Overview

About the property

Beachfront Rental With an Open Floorplan and 15ft of Windows Overlooking the Sea

This beachfront house is not large but has a sizeable open floor plan that is perfect for a couple on a romantic island getaway. Situated on a private beach replete with coconut bearing palms and a prevailing eastern trade wind, the Purple Jawfish Beach House has been called the best vacation rental for couples by numerous guests on other vacation rental websites. The house has recently been gut-renovated and is like new. The kitchen area, dining area, sitting/reading area and sleeping area are all well defined by unique counters, a Honduran hardwood custom bookshelf and an armoire. The kitchen features all new stainless steel appliances (no dishwasher though) and a sunken deep sink on a unique penny peninsula countertop. There are 20 feet of 4 foot high windows on the front and sides of the house (15 feet of them look directly out over the beach to the Caribbean sea and the mountains beyond). It is truly amazing to see.

There is a new deck with a swinging loveseat where a couple can watch the tiny waves gently break on the beach (the north side of the island has the bigger waves. The house is located on a rare (for Utila as it is not incredibly sandy on the shores) stretch of white sand beach in the snorkeling hotspot neighborhood of Blue Bayou, which stretches out in front of the Mesoamerican reef. The mountain range Cordillera Nombre de Dios rises up in the distance from the mainland and on most days you have a great view of the mountain peaks out over the Caribbean even though they are over 20 miles away. A quick search of Google map’s satellite will show you why we think Blue Bayou is the absolute best area for snorkeling or shore diving available for vacation renters. The reef in this area is second to none and is right in front of the house. The only thing separating you from the water is about 50 feet of white sand and a few palm trees. A few of them are mature palms which produce coconuts. To the left of the house there are only almond trees, palm trees and sand. To the right, the neighborhood of Blue Bayou stretches out for a few houses (it is not large at all). This is the best neighborhood on Utila for vacation rentals due to its proximity to everything you need on an island vacation. It is very quiet but still close enough to get to restaurants or bars without a Tuk-Tuk (mototaxi). The house is on a dead end road (actually the end of the main road) where people catch boats to the south shore.

The house is perfect for people who want to dive, snorkel, get a tan on the beach or fly-fish. All of these activities are accessible from the private beach in front of the house. It is only a short 10 minute walk to town (a bike is even quicker, you can rent them for less than $5 a day if you get them weekly) but far enough away that you can relax in peace with a cold beer or a Coco-loco (take a coconut, empty the milk, replace with rum) without doing much of anything. This is the Caribbean of Hemingway, before cruise ships and all inclusive resorts, Purple Jawfish beach house is a real life corona commercial and since we cannot be here all year round, you should stay at our place instead.

About James Passantino

I am a 35 year old middle school teacher from upstate NY living in NYC for the past 10 years. I love to travel but never had the opportunity to travel out of the country until l was 23. Since then I have traveled to over 40 countries (all on a pretty tight budget) and fell in love with Central America. So much so that I met my wife in Nicaragua. We actually began dating on Utila after traveling together from her hometown (she had never left either). We both learned to dive on the island and Susy even learned to swim there.

James Passantino purchased this house in 2011

Why James Passantino chose Utila

When I saw this little spot on the beach for sale years later we took a huge risk, emptied all our savings and my retirement account, took two loans out and never looked back. NYC where we live is way too expensive to own so we live in a small rented studio apartment in Brooklyn and chose to put our money into fixing the Purple Jawfish Beach House (purple is her favorite color and the jawfish is my favorite fish, they are not purple) until we can retire there. It may not be the biggest place but it has that "it" factor. We have put our blood, sweat, hearts and souls into this house and hope you can see that when you stay here.

What makes this house unique

This house is located in front of one of the most beautiful Coral Reefs you will ever see. There are also two lagoons on the other side of the sand road that you could kayak in and see mangroves and all the different animals that live there. The reef is full of amazing animals like turtles, eagle rays, squid, ocopus, hundres of species of colorful fish and eels (there are a family of small Chain link Morays in the rock jetty in front of the house). I've even seen dolphins and nurse sharks in the water from the deck and then gone out and snorkled with them. By the way, there are yellow headed jawfish in front of the house about 150 ft out and to the left. They are awesome but shy so you have to hover over them slowly to not scare them into their burrows. .

Tropical paradise!!!

  • 5 of 5

If you are planning a trip to Utila you need to book the Purple Jawfish. It is the best place on the island to stay. The view of the water from the front porch swing is amazing. It looks just like the pictures. The house is clean and comfortable and is within walking distance of The Blue Bayou Beach Bar where we enjoyed great fish and shrimp tacos. Mike is the property manager and he will meet you at the ferry to give you all the information you need about the house and island. He will rent you a scooter as well as check on you daily. My husband and I have travelled a lot during our 34 years of marriage and this trip was at the top of the list.

