About Paula Hine

We initially opened the River Garden as a Bed and Breakfast 10 years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed striving to exceed the expectations of every guest that stayed. We have made so many friends over the years and gratefully many loyal guests returned to the River Garden again and again, often with friends and family to fully utilize the homes entertaining space. Some recent changes in our family situation require us to limit the Bed and Breakfast availability but we still want to offer access to the home through rental opportunities.

We both have 10 years of Walt Disney World Resort experience and we try to bring our knowledge of guest satisfaction and attention to detail to our own guests' experience at the River Garden.

Paula Hine purchased this house in 2007

Why Paula Hine chose Blue Ridge Highlands

We fell in love with the home and area when Scott was offered a position in a local company 10 years ago. Purchased the home from a couple leaving the B&B after running it for 16 years. We made significant improvements and additions to the property to enhance our guests' satisfaction. The location is perfect as it is close enough to town to enjoy all Abingdon has to offer but just far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet and beauty of the country.

What makes this house unique

The River Garden is perfect for your family escapes (or escapes from the family) reunions with friends and families, and celebrations of all kinds. The home is great for visiting and has plenty of space to do so. But it also has four bedrooms available each with its own private bathroom and each opens out onto a deck overlooking the river. The theater room is the man cave guys dream about. Play some old family movies, the latest movie from redbox, or shoot some pool on the billiards table while you watch the big game. Off the theater is a piano/reading room with panoramic view of the river and countryside. The kitchen is great for preparing meals together with plenty of counter space and double oven. The upper deck over the river has a raised dining table and glass panels in the deck rails to truly enjoy the river view below.

The den with its stone wall wood-burning fireplace is perfect for playing one of our many board games or working on a puzzle, or just cuddling.

We even have an exercise room for those that have to burn those extra calories that vacations usually include.

We also have water tubes, a two person canoe and two person kayak at our guests disposal to truly take advantage of the river out your back door. Bring a Pick-Up Truck for transporting them and we will direct you of spots to put in and take out for a great time on the river. You will also will have miles of mountain trails at your disposal for the advanced hiker, but you only need to take a short walk across the road on our farm to get a beautiful mountain view or relax at our secluded spring fed koi pond. Visit in August and pick ample wild blackberries before the deer get them all.

Wonderful Get-Away destination

  • 5 of 5

We are repeat visitors to River Garden which is located about 10-12 minutes from Abingdon, VA, equidistant between Roanoke, VA, Asheville, NC and Knoxville, TN. The setting is rural and relaxing on a bluff overlooking the Holston River. There are 4 BR's all of which open on to decks overlooking the river. For bird enthusiasts, we saw many pairs of common mergansers flying up and down the river and heard a symphony of birdsong every morning. The location is "ready" for kyacking or tubing on the river, biking or walking on the mostly level North Fork River Road, or just relaxing on the two level deck system. There is also a hot tub which is great after dark for star gazing and a very wide screen (dare i say "jumbo-tron..?) TV which was a hit for March Madness devotees. The BR's are very comfortable, each with its own private bath and equipped with all necessities. The kitchen is also well equipped and the hostess provides all manner of seasonings and condiments including the occasional freshly baked cookies. The hostess is close by but very unobtrusive. I would recommend River Garden for families, family reunions, girl-getaways, private retreats or accommodations for antique-ing in the area or attending the plays at the Barter Theatre in Abingdon.

Great place to reconnect with family.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the River Garden. We were looking for a place about half way between our home and Washington, DC to spend some time with family members who are usually stationed overseas. The home was spacious and comfortable with lots to do inside on a rainy weekend. Paula was a gracious host who made every effort to help our stay be an enjoyable one. The surroundings were picturesque. I would recommend the place to anyone looking to get away from the bustle for a time. Great place.

Wonderful last minute weekend away

  • 5 of 5

We planned our stay here very last minute when other plans fell through. The owner was wonderful in making sure we had what we needed. We spent the day Saturday in Abington visiting the farmer's market and wandering the pristine downtown during their Busker Festival. The afternoon was spent back at the house with a combination of playing in the river and watching football on the giant screen TV. It was a perfect way to spend a holiday weekend.

Beautiful Place, Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at River Garden B&B with my husband and two kids (ages 9 and 11) for four days over Memorial Day Weekend. We rented the whole house because the owners were out of town for the weekend. I can't say enough good things about it. First, the setting and location are absolutely gorgeous, overlooking a picturesque river with views from every part of the house. Even the drive to/from is beautiful and relaxing. The house itself is wonderful -- spacious, spotless, charming, updated, with extra "touches" everywhere. For those who rent individual rooms, each room has a private entrance, private bathroom, and its own access to a deck onto the river. The house is equipped with everything, from kayaks and water tubes, to board games and pool table. We did not expect breakfast since we knew the owners were out of town, yet they left a complete home-cooked breakfast for us (quiche, muffins, fresh fruit, etc.) that we ate happily during our stay. We are already planning our return trip in the Fall
