Oriental is all about slowing down and relaxing….and that’s what we hope you do at our turn-of-the-century home. Its been a place where our family has made memories for over 40 years! Everyone who visits gets a sense that this home has been well loved and lived in….its NOT fancy but its comfortable and inviting. Whatever you do, DON’T RUSH…it's a small town built for long ambles a bike ride or a little tennis….and of course Sailing. Oriental is the ”Sailing Capital of North Carolina”. The Neuse River is within site of our front porch.
Our parents moved to Oriental in 1974 and created a home for all four of us kids as well as 10 grandchildren and now 7 great grandchildren (and growing we hope!) We spent every free moment there but particularly loved the Fourth of July Croaker Festival...Thanksgiving and Christmas. This home has lots and lots of memories and we'd love for you to build some there too!
Mary Sharpe purchased this house in 1974
One front screened porch (with rockers and swings) where you can sit and read or talk….our family loves early mornings and evenings crowded there telling stories and reminiscing. You can see the River Neuse from that porch and get a good sense of what kind of wind is available for a sail… depending on the time of year, you might catch a whiff of the gardenias or other flowers in the garden depending on the time of year.
One back deck built around a Live Oak Tree where you can have a bite to eat.
Three bedrooms and two full baths….a king room….a queen bedroom and a bunk and twins room all sleeping 8 comfortably
One large dining that has been the scene of lots of Thanksgivings and family dinners of fried chicken….shrimp and oysters from the River and most importantly, LOTS of LIVELY conversation about everything you an imagine including religion AND politics…child-rearing and a little gossip about whoever is not there at the time….
One large Florida Room (thats a fancy name for the side family room) where we continue conversations after dinner and play games or watch a movie. We survived 39 years without much of a TV but agreed to add a big 54” flat screen last year for the enjoyment of our guests. Now we argue about whether its ”on” or ”off”! Enjoy some family time playing and talking and turn the TV on only if you run out of things to talk about! We also have internet if you really need to plug in to the world but try life in Oriental without it! You will love it!
One large kitchen which has produced some incredible meals and some other memorable times dying Easter Eggs and all of the things that families do in kitchens….again…think conversation and food!
One small breakfast room which holds the ”kids table” at Thanksgiving and other family dinners. Its small but we manage to get a lot of people around the table for breakfast or lunch shifts.
One living room which can be the quiet get-away place for those who need a little alone time for a nap or
My husband and I stayed in Oriental in mid-October of this year at this charming home. From the moment we entered the door, we felt right at home. In fact, the home exudes the same friendliness that the town offers its guests. The home is in walking distance to the river and to a few fun restaurants. We attended the Front Porch Music Festival which was a wonderfully fun time.
The owners of this charming home are lovely people and easy to work with. The home is clean and comfortable and provides all the necessary items as well as plenty of room for an extended family. I am planning on returning with my daughter and granddaughter in the summer of 2017. Highly recommend this rental property!
I could not have imagined how wonderful this home is by the pictures. We were staying here for our daughter's wedding and this home provided the perfect place for many to gather and celebrate. Absolutely everything we could need was there. Great king sized bed which was very comfortable, large kitchen to prepare lunch for a crowd, lots of rooms to gather and spend time w/ family and friends. The screened front porch w/ rockers, lounge chair and swing was where we all seemed to gather. I really didn't want to leave. The family photos, antique furniture and vintage glassware in the many cabinets throughout the home brought back memories. We wanted for nothing....except more time there. Mary was an excellent owner/hostess who provided all the info we needed early because she knew how hectic things would be...Thank you ! If you're thinking about visiting Oriental...I highly recommend this place.
Only a block from the river and an easy walk to "town", this is now our go-to house for Oriental. It was immaculate on our arrival and the spaces are just as pictured in the VRBO description. The kitchen is better equipped than most full time homes: really impressive in view of the minimalist approach that many rental homes take in that regard. Gathering spaces--parlor, porch, sitting room and dining room, are comfortable and capacious. They invite good conversation. The neighborhood is traditional Oriental, which is pretty, and so quiet. On a summer evening there were far more bikes on the street than cars on the street...in fact there were almost no cars at all. Mary provided very good support.
We enjoyed our stay in Oriental over Mother's Day weekend. The house was clean, convenient and well appointed. Screen front porch invites relaxation!
The photos listed with this property are completely accurate. I felt familiar with the house before even arriving! As you can see from my rating of all stars, I am recommending this property for anyone planning a stay in Oriental, NC
The owner, Mary, was so easy to work with and she was able to respond to any of my questions in less than 24 hours, and usually far less time than that!
The beds were comfortable. The bathrooms were well stocked with essentials. There were two refrigerators, making it easy to store large platters of food. I felt very much at home in this house. My group and I spent quite a bit of time out on the porch~ listening to the symphony of birds each morning! Just delightful!
Because of its location we were able to walk just a couple blocks to the local coffee hut called The Bean. The locals could not be any more friendly! There are a few restaurants also within a very short walk, again making this an ideal location for our group, or anyone for that matter!
We plan on returning to this property next year as we plan another small artists' reunion!
This was a very nice and relaxing place to stay; overall, very accommodating and convenient to the general Oriental area. The house could have used a bit of an airing out and cleaning, however, as all of us staying there felt the dust and whatnot (possibly a bit of mold?) take over our sinuses and cause us allergy issues. Overall, though, great place and really nice people who own it.
Oriental is the Sailing Capital of North Carolina! Its a great place to bike ride...there's a tennis court down the street. There are some really good restaurants. We like Brantleys for breakfast...the Toucan for dinner or try Silos (yes a couple of Silos) where they have live music some nights. We also love Gary's Down East Seafood in nearby Arapaho...look it up on Yelp!