Perfect location

  • 4 of 5

The house was well appointed with everything you could need from housewares to a hammock. Instructions for everywhere and everyplace you could need or want to go. The house was a short walk into town but far enough from the hustle of the business area of Utila town. Rent a scooter to make getting into and out of town easy and fast (you can, and we did, rent the owner’s scooter).

Mike the property manager met us at the airport and checked on us daily providing us with helpful tips and suggestions throughout the week. One such suggestion was to walk the town area before going there with a scooter so you know what is there and where everything is. The downtown area traffic moves fast and can be difficult to maneuver if you don’t know where you are headed.

James, the owner (and Mike) were available at the drop of a line for any questions or issues that came up. Their response time was almost immediate. James provided a bevy of useful information and suggestions before heading to Utila and it was fun checking them off the list of things we did while there. Couldn’t have asked for better communication with an owner and his on site liaison.

The hummingbirds are magical and friendly (while sitting on the magnificent porch swing) as are the crabs who live on the side of the house (though they would hide after grabbing the pieces of bread I gave them). The snorkeling right out front of the house was both refreshing and fun.

While there is a public beach on the way into town (pretty close to the house) this property has its own. You will not be disappointed.

There are bars and restaurants within walking distance in either direction. And within a short walk you can hop on a boat that takes you to Neptune’s for the day. Neptunes has some pretty incredible beaches, snorkeling and great food.

Gorgeous little beach house!

  • 5 of 5

The Purple Jawfish was stunning! Very well maintained, spotlessly clean, and stocked with everything we could have possibly needed for our stay. James, the owner, was amazing as well. He was always happy to answer our questions leading up to the trip and during our stay. He even helped us put together a trip to Sambo Creek when we were staying in the mainland, which was one of the highlights of our trip! Utila is a fun place to be! The people are amazing. We never once felt unsafe and we slept very well. Snorkeling right off the beach in front of the house is beautiful. Then we took a short walk to Coral View and snorkeled to the drop off, which was a whole different level of amazingness! I highly recommend it! James will rent you his scooter and that is a great and oh so fun way to see the island. Make sure to take a trip to Bando Beach Bar - it will quickly become your favorite too. Great food, amazing staff, perfect place to meet some locals and get even more tips about the island. Thanks so much, James, for letting us stay in your beautiful home! We couldn't have asked for anything more. This place truly has it all.

Beautiful, excellent location and super clean!!

  • 5 of 5

Purple Jawfish Beach house is truly an amazing place to rent In Utila. The location is what makes it so great! While it is out of town it is only a short walk or scooter ride in, you have your own private little beach area(rare) and view from the house is postcard perfect! The house comes completely equipped with anything and everything to make your stay comfortable. The screened windows were awesome to let the beautiful breeze come in and we never had to worry about mosquitoes or sand flies coming in. The house is impeccabley clean and has a very cozy warm feeling to it! We had the greatest pleasure of meeting the owner James’s parents who were staying across the road. We were met at the ferry and put into a tuk - tuk which took us to the house. Then shown around and given directions for restaurants and the grocery store. James’s delightful parents were very quick to respond to any of our needs and were very knowledgeable about the island. They went above and beyond to make us very welcome ! We miss LJ and Vinny already!!

Thank you James for sharing your piece of heaven with us, we were there to just relax and reconnect. Purple Jawfish beach house did not disappoint , it was more than one could have hoped for!!!

We will be back. Moe and Ilona:)

I little slice of heaven

  • 5 of 5

The Purple Jawfish Beach House is a great property. One of the only properties on the Island that will give you your own private beach. We were able to feed eel, rays, crabs and hummingbirds right at the house. And we loved watching the sun rise everyday! James is really great with answering all of your questions concerning not only the house but the Island as well. He is also great with making sure that you are set up to get to the house. Mike is awesome once you get there too. He is very accommodating with everything. He even set up our taxi to the airport the morning we left. He checked in on us every day to make sure we didn't need anything.

The minisplit is great to keep the house cool. We did notice that keeping the windows closed kept it cooler in the house at the time of our stay since there wasn't a huge breeze. The sand flies were pretty rough too since the wind wasn't picking up too often but is was okay.

The snorkeling was great in front of the house. We even saw a ray and a baby nurse shark. I would stay here again!

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely the most amazing place on the island! Solitude but still close enough to get whatever necessities needed. A little loud on the weekends with noise from The Venue, a close bar. Other than that it's a perfect spot. The pictures on-line are really what you get! Beach front 50 feet from the front porch, nice accommodations in the large open beach front bungalow. If it was for sale, we would purpose without question. James the owner responds within the hour, Mike the on site manager is always available and makes sure every detail goes off without a hitch. Awesomeness all the way around!

Utila is a small island but there is a lot to do. Situated on the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world (The MesoAmerican Reef) scuba diving and snorkling are the activities that first come to mind (that and year round whale shark sightings). But there is so much more if you are interested in getting more than just an inexpensive and professional PADI scuba certification. Explore the jungle and the fresh water caves. Test your luck to find the crashed plane that looks right out of an episode of LOST.
