About Paula Hine
We initially opened the River Garden as a Bed and Breakfast in 2007 and have thoroughly enjoyed striving to exceed the expectations of every guest that stayed. We have made so many friends over the years and gratefully many loyal guests returned to the River Garden again and again, often with friends and family to fully utilize the homes entertaining space. Some recent changes in our family situation require us to no longer run the Bed and Breakfast but instead offer access to the home through rental opportunities. We both have 10 years of Walt Disney World Resort experience and we try to bring our knowledge of guest satisfaction and attention to detail to our own guests' experience at the River Garden.
Paula Hine purchased this House in 2007
Why Paula Hine chose Washington County
We fell in love with the home and area when Scott was offered a position in a local company 10 years ago. Purchased the home from a couple leaving the B&B after running it for 16 years. We made significant improvements and additions to the property to enhance our guests' satisfaction. The location is perfect as it is close enough to town to enjoy all Abingdon has to offer but just far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet and beauty of the country.
What makes this House unique
The River Garden is perfect for your family escapes (or escapes from the family) reunions with friends and families, and celebrations of all kinds. The home is great for visiting and has plenty of space to do so. But it also has four bedrooms available each with its own private bathroom and each opens out onto a deck overlooking the river. The theater room is the man cave guys dream about. Play some old family movies, the latest movie from redbox, or shoot some pool on the billiards table while you watch the big game. Off the theater is a piano/reading room with panoramic view of the river and countryside and a futon couch for an additional sleeping arrangement. The kitchen is great for preparing meals together with plenty of counter space and double oven. The upper deck over the river has a raised dining table and glass panels in the deck rails to truly enjoy the river view below. The den with its stone wall wood-burning fireplace is perfect for playing one of our many board games or working on a puzzle, or just cuddling. We even have an exercise room for those that have to burn those extra calories that vacations usually include. We also have water tubes, a two person canoe and two person kayak at our guests disposal to truly take advantage of the river out your back door. Bring a Pick-Up Truck for transporting them and we will direct you of spots to put in and take out for a great time on the river. You will also will have miles of mountain trails at your disposal for the advanced hiker, but you only need to take a short walk across the road on our farm to get a beautiful mountain view or relax at our secluded spring fed koi pond. Visit in August and pick ample wild blackberries before the deer get them all.

There were 4 couples of us so the house was perfect for us. Would love to go back when the weather is warmer as it has 2 large decks overlooking the river with several rocking chairs. A short drive to town which offers lots of restaurants and of course The Barter.
Great place to stay
Nice home with several rooms—perfect for several couples or for a family get together. Our host had everything ready and up to date. The house is fully equipped and there is a lot to do in the area.
Wonderful place with all you need. Abingdon has a lot to offer, but the house would be just the perfect place for a restful getaway.
Nicely furnished, comfortable accommodations, wonderful experence
River Garden, yes on the river but a bit of a stretch on the Garden.
Needs abit of attention, but was a good size for 8 people. The theater room was a big hit. The air condition did not seem to work all that good. Place should had been swept on the decks and cleared of all the cobwebs before we arrived. The vanity in the trailblazer room wasn't even sealed to the wall. The toilet in the bathroom beside the kitchen rocked when you sat on it. Over all it worked for 4 couples.
Thank you Kathy C for bringing these details to our attention. We will be sure to have the housekeeper keep an eye out for cobwebs on the decks and try to keep them swept, although the fall is a difficult time to ensure they stay constantly clear. One of the water gardens is being dismantled and replaced as it became structurally compromised. The loose toilet will be repaired immediately and the air conditioning evaluated. We do wish however that you made us aware of these things during your stay so we could have addressed them in a more timely manner to ensure a more comfortable stay for you. But as they say, better late than never. We try to do our best to make our guests happy. Thanks again for giving the River Garden a try.
Wonderful place right on the river with wonderful owners!
Loved, loved, loved our stay at River Garden. We will be back! The owner, Paula, and her family, who live in an attached apartment (they will totally leave you alone but we liked them so much we didn't want them to), are extremely accommodating and helpful! The house was spacious, clean and the beds were extremely comfortable. The kitchen was fantastic. The theater room, with it's big projection screen, pool table, and ample games kept 4 boys highly entertained during a few rain storms. The river is truly right behind the house and you have access to put in kayaks and tubes, as well as fishing. We took advantage of this two days in a row. We found decent food in Abingdon and enjoyed the hike to The Channels and fishing in Big Tumbling Creek (famous for it's trout). All are within 25 mins of the house. Our only regret was not enjoying the outside seating and decks more, but we were so busy having fun we didn't sit much.
The River Garden is set in the perfect location for the outdoor enthusiast who also would love to just relax in a most picturesque setting or take in a great play and dine in a fabulous restaurant in Abingdon Virginia, a historic award winning small town. The house is set on the bank of the river but also on over 50 acres on mountainous wooded but trailed land with some breathtaking views. There is plenty to do right out your back door but also just 15 minutes away is the Virginia Creeper Trail head in Abingdon, with 34 miles of beautiful trail to mountain bike or hike, Or visit the Barter Theater with fabulous Broadway show quality theatre 11 months of the year, and great non-chain restaurants that won't break the bank. 5 miles up the road is Hidden Valley Lake, set on top of a 4000 ft mountain, it is a scenic wildlife management area with great hiking, fishing and hunting. Bristol, the official birthplace of Country music, on the state line with Tennessee is just 20 miles and has great antique shops and restaurants, as well as the Motor speedway to its credit. .
