About The Owner

Growing up within a quarter mile of both Kinder Hawk Schoolhouse and our current farm, Jim, has intimate knowledge of the Albany township/Kempton area. Our main business is Robertson's Renovations General Contracting. We specialize in renovating older homes. Kinder Hawk will eventually become our retirement home - but we are still too busy with other things, like volunteering for the US Fish & Wildlife banding birds of prey, or volunteering for Albany Township Historical Society, gardening and grandchildren! We would love to invite you to experience true old fashioned PA German farm hospitality and welcome you into the family!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2014

Why The Owner chose Albany

Kinder Hawk Schoolhouse used to be a part of our 40 acre farm. After many years of educated local children then being converted into a private residence, we were fortunate to be able to purchase the schoolhouse in December of 2014 and add it back into our farm!

What makes this cottage unique

Private, unique, economical, quiet and very cozy and comfortable with outstanding views!

Spectacular setting!

This was an amazing place to stay. Historic school house nestled in the rolling hills at the base of the beautiful Kittatiny Ridge but with all of the modern amenities you might want (kitchen, tv, wireless, etc.). Great access to Hawk Mountain and I would highly recommend the scenic train ride to Jim Thorpe. The goodie basket upon arrival just put this over the top and the jam is to die for. Owners were extremely friendly but very respectful of our privacy. We had a wonderful time and will definitely be going back!!

Stay Here

Wow. What a retreat from the hustle and bustle. This is a fabulous property - tastefully renovated and serene. Cheryl and Jim responded quickly and professionally to our last-minute request. They also welcomed us with open arms (literally!) and, with a top-notch goodie basket, including fresh home-baked bread, fresh eggs, delicious cheese, jam and more. Great access to Hawk Mountain. Restaurants require a drive, but it's worth it.

A special place!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved Kinder Hawk. Cheryl is a gracious host and greeted us with a wonderful welcome basket of goodies! The renovated schoolhouse is charming and stocked with everything imaginable. Views from the yard/patio are beautiful--such a peaceful place. The owners obviously love sharing this home, as they've put so much attention to detail in this rental. We were only in the area for two nights, but enjoyed hiking at Hawk Mountain and visiting Pinnacle Ridge and Folino Estates wineries. We highly recommend a stay at Kinder Hawk!

Your place to relax and catch your breath

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was too short, and too hectic. In the area for a wedding, this was a perfect place to relax and catch our breath. We were able to host a dinner for some other relatives also in for the wedding, and everyone was jealous of our home away from home. As I said, we weren't there as long as we'd like, so would love to return and just enjoy the home. Most places one stays in are just that: a place to stay in for a few days and leave as soon as possible. Kinder Hawk made us want to extend our stay for much longer, we were in no hurry to go home. Cheryl is incredible, and we enjoyed her wonderful Italian feast and welcome basket. So needed after flying and driving all day!

Thank you so much. Hope to be able to return.

Perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

I was very happy with my stay at the Kinder Hawk schoolhouse! The location makes you feel like you've truly "gotten away from it all," and provides ample opportunity for quiet solace as well as active hiking. The house has been beautifully renovated and comes with anything that anyone would need. Cheryl is effusively pleasant and is very informative. The welcome basket was much appreciated. The house is immaculate. The property is expansive and quiet. I watched some deer and a groundhog from the privacy of the living room (binoculars are provided). Short drive to Cabela's, Crystal Cave, etc. Top notch!! :-)

Picturesque Get Away Cottage in a Quiet Mountain Valley

  • 5 of 5

Kinderhawk Schoolhouse is an amazing place and I love it so much I want to keep it well hidden so it's available when I want to come back, but that wouldn't be fair to all the other people who should also have a chance to be transformed by soaking in its tranquil beauty. The historic building is along a quiet road with fields and hills all around. Just a few miles higher up into the mountains is Hawk Mountain Sanctuary with fantastic hiking trails and incredible mountain views. The appalatian trail runs through the area and nearby is Berks County Park and state game lands. If you've come to be outdoors this is a great place to be, even if all you do is sit on the schoolhouse patio all day. Double doors open from the living area onto a large fieldstone patio with table and chairs. This is a stunning place to watch the sunrise across the field, or look up into star studded skies at night. The house is laid out intuitively and furnished comfortably. There are beautiful wood floors with tile in the kitchen and bathroom. The small kitchen is very adequate for preparing food. High ceilings and lots of windows give the place an airy feel. It is so quiet here. The occasional car passing by almost takes you by surprise. This is a place that welcomes you home no matter where you've come from. I don't see how anyone ever leaves once they get here. If you need technology, it is well equipped with wifi and TVs but you may feel the cyber world fade as you begin to hear the whispers of the sky and fields and trees.
