About John Reeves

My wife and myself have two daughters. My oldest graduated from Samford and got her Masters from Auburn. The youngest just graduated from Auburn.

John Reeves purchased this house in 2000

Why John Reeves chose Alabama

I enjoy the three levels the house offers. Large decks front and rear so there is always breeze in your face...if you like. Three separate central air and heat units so everyone gets their 'way'. Huge hot water heater never lets you run out of hot water. Top of the line mattresses give you a great nights sleep. Fantastic flat screen TV with impeccable clarity. Top quality components throughout the home - we built it to retire in and we took it to another level. Located at the end of the cul-de-sac it offers a very peaceful existence. Great view of the water and Lighthouse. I angled the house to be a direct view. Lots to love about the place!

What makes this house unique

Great House located in a gated subdivison with pool, tennis court, playground and white sandy beaches. Saltwater pool has restrooms and showers. Boardwalk takes you to the shoreline.

Custom built home with lots of features. Even has RV hookups - sewer and power.

I own a Condo next door for 'OVERFLOW" - if needed.

Everyone has their own space and won't feel crowded.

Wonderful time at the beach. Enjoyed the view.

  • 4 of 5

This was my family's third time at Dauphin Island and, as always, we had a great time. The house has a great view off the back deck and we also made good use of the golf cart for getting to the boardwalk and bringing tired children back from the beach. We enjoyed the grill, and the beds were excellent. The property was in good condition and well maintained. Desoto Landing is a private community and the beach is never crowded.

Renters should note that the downstairs bedroom requires going outside as it is separate from the rest of the house. I missed that in the description at first, but fortunately it was no problem for us and could be a plus for some situations as it has its own mini kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen was stocked with the basics, but probably needed a few more glasses for full occupancy.

Everything worked as it should and was comfortable and attractive. We enjoyed our time there and would recommend it.

Exceeded Our Expectations

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved the house and the island! It was amazing! We definitely would like to stay there again. We had three generations (My husband and I, two boys, and my 70+ year old parents) plus another mom and son. The house was a perfect fit. There was plenty of space to not feel like it was crowded but a large enough space for all of us to be together.

Some of the things we really appreciated during our visit..

-super comfy beds

-well stocked kitchen with small appliances, pots & pans, and some pantry items.

-lots of space

-large collection of DVDs-I think we watched a movie almost every night

-nice collection of games

-beach chairs

-lots of towel

-great grill (but we also had an awesome chef :-)

-golf cart

-semi private beach plus larger public beaches on either end of the island

-nice trails for running and biking on the island

-Nice to have wi-fi and lots of channels

-hammock

-deck with comfortable furniture; great for watching for relaxing with a cup of coffee and watching for dolphins

-loved the view of the lighthouse, gulf, and shrimp boats

There is a grocery store on the island (Ship and Shore). They had a pretty good variety for being a small store on an island but the prices are obviously higher. If you have space, I would take most of your groceries with you. That being said, I think we went there every day for something.

We also went to Skinner's Seafood. It was good but pricey. We took the ferry to Fort Morgan/Gulf Shores and found some seafood markets that were less expensive.

As with any house, rental or not, there were a few things here or there but we all mentioned at one time or another that the house more than exceeded our expectations which were pretty high. We definitely plan to return! Great place!

PERFECT

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a place for your big family this is the place. Our family of 7 had a wonderful time at John's place! The day we moved in John stopped by to make sure everything was good. I told him everything was great! Our oldest son loved the downstairs "apartment". Being a college student it was nice for him to have own place. The walk to the beach is less then 2 minutes. The neighborhood is very quiet and peaceful. If you want a place to get away from the hustle and bustle this is the place. We will most certainly be coming back.

Home Has Bed Bugs!! Rotted Floors!! There's not a star below POOR or thats what I would put

  • 1 of 5

Once we got home a few weeks later we got a call from one of our guest now had bed bugs! They actually found one on the luggage. We also had a roach problem. The golf cart worked half the time and caught fire!

VERY DANGEROUS!!

