark beauty. Driving through little towns along the way, forgetting about the speed bumps ! , passing cattle, goats and donkeys, seemingly free to roam then to finally arrive in Los Barriles with all it's friendly local color and bustle. Stopping at Chapito's for provisions and the all important cerveza, then onward to " why you have come here in the first place " !! Casa Del Sol Espiral !! Honestly, your own private five star resort ! ,perfectly designed, built and furnished. Outstanding outdoor living spaces with a chef friendly kitchen and killer VitaMix all overlooking the stunning pool and spa with the ocean beyond. Pool toys, snorkel gear, kayaks, paddle boards, games, theater room with more movies than Amazon !! enough stuff to keep you busy and tire you out so you can take full advantage of their comfy beds !! Rosa will meet you on arrival and give you the tour, Norma will prepare authentic Mexican meals with notice if asked, Carlos the fish guy comes by on Tuesday's ( outstanding !! ) and Tito from Tito's Pangas is only a phone call away for an incredible day of fishing ! Snorkeling, swimming or casting a lure or fly out front, walking miles and miles of empty beach north or south, a fire on the beach at night looking up at more stars than you've ever seen in your life are just a few of your daily options. Loads of exploration all around, drive the dirt road north to Punta Pescadero to some stunning beaches and snorkeling, west to Todos Santos and the Pacific, South to Cabo Pulmo and Santiago or just never leave pool side ! Major kudos and many thanks to the hosts of all of this ! from my initial inquiry to Ed, he always made himself available to answer any questions that I might have and he was right there via text, email or phone from start to finish. Muchas, muchas gracias - The McKennas

Beautiful and most memorable vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Hands down this was the best vacation I have ever experienced with our family. We had four generations in our group and we all had an amazing time. I absolutely loved the outdoor living style of the property. Nothing beats having a view of the pool, water, beach while cooking or washing dishes! Ever since we have returned home I have been dreaming about how to create an outdoor living space in our own yard that will be half as wonderful as Casa Del Sol Espiral. Everyone we met during our stay were so welcoming, friendly and helpful. We enjoyed trying out the paddle boards, kayaks and snorkeling gear, we really didn't need to leave, the marine life was incredible, like looking into an aquarium. This was like our own private resort. My son (4 years old) keeps asking when we can go back.