Half the light bulbs worked, hot water was constantly going out, NO cups or glasses, none of the TV's worked except in the livingroom, dishes were in serious need of changing out very scratched up & Stained, no lamps in the whole house... The house appears your renting a large tent. Owner seems very cheap! Thats explains no lamps and dishes so you won't use his dishwasher electricity. Speaking of the Air Conditioning barley worked. The unit is too small for a house the as extreme vaulted ceilings. The home could not ever get cool. It's depressing to sit in the dark or under half working overhead lights. Mold and mildew smell in the basement/downstairs room. The sheets on the bed did not appear to have been changed in a while! We found hairs on our pillow case!

I was extremely disappointed in the home. Not to mention that back door was inoperable considering the floor is rotted out. The owner was very difficult to deal with, because I was unhappy with his home. He started blaming me for things and making things up. The owner wants to believe his home is a 5 star luxury and said so when its actually a dump! to get to the beach you can't walk right out the door you have to walk back down street and go public access. NOT WORTH IT!

Owner's Response: Amy, your review is a lie. You and your crew of spring breakers trashed my property. You were called out on it four months ago (when it happened) and I even posted this about your abuse: John R. 04/06/2015 Amy, rented a vacation home of mine. What a joke. If she is any indication of the company (I assume she is) then there must be two standards.... This is how she left my house.... Dauphin Island, Alabama 3/29/15 - 4/3/15 Broken commode seat. Big green egg grill with your left over nasty meat left. Ever clean up after yourself? Fish smell and fish slime left at corner of house. Nobody needs to deal with rotten fish stink. Dirty underwear left on floors. Never had a tenant do that in 15 years of vacation rentals. Cans left between beds - 3 of them. Corner broken off post - freshly done with matching wood splinter on concrete. Golf cart had been driven in sand/off road. Tons of sand under the cart and wheels were packed with sand. Abused and not charged when left. Clearly not designed for driving through sand. Storage building had been entered, my personal boat had been boarded and pilfered. Come on? The only complaint you had was that the golf cart had quit working (first day) and the next day I was there replacing the battery. If you had any complaints during your stay I would have corrected them. It is a good thing that Alabama Power has unlimited amounts of power available - you tested that as well leaving the air conditioner units working overtime trying to maintain the 64 degree temps the cleaning crew found when they arrived. Also, they found all lights left on...Alabama Power thanks you. Speaking of the cleaning crew...they spent seven hours cleaning up after you. 7 hours. But, you said you left the house as you found it. BS. You got way more that you paid for. It is very interesting that a person of your position can abuse someones property and then try to turn around the blame. It is very sad that now...that you are confronted with the damages you caused, you demand a full refund. John Reeves The above is posted on YP.com in Birmingham, AL website and was posted 3 days after your stay. I can only assume that you just "found" my posting and it caused you to post your lies on this site. None of my houses have EVER had bed bugs - that is a lie and you should be ashamed of yourself. I own five vacation rental homes on Dauphin Island. In my fifteen years of renting them I have never had a tenant treat a property the way you did.

Quiet and relaxing

  • 4 of 5

Nice house, big. Close to beach. Loved the outdoor decks, but back deck stairs need more lighting at night. Quiet. Dressers in the bedrooms to put clothes during stay would be a a BIG plus. None. Beds are comfortable. Wrought iron/glass furniture in kitchen and living room not practical with kids, and uncomfortable. Refigerator upstairs needed some attention, as well as a toaster( needs one) but told owner. Coffee maker is awesome. Downstairs separate from upstairs, cannot get upstairs without going outside. We called it an apartment. It would work well for families that wanted to be separate like in laws /older teens? Master bath on main level could use new wallpaper or repair (peeling) and a new mirror on vanity. Sliding back door on main level needs some grease. Makes a loud noise when opening. Owner had a satellite fixed while we were there and removed a tree for reception ( thanks!) Golf cart nice for older kids, and riding to clubhouse/ pool. Kitchen cabinets and drawers need a good cleaning( debris. Dried on food). I ran dishes through the dishwasher and put paper towels in the drawers after cleaning. I left a note for cleaning people to wash the placemats. It was a nice stay, just needs sprucing.. would stay again though.
